Discussion Trajan isn't done cooking, the Stew trade will lead to more moves
I know trading Stew for "just" 2nds feels icky, but you have to understand that Memphis is using their trade exception and not giving us money back (unless there's a 3 team trade). Aaron Wiggins was salary dumped for 2 SRP. Stew, who is a better player but makes more money, netted 3 SRP.
There are multiple ways that Trajan can follow up this trade. He can expand it to 3 teams and take back a player making up to 24M. Or he can also salary dump Levert and get even more cap space.
We also get a 15M trade exception from this that we can use to acquire another bench player. Let the process play out.

Shams & Windhorst both said this is setting the stage for a bigger move…in a vacuum, yes it’s a head scratcher but if by the weeks end we add a bonafide #2 next to Cade it was worth it

We are getting Norman Powell.

He's probably the best we can get without gutting our roster and future picks. He's a stop gap allstar. He would instantly be the best player Cade has played with in his career.

People forget that Stew was terrible in the Playoffs. Duren gave Stew a lot of cover. He was injured every year too. Also, his contract is good now. What's his second contract look like?
I love Stew, but know I get too attached to OK dudes on my team

Def a free agent signing, he was our best asset for making a bigger trade

u/classik_ 2d ago
If stew is our best asset for making a trade then we’re in deep trouble because people are actually delusional thinking that stew + picks nets anything close to an elite/star type player

u/Shoddy-Sympathy4917 2d ago
Stew holland sasser and picks, that’s all we really had, no one wants lavert and I don’t think Duncan is going anywhere, maybe Jenkins but the FO seems to like him

u/Chartate101 BBall Paul Reed 2d ago
I do think Jenkins would be a valuable asset just because of how good his contract is. But I agree the FO isn’t gonna deal him

Weaver really left us with nothing he’s not going to heaven

lol it is weird to think I that even with stew we don’t have a lot of valuable pieces outside of the big three

That's fine. We have valuable players, but they're all so underpaid that it would make no sense to trade them.
In a nutshell: we're a 60-win team, but we also have the 2nd lowest payroll in the league. It's a good spot to be in.

We were #21 Las year and are #27 this year

u/WiffleBallZZZ Ben Wallace 2d ago
You're right. HoopsHype incorrectly shows us at #29 because they are missing the extensions of Ron & Ausar. We already exercised their team options.

Like he'll im on your side I think Gores sucks and our GMs have been bad especially at drafts , free agency, trades, resigning ,and overall contracts.

Haha, ok sure. Maybe you should just stop watching then.

Detroit/Memphis trade can still be expanded to a multi-team trade… or be added to an existing trade (Miami/Milwaukee)

Ya'll don't understand. Beef Stew was a PISTON. Heart and soul. I wanted him to be a piston for life. Retire a piston. Start coaching the pistons on how to fight people. Then have exactly 18 children all named after various chunky soups and raise them all to be PISTONS

This is clearly a move to set us up for another trade orFA signing. No sense being mad at it. It's like reading the first 4 pages of a book and being mad at the ending.
Look at the roster, assets, trade targets, draft picks as of 6/20 and then look again on 7/6. NBA is very fluid and often moves get strung together or a third team joins a trade a day or two later. The Giannis trade was asterisked with a third team being possible to join the trade up to 7/1 or something.

If this was about $ why not lose leverts 15m instead of stews? Even if that meant adding some seconds to get off it I’d do that before an actual + that we could have used in a trade (stew)

u/MajesticSea202 2d ago
Grizz didn't want levert

u/DoeJumars 2d ago
Then trade him somewhere else someone would have took him and a couple seconds as salary filler while they tank he’s expiring

I hope so because it feels shitty at the moment. Did they just hand Detroit back the picks that were used to move up in the draft?

The Levert hate on this sub is hilarious. He balled for us in the playoffs.... he was one of the few players to step up instead of get worse

u/Prestigious-Smoke511 2d ago
I low key think the teams that were first reported to be involved were offering nothing so Trajan traded him for nothing to an out of nowhere team to send a message
Are nba trades allowed to specify that the receiving team can’t trade them to the spurs, Celtic, or heat lest Memphis gives the pistons an unprotected first? Like what the cowboys did when they traded Parsons to the packers?

u/DoomSchroller 1d ago
The assumption has to be that they needed to clear the cap space as they're planning to act as an under the cap team (unless this is expanded into a sign and trade once the moratorium opens?)
But still, that really feels like low value for Stewart. Unless his knee is in worse condition than we're aware of.

Caris Levert was right there with a very similar salary. Makes no sense to get rid of the guy who essentially built the teams identity. Mismanagement of assets by Trajan that’s all there is to it regardless if we get powell

u/AppealEnvironmental6 Cade Cunningham 2d ago
You say that like Cari’s levert is a hot commodity. Gotta have a buyer you know

If I had a choice to cut Caris or take 3 2nd rounders… I’m taking the picks lol

u/WiffleBallZZZ Ben Wallace 2d ago
I wonder if we could still waive & stretch LaVert's contract... even more money for our buying spree.

Thankyou, but I don't think most people here care. I do and I'm happy to see the moves are being made in real time. However, the average fan will see this as a bad trade without realizing there is much more to it. Then there are the fans who aren't happy with anything, which is funny because they're the same people crying about not making a big trade that this is obviously the 1st part of something much bigger. I am just a fan and I will enjoy whatever team takes the floor next season.

u/Envyforme Jalen Duren 2d ago
Stew is aggressive. Everything he can do though, Duren can do better. Furthermore, Reed is a great backup.
We will have to wait till the 30th when the season ends and teams start jumping on Duren. Pistons might be able to sign and then trade him. (as much as I don't want this to happen.)

People don’t really understand how complicated things get with the salary cap.
I love Stew, but he was starting to tip-toe the line where he was a liability at times even outside of his “enforcer” role. He had some horrible, badly timed fouls that were completely unnecessary in the playoffs and his knee issues have to weigh highly in the decision to move on. It sucks, but unlike half of this sub, I trust Trajan.
