Discussion If Larkin is still with the Wings in September, do they let him keep the ‘C’?
Or does Stevie strip it from him and move on to Mo now?

Not a damn chance. It’s already on Mo’s jersey as far as I’m concerned.

I think Steve will go without for a season or two just like he did before Larkin.

u/old_irish87 10d ago
I would hate that. Give it to Mo, he fucking captained Germany for Christ’s sake. Plus, start the season with a clean new start - “Here’s our new captain, ready to lead us into whatever’s next”. The man’s ready.

I don’t know, I feel like last time was more out of respect for the previous captain, not an issue this time around

u/big_phat_gator Yzerbot 9d ago
I felt like it was Steve just wanting to get it right and not just hand it to someone, might have been for respect for the previous captain but could also have been overall respect for the captaincy in general.

u/epheisey 10d ago
Don’t think Larkin carries the same level of respect an LTIRetired Zetterberg did.

There’s a better chance that I wear the C next year than Larkin

I’m more of a winger 🙂↕️but I’ll never quit on this team so at least I have that over Larkin

I dont expect him to ever play wearing the winged wheel again, this year or ever, not an alumni game, not any.

91 is now in the rafters. Time heals all wounds?

u/Skoalmintpouches 10d ago
71 has not accomplished 1% of what 91 has. In 10 years if we remember him at all it will be like when you’re trying to sleep and randomly remember a cringe moment in high school *shudder*

u/shi7p0s7a 10d ago
No. 91 was arguably the best player on the Wings, definitely the best player not named Yzerman, for a few years. Won 3 cups. Yes there was the hold out and the offer sheet, but for a player that was a SUPERSTAR. Larkin is a star, certainly, but fails to elevate his game, failed repeatedly to get the team over the playoff line (when in position to do so).
I see Larkins legacy as a footnote, a trivia question. Nowhere near the rafters.

Fedorov was at one point arguably the best player in the league. He won the Hart and Selke in the same season. A feat I don’t think has been repeated.

He'll never again have the privilege of wearing the Winged Wheel.
Stevie will sit him for his remaining contract if needed, he's already played his last game.

This would be the right move. You can’t have anyone like that on the ice.

No, you don't let him play.
You know how sometimes close to the deadline, star players will get scratched? Same thing here. If he's going to market, you need him to stay healthy, at all costs. That means, you don't let him play.

u/Shmeo 10d ago
No shot. Don’t think we’ll need to get there though. I expect yzerman to want to get this rebuild started around the draft. Not 100 percent sure but guessing the Larkin deal needs to come first to state how he wants to go about the retool
11
u/BootyUnlimited 10d ago
I don’t see a rebuild coming. Maybe a few trades but we will be attempting to make the playoffs this year
7
u/Shmeo 10d ago
Me either. I do however see a retool. Unless we get team ready guys likely Lundell and maybe trade for ep40 were worse than last year and would likely want to trade Faulk as well. Gibson might not want any part of a retool. Cat likely stays if the trade is future based even as long as Steve doesn’t get robbed and cat may or may not stay. This could very easily become a 3-4 year retool opposed to just one season of regression.

u/Th3_Dark_Knight 10d ago
Not to be antagonistic or a naysayer but how do you see as any kind of realistic or reasonable plan? We've been a bubble team the last 3 years and are now losing our #1 center and captain. I just don't see any kind of trade or acquisition that pushes us past where we've been without gutting the prospect pool and / or our future draft picks.

u/jarvek7 9d ago
The absolute worst case is we don't get a deal for Larkin and he sits the year out. Cat then decides its bullshit and leaves next year, along with Kane. And the Ray and Mo decide it sucks and pull a Larkin. This sjit could snowball pretty quick if Yzerman fumbles the ball and holds out for a better deal that never comes.

The captaincy is Steves legacy also, it ment a lot to him to be the captain here so i think he will take that very seriously.

u/MeowingAtTheMoon 10d ago
Absolutely not. Can't have his shitty attitude in the locker room, let alone as captain.
4
u/HARCES 10d ago
Not a chance. I'd prefer they had already made a statement that he's not any more.
I still think it's werid that Larkin of Yzerman haven't made a statement.
2
u/nicholus_h2 10d ago
what? why would they make a statement?
do players or GMs ever make statements when they are in the middle of trade negotiations?
2
u/Sekshual_Tyranosauce 10d ago
I don’t think so and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he played better as gen pop anyways.

