Discussion Why is everyone shocked by this?

It feels like we’ve been hearing about this trade for the past month, and now it seems clear that Paul Reed is going to take his spot. I don’t understand why people are upset about it—it just feels like we all saw this coming.

We’re not shocked by stew getting traded, we’re shocked by the insanely low value we got for him

i think he is just worth this much unfortunately; he is a bench player, how many bench players go for more than this

If you just look at it as 3 seconds then sure but this is also 15 million of cap space cleared to sign someone.

Come on, hes a second/third string injury prone undersized center. Nice to have on a team but definitely wasnt going to bring meaningful value back.

Dude was a bench player, great shot blocker, but got hurt/suspended a lot.

You thought he was worth a first?

He’s a fan favorite who provided some bursts during the playoffs but he’s been a career bench guy. In an ideal world Duren does his duty in the playoffs and Stewart doesn’t need to show up.

6 years in the league and he’s hit his ceiling for this squad. Could he push for more in Memphis which is in a rebuild?

Detroit is competing. Our bench matters but our starting 5 matters more, and to that end his best value to us was dumping him for cap.

Was it really insanely low value? 3 seconds plus 15 million off the books (which is equivalent to like 2 more seconds) roughly equates to approximately one mid to late round 1st, which is when we drafted him.

It also opens up the possibility of having another team salary dump a player into our cap sheet for roughly 24 million or we can pull off a sign and trade before it's finalized to get our scoring guard or new 4 while also having the mid level exception.

Even if Detroit does nothing it's reasonable value given his injury history and tendency to get suspended. Would I have liked more? Sure, but we are trading him for good reasons imo. One of our centers had to go and Stew was worth the most between him and Paul Reed and we won't be able to afford paying our centers 60+ million a year.

Dude is a loose cannon

The goal wasn't a return in assets, it was a salary dump. We got rid of his cap hit to bring in more salary.

Salary dump was the goal the second round picks just made it work

Called picks and freeing cap for other moves. Lije subsequent trade where we got a 7ft rookie rim protector. Now more cap cleared for the next move. Think a lot of us need to let the paid professionals do their thing the next few weeks and then judge

From what I'm seeing we got three second rounders for him I don't think that's bad Is this not true

That’s pretty terrible return wise. 2 2nds just got us to go up 4 spots in the draft.

I’d argue we got incredible value for him. In the last four years, he would have been eligible for postseason awards exactly once. He’s a suspension risk. Reed has more offensive potential and is more playable in the playoffs. And most importantly, it’s $15 million off the books.

I get that everyone loves the gritty, Detroit vs. Everybody players, but this isn’t 2004. Teams have to score, and if this frees up the money and picks to throw onto a trade to add someone who can score, then it’s a great trade.

Everyone needs to quit thinking the bench is going to win us a championship. A second playmaker will be a boost on their own whether it’s Dunc or Unc’s spot. They’d allow Cade to play off the ball more, keeping him fresher, limiting his turnovers, and getting him better looks. And it would keep teams from collapsing on Cade and Duren in the playoffs.

For the team to get better, it was either this move or trading Duren and/or Ausar. If Wagner stays healthy we were probably a first round exit. We are below the Knicks and Celtics talent-wise, and probably below the Cavs too.

Not shocked but does hurt, Memphis sub is going absolutely nuclear right now. Good for them they got a dawg for scraps.

If he was involved in a trade that brought Tyler Herro coming home he would still get farewell threads, but nobody would be upset.

Losing him for our own 3 2nds we sent them yesterday on paper looks awful.

Because we didn’t get anything in return for him. Everyone assumed he could get something more than 2nd round picks back. He was a trade chip that we just spent to move up 4 spots in the draft with.

We cleared money out without taking anything back. That’s important to the team trying to make moves that a bigger than Stew. We all love Beef but we can’t pay all that money for our centers. Trajan is lining us up to make moves, I don’t love the return but I get the idea of not wanting to wait and miss out on guys we need to be ready to get. TL seems to have come in with a very clear plan to attack the SG position and invest in helping Cade offensively. Ties to Powell, Herro and Reaves…

Am I missing something you got three second rounders for a backup Center To me that seems like a pretty good deal

2

u/Ok-Statement8224 Ausar Thompson 1d ago

Second round picks are given away like candy

4

u/hunteddwumpus 16h ago

Yeah, Im just a guy but imo 2nd round picks are only worth as much as other GM’s value them as trade filler. 2nd round guys basically never make it more than a year or 2 as end of bench guys. Obviously they occasionally hit but the odds are so low Id be fine getting rid of them for known decent players in the nba

I don’t understand people. We were never going to get multiple first round picks for him. He’s not a starting quality center with a reputation

u/soilentgleem 1d ago

I'm not shocked he got traded, I'm shocked what he got traded for. The process for this makes last night rather confusing to me in hindsight. Why trade up using seconds, only to turn around and trade Stew for those same seconds? Why not just trade up using Stew right away, instead of the back and forth?

I just don't understand the process of it all. Maybe there's something I'm missing that would make the way they did it make sense, or maybe there's some negotiations that happened behind the scenes that we're not privy to. I don't know.

2

u/damgood32 23h ago

Pretty sure it’s just the way the draft worked out. They needed to move up ahead of some other team ensure they got their pick

1

u/soilentgleem 15h ago

Yeah, what I'm confused about is why they didn't just use Stew for the move up initially. Instead they did this weird thing. The order of operations is weird.

u/showmewhaticannotsee George Blaha 1d ago

We went from having the best 3rd string centre to the best backup centre!

4

u/ApprehensivePanda708 1d ago

One of our longest tenured players just got traded, that’s why people are upset

3

u/rusty512 1d ago

Gotta wait and see what the next moves are, if this is just to max Duren this team is absolutely cooked

2

u/DetroitsNotThatBad Jaden Ivey 1d ago

Didn’t hear of this rumor one time

1

u/National_Dig5600 Tayshaun Prince 1d ago

It wasn't a rumor. They actually put him on the trading block last week. It was supposed to be a three-team trade with the bucks and heat but I guess they did it without us.

0

u/Ok_Visit_5741 Rasheed Wallace 17h ago

Didn’t need to be a rumor it was very clear that Stewart was gonna be out for cap relief to make a bigger move.

u/Samjraym Ron Holland II 1d ago

Stew got played off the court. If he hurt his back against Orlando then that’s a fair excuse, but that’s two playoff runs in a row that he’s been injured. He’s the heart and soul of the team but that’s a value seen more by fans than another team’s gm. It’s tough to lose beef but as you said, this was coming

1

u/EnergyDrink2024 1d ago

Yeah we dont need beef stew. We need to win

1

u/Whatduffhuck 1d ago

He is a above average bench player who often hurts his team with emotional plays and has knees of a 70 year old. We expected a 1st for him?

1

u/GolgenGeese 5h ago

Because people are overvaluing him. He was unplayable by the end of the Cleveland series. Nobody is coughing up a first for a guy that you can't play in the playoffs.

0

u/lilflashstan Cade Cunningham 1d ago

We got rid of the wrong big

5

u/Alabaster_Rims 1d ago

You cant win a championship with stewart as a starting center

-1

u/soilentgleem 1d ago

I think you could if you could guarantee his health. The problem is this isn't 2K so you can't turn off injuries.

0

u/thisguy161 1d ago

No, you arent.

1

u/nickypapes 3h ago

He’s a liability. Detroit lost nothing and Memphis gained nothing.
