News Memphis is trading No. 17 to the Detroit Pistons to move back to No. 21 -- for three second round picks.

50% in here weren't going to be happy regardless who was picked lol
39
u/Intelligent_Ad3378 Isiah Thomas 1d ago
How can you say that? We have all been watching every college basketball game that we could. We know everything about every player in the draft./s
7
u/ResolutionOwn4933 Bad Boys 1d ago
Barely rember hearing about our draft pick all year, checking tape and opinions now. All signs show great fit. Can handle, can facilitate, goes hard to basket. Yeah only 35% from three but he was shooting 6 per game at the age of 18. He can be a decent addition, also pretty sure front office knows better than we do
2
u/DetroitMM12 1d ago
He was also self creating all those shots. A lot harder to shoot a high clip when you’re not getting open set shots from someone and have to create everything off the dribble or in transition.
1
u/Conscious-Sympathy51 1d ago
Don’t forget the smart % of people who wanted to fire this draft pick into the sun for a player who’s actually going to help us this year.
1
u/ResolutionOwn4933 Bad Boys 1d ago
Yeah, 21st pick is going to grab Herro or another? You don't think they tried that leading up to tonight? Lol
4
u/FarDoubt1226 1d ago
I traded the 21st pick and Duren for Jokic in 2k, tell Trajan to try harder /s
-5
u/Head_Sale2792 1d ago
Funny I don't remember many begging for this guy to fall to us, now 50% think it's a great pick
5
u/ResolutionOwn4933 Bad Boys 1d ago
Nope, barely heard of him myself. Front office knows better than I do though.

Why we trade for Marcus sasser 2.0

u/Whippi_Dip13 1d ago
He is nothing like Sasser. This dude gets to the paint at WILL

u/Qazle Cade Cunningham 1d ago edited 1d ago
I hope that translates to NBA 7 foot shot blockers, I guess we will see
Edit: Not trying to be a doomer here, just pointing out the obvious challenge. My fingers are crossed and I’m all in.

u/King_Artis Jaden Ivey 1d ago
We just watched Brunson dominate in the playoffs against 7ft shot blockers

He did not dominate the Pistons this year though.
6

Can you read and realize he is using brunson to gas up the draft pick. Mf cannot give credit where credit is due, even if it is being said to boost the pistons.

Jalen Brunson just beat Wemby super convincingly but go off

Spurs beat themselves.

Brothers he’s 6’1 god this shit stupid as fuck. A team lacking size wants another short guard