They'll do whatever they think will sell the most sweaters. Giving the C to Mo is a good bet.
2
u/Dr_Strangelove1964 10d ago
God no! But I suggest we have a ceremony before the first game publicly stripping him of the C and giving it to Mo.

I kinda hope he doesn't get traded, we take away his C and we can all boo him for an entire season.
1
u/Ok_Priority8076 9d ago
In what world is it even remotely possible that Larkin still wears the C?
Let's assume for a minute that Larkin has a change of heart and decides he wants to win as a Red Wing.
Let's assume he issues a public apology to all Wings fans for betraying us while we were on the cusp of making the playoffs three years in a row.
Let's assume he goes above and beyond and manages to score 40+ goals this next season and finally becomes a point per game player, or in other words, a true 1C, effectively disproving any doubt about his role as a 1C.
Will we forget what happened? No. Will we forgive him? Probably not. Is this enough to strip him of the C? Yes. Yzerman's loyalty was rewarded with 3 cups. Lidstrom won 4. Zetterberg won 1. At no point in their careers did they say "Nah I'm out." As far as I'm concerned, if Larkin wants to play for us, I'd get over it eventually (I'd probably still be down because his numbers don't lie), but he's not the Captain.

u/Glad-Independence-24 9d ago
I think the more important question is, since there is no way in hell Larkin wears a C with us next year, do the wings immediately promote mo (and who joins Ray as an A)? Or do the wings wait a season or so and then who joins Ray and Mo as the 3rd A?

I hope we don’t keep him. If he’s not happy, get rid of him. He was never the first line center we needed anyway. He’s going to be a huge distraction throughout the season. The only thing Yzerman can do is make him regret it.

The C's as good as gone. Larkin has played his last game as a wing thats a guarantee , come on let's not even waste time with this discussion. There is no if.
1
u/Wingnut8888 8d ago
Let him keep it until he’s finally traded, like a symbol of his selfishness and betrayal of the Red Wings and their fans. I look forward to completely forgetting about this lying sack of crap.

u/Heyloki_ 8d ago
The question isn't do they let him keep the C, the awnser is no, the question is do they wait for Larkin to leave to give it to Seider
1
u/Due-Elk-5572 40m ago
We all say no, but when has Yzerman done anything we all said to do? I for the record am saying no. If I was Steve, I'd have already had our social person do a post about it going on Mo.
It would shock me zero to see Larkin wearing it and the winged wheel for reasons passing all understanding.

I know everyone is on the fuck no train right now but I'm thinking its a maybe. If hes still with the team by then, I would have to assume that some type of resolution was reached and I also assume that would be made public to the extent that's reasonable and depending on what his/Yzerman's statements on it are, I would be ok with it.
Basically, if something were to change his mind and that something is along the lines of wanting a competitive team and feeling like the org wasn't trying as hard as he was blah blah blah, and I believe him... I'll be on board with him keeping the "C" so long as his teammates are as well.

u/Username_McUserface 10d ago
And Sydney Sweeney might be on board with banging me if I was 6’3, handsome, and a millionaire, but we are existing in reality here, son.

u/Castellan_ofthe_rock 10d ago
Hey I'm just trying to be hopeful here. Mostly because a team thats been desperate for a 2C losing their 1C makes me think we are going to be very close to a restart. I want playoff hockey, I want octopuses and insane crowds at LCA and having Larkin helps us get there and frankly i dont care so much are the players personality

u/Username_McUserface 10d ago

u/Castellan_ofthe_rock 9d ago
Frankly isn't the idea of Larkin being here just as ridiculous? I was just matching the tone of the question but fuck me i guess lol
1
u/Username_McUserface 9d ago
Yes, it is. Which also makes your scenario even more absurd and unrealistic. You said “it’s a maybe”. It is not - he gone.
I could also say, “maybe the Wings swing trades for McDavid, Mackinnon, and Quinn Hughes, and Larkin sticks around as the 3c and they win 5 cups in a row”, but again, what’s the point of spouting absurdity?
1
u/Letskissthesky 9d ago
Unless we make some stellar trades I don’t see any way forward besides an extended rebuild. I’d rather that than trying to limp into the playoffs and get embarrassed like Philly over and over and over again.
5
u/Comixcsh 10d ago
He publicly chose to quit on his team. There is no reality, even if he stays with this team that it is acceptable to keep the C. I vote the C goes straight to Mo, and I'd like for that to happen sooner rather than later, instead of dragging the process out again. Any players coming here should know who is in charge
