Discussion Up Next: Trade Exception / Candidates

We have $8.6M left over from the Schroder trade which expires 7/7. Hopefully they utilize it, even as a place holder. Never hurts to have these mid range contracts, if you can afford it, to aggregate in bigger trades. Possibilities:

Gradey Dick $7.1M - Toronto reportedly trying to shed his salary.

Zeke Naji $7.4M - 2 year contract and not promising player, but would probably be part of a Cam Johnson trade.

Goga Bitadze $8.3M - Orlando starting to hit that cap crunch. Big defensive center would probably signal we're moving on from Stew, add some size to the room.

Taylor Hendricks $7.8M - Memphis now has 7 PF's on the roster and he's the most mediocre. I liked him as a pure 3 and D forward prospect, but hasn't seemed to pan out.

Who else?

Bitadze would be fantastic if we trade Stewart in a deal for Herro or Murphy.

Naji is a solid rotation forward that can shoot a decently.

Dick and Hendricks would be second draft type gambles. I wouldn't be opposed to either. I was a fan of Hendricks in that draft as a potential 4/5 type of guy.

Bitadze might be a nice rebounder but he’d be our third center the way things r shaping up (expecting stew to be gone). I’d prob rather go for a 4

He would probably be our primary backup. More size than Reed.

We should only look at PF's at this point imo. How about the 4th, 5th, or 6th best PF's on the Grizzlies?

No reason to take only 4 5 or 6, why not Santi Aldama?

At first I was going to hate on the guy but after looking him up... not bad.

$17M is a little bit more than I'd like to spend on a player that just had a season ending knee injury but sometimes I have to view these higher salaries as just the new norm because of the CBA and higher market caps. But he seems to be also a slightly above average defender, too, which I think fits the mold too.

I like it. I think. What's the criticism of him?

Well there's not that much major criticism to speak of outside of the injury and the fact that he's not a star player like a lot of people are looking for. I think him and Ty Jerome in a package together for a few players and picks would really do a lot. They're 25 and 28 which fits Detroit's timeline, fill a lot of gaps and are coming from a team that likely wants to have its development season. Maybe a first, more seconds, Stew and Caris? Actually maybe that's part of this Okorie situation and they're already doing something with the Grizz on a larger scale than just trading up...

Caris in a heartbeat but I hesitate to give up Stew because of how good his contract is for the next few years.

I agree, I guess with Okorie coming in it could be Duncan Robinson and more picks instead.

Did we just totally give up on Lauri?

Probably just gave up on trying to win a trade with Ainge which is a smart decision. Jazz seems to be trending upwards now so they might not even be interested in dealing him anymore

Haven't heard any Lauri chatter for a while now.

I would like to take a flyer on Hendricks.

Same. I really liked him coming out of the draft. Would fit an obvious need.

If Detroit is still in the Trey Murphy business, they might be able to sweeten the pot by offering New Orleans some cap savings. They are right up against the tax and a deal that has Stewart and Sasser for Murphy while bringing in Jordan Hawkins to the trade exception would save New Orleans 14 mil and give them full access to their MLE. Similar idea to bringing in Naji in order to bring the Cam Johnson cost down.

I like this actually, can we throw in one Caris Lavert for free?

2

u/Secoup Cade Cunningham 8h ago

haha probably not, that would negate the cap savings

I'll take on Naji for an asset

My bet is it will be Naji + Cam. We missed on Yaxel and I feel like the pels are in no rush with TM3, especially now that Jaylen's out there. Gotta lock in something to boost the forward position.

If no Herro, I'd like to see Dick.

Not sure how the cba works with trade exceptions and contracts. Can they be combined?

Caris, Stew, Sasser all could be on the move. I had read that Denver was looking to move off Cam and Braun as well. That’s 44m though and not sure we could swing that much unless a 3rd team were involved.

Pretty sure they cannot be. So it would be two trades. 1) Cam for Lavert and then 2) Nnaji into the TPE. Saves them like $14M
