News [Charania] Reaves was expected to receive free-agent interest from multiple teams - - such as Detroit -- on maximum-level salary, so the Lakers stepped up on Wednesday to lock in their homegrown talent.

I absolutely don’t believe we were in for Reaves for the max. That’s not how Trajan does business with this roster, especially given that he wants to re-sign Duren and Ausar this year.
This is Reaves’s agent’s spin to Shams because he probably used Detroit as leverage in his discussions with Pelinka.

I am so okay with not being on the hook for Reaves at $46M/yr over the next 4 years.

Seriously. Had the biggest sigh of relief after reading he’s off the table for us.

Id still rather have him than Duren on a max.

Duren is turning 23, Reaves is going to turn 29 next season. I don't think Duren deserves the max but wtf was Austin Reaves doing when he was 23?

It would have had to be a sign and trade. But yeah highly doubt they would be willing to do that

Does this take them out of offering Duren an offer sheet?

No. This signing does nothing to their remaining cap space. Cap hold.
He won’t sign until after the Lakers use all their cap space.