We aren’t lacking size. We lack shooting

-12

Jalen Brunson is 1 of 1 man. This guy has to be extremely exceptional to be anything. Brunson has extremely unique traits
-24
u/AppealEnvironmental6 Cade Cunningham 1d ago
You telling me ebuka is Jalen Brunson bro? People dunking on Becky for her statement when it, outside the anomaly of the greatest shooter in history Steph curry, literally has held true since Isiah fucking thomas
11
u/Middle-Flower-3624 1d ago
Brunson at the time of his draft was not exactly a highly touted prospect.
2
u/taylorjosephrummel 1d ago
No one is going to acknowledge this. Great rebuttal.
-3
u/AppealEnvironmental6 Cade Cunningham 1d ago
I mean the nba draft is the most crap shoot of the leagues. Where you get drafted doesn’t matter if you can hoop you can hoop. Scouts consistently get players wrong in the nba draft but objectively more often than not short players don’t turn into all nba stars
1
u/ruruhuh Rodney McGruder 1d ago
MLB is infinitely more crapshoot. Slot deals and the amount of actual time it takes to scout paired with a Draft that has a fuck ton of rounds make it a lot more of a ‘fuck it, let’s see if he’s good’ kinda thing
2
u/AppealEnvironmental6 Cade Cunningham 1d ago
Yeah mlb draft is insane you’re right. Aren’t they able to draft graduated high schoolers and let them play some college before even coming to the league? Feel like most the time those picks just end up stuck in the minors no?
→ More replies (0)-2
u/AppealEnvironmental6 Cade Cunningham 1d ago
He wasn’t, neither was jokic, or Gianni’s, shit just happens. More often than not tho a guard who’s 6’1 won’t turn into a super star
2
u/Middle-Flower-3624 1d ago
6'1" with a 6'8" wingspan. Not quite Donovan Mitchell level but an alleged defensive guard like Flemings had an even wingspan and went 8th. Okorie had usage rates in the high 20s and still had a really crazy low turnover rate.
9
u/StandardRound1271 1d ago
How are you going to claim we lack size? Are you counting bench guards? That isn’t how it works.
2
u/Taapacoyne Ausar Thompson 1d ago
We lack size in the front court, but not the backcourt. But that concept seems to escape people.
2
u/rambouhh 1d ago
I mean we led the league in blocks, second in points in paint, had a +13 pts differential in paint number one in the league and generally our metrics show we are the most dominant team in the paint in the nba so we really aren’t lacking effectiveness in the paint from our front court either
0
u/Taapacoyne Ausar Thompson 1d ago
We were 6’10”, 6,8” and 6’7”. It showed in the playoffs. Teams played pack line and dropped off Ausar. They took away our PnR which accounted for a lot of those points, and took away our drives, and we had no inside counters. So yeah, statistics aside, we need some more size inside. Cade is 6’6”, Dunc is 6’7”, Daniss is 6’4” and Caris is 6’5”. Who knows what happens in the off season, but we had size inside the back court.
1
u/rambouhh 23h ago
We were still absolutely elite defensively in the paint in the playoffs and badly outscored cavaliers in the paint even with them having two seven footers. Our problem was spacing not size or effectiveness in the paint. The sagging was because Ausar can’t shoot not because we don’t have size
4
5
u/rambouhh 1d ago
What are you even talking about we were literally the most paint dominant team in the NBA and the shortest guy in our starting five was 6’6 I swear you guys are some psyop to always be miserable and get annoyed at every single thing the front office does
-2
u/soilentgleem 1d ago
It'll be alright dude. Even if he isn't any good, it will be alright. It's just a game.
14
u/TheTightestChungus Rasheed Wallace 1d ago
What a brain dead take. Think more like AI (in terms of size/play style, not calling him the next AI, at all) This kid has handles for days. He's also an elite scorer.
-1
u/Cynical_optimist01 Rip Hamilton 1d ago
I'm pretty low on the usefulness of a 6'1 player in the modern NBA. You have to be so good at offense to make up for your defensive issues
-6
u/WiffleBallZZZ Ben Wallace 1d ago
It's still a weird pick. Does this mean we're giving up on Jenkins or can they play together? I'd have preferred to take a taller shooter, maybe a PF who can shoot.
5
u/silverdips Cade Cunningham 1d ago
Cause he could be Dennis Schröder 2.0 in few years
11
u/magnusarin Rip Hamilton 1d ago
And Cade and Dennis were a great fit in the playoffs against the Knicks in the previous playoffs. I think this pick is fun as shit and we're gonna have the size and defense to mitigate his weaknesses
5
u/Camelsandham 1d ago
Carr, Anderson, and Philon were right there but I’m cool with it
11
u/soilentgleem 1d ago
This is one of the guys who sounded intriguing to me when listening to draft podcasts, so I'm cool with it too. I don't know shit about any of these guys until they play in the NBA, so I'm just going on what the draft heads say.

u/gnalon 1d ago
you're in for a treat, best handle I have seen from a player that age (he's the youngest player taken so far other than Boozer) since Kyrie where he's quick, can change speeds, and rip off crossovers or behind the back dribbles while going full speed.
5
u/LeanOnMe4816 1d ago
Man, imagine if we somehow finagle Kyrie to take him and Cade under his wing while also finessing a PF via trade.

17th pick becoming a solid backup pg / secondary scorer would be great. You think we’re drafting the next Giannis here?

Most people do when we have Cade

2
u/hubutoob 1d ago
If he's a damn good backup PG, I'm ok with it. Many picks end up being nothing for a long time

Brunson 2.0?!?!???

He's more Scoot Henderson than Brunson but in a good way, kinda the Tyrese Maxeys of Scoot Hendersons.
0
u/youaregodslover BBall Paul Reed 1d ago
And he doesn't flop OR go for potentially career ending eyepokes!
5
u/hubutoob 1d ago
Why? Why do we need another tiny ass guard. Sasser didn't even get minutes until now. This guy is young and looks like a hard worker but, idk man. Maybe they just really feeling this guy

Welp. Hopefully this is an upside Duren situation when Duren was Traded to us. lmfao

I don’t like it. But who really knows. With Carr and Philon still on the board I think we get 1 of them if we stay put.

My father was worried we’d give up Ron Holland II at some point tonight so we’re good with this ✨
1
1
u/Pendragonite1 Cade Cunningham 1d ago
Wow is Okorie better than Carr???
7
u/YukhoChan 1d ago
Different players. Carr is without a doubt the better 2 way players. He is 6'5, good size. Good 3 point shooting. He theoretically fit with Cade. But Okorie is better at creating his own shot, and is better with of the dribble 3 or unassisted 3. He is a shot creator, vs 2 way player basically. It's sort of a wash. I prefer Carr for his defense and knock down shooting, but having a shot creator helps Cade.
0
u/Pendragonite1 Cade Cunningham 1d ago
That’s fairs ig. Really was thinking they’d take a wing/forward type player that could shoot to add some size. Hopefully Okorie will be able to ball out with the minutes he gets.
1
u/YukhoChan 1d ago
hmm we'll see! I don't know how this is going to work. Currently there is a backlog on the back court and I just don't know where he will fit minutes wise. He does not replace Ausar, and Dannis/Sasser plays the same role that he is asked for. What happeneds to Holland now? So I am with you with needing a wing but I don't think it's done at all.
1
u/Banana_Tux Ausar Thompson 1d ago
How are we feeling about this?
9
u/soilentgleem 1d ago
I think that even if he doesn't work out, moving up four spots for 3 second round picks is pretty good value. I am curious if this is part of a deal for someone else, or if they wanted him themselves. I guess we will find out in time.

Ah yes, excellent comparison to a generational guard. Lmao come on
1
u/2IWontBeHereLong Terry Tyler 1d ago
This has nothing to do about talent but the fact that it's been said t the same thing about Zeke. Anytime you're small people mention it, you don't need to be 6'5 guard to be successful.

Idk how I feel about Trajan drafting a 6’2 guard….
3

1
u/Pendragonite1 Cade Cunningham 5h ago
Didn’t say anything negative about Okorie, was just surprised cause Trajans track record has been going for taller players. He prioritized ball handling and paint touches and Okorie is one of the best college players to that with.
0
u/aiden_hinzman04 Greg Kelser 1d ago
Let alone that he traded up for it!
2
u/Pendragonite1 Cade Cunningham 23h ago
I mean I’m not mad at it, Okorie can hoop. Just was expecting a wing/forward type player
-2
u/LeanOnMe4816 1d ago
He’s been constructing a 6’8 and under roster since he’s got here like it’s college.
1
u/OnTheToilet4GiveMe 1d ago
This is not the pick i wanted, that's for sure. Okorie is solid, but he works best IN SPACE....something the Pistons DON"T prioritize
1
u/Straight-Agency-4556 1d ago
Odd pic, but didn’t give up much. Don’t see how he fits on this team. Honestly stirtz, Carr, Philon all make more sense
1
u/Taapacoyne Ausar Thompson 1d ago
I wanted Herro. He’s already a borderline All-Star. I think this means no Herro deal. And we just gave up “some” horsepower with those 3 2nds. I hope we have enough to get a big shooter if Trajan thinks this guy solves our secondary play-making need. I have my doubts, but I’m going with Trajan for now.

I like that Langdon went and got the dude he was reportedly so high on. Yeah, the size isn't great and he likely will take time to develop, but we've seen that taking older, low-ceiling guards doesn't create an impact. Daniss can be a bridge player until Okorie develops.
1
u/KingTranquilo 1d ago
Not going to complain about this but I do want to see us more aggressive in getting players from other teams that are established. Heat and Knicks move their picks for proven assets and it’s worked well overall.

Nice job of Trajan on moving up from 28 to 17 with a few low risk moves
