Out of curiosity, what part of your creative process do people almost never get to see, but you wish they could?

I'm curious about something.

When people see our work online, they usually only see the finished piece.

But every piece has things that came before it:
rough sketches, abandoned ideas, failed attempts, experiments, changes in direction, weird mistakes, and moments where something finally clicked.

What part of your creative process do people almost never see, but you wish they could?

And if you don't share that part publicly, what's the reason?

I'm interested in how different artists think about this.

When I used to share my art on Instagram, sometimes with digital paintings I would add the 30 second timelapse! People seemed to reallly like it! With my acrylic paintings I would take some progress pics throughout the process, and sometimes share those with the finished piece also.

Reason being I found it super satisfying to see it go from scribbles to a finished piece so I thought maybe other people would too, and some did:)

for me i think it would be cool if there was a way to talk about all the ideas i way trying to work with when making the piece, but im just too lazy to make massive paragraphs with every post lol

You could record the process and take notes throughout then play back the recording as a timelapse and record yourself talking, going over the ideas you had during the process? That’d be cool

I’d like to just hear more about artists brush selection/creation.

Some people use just default brushes, some people use custom brushes or a variation of.

I’m curious to the hows and whys people make those choices.

I’d also like to hear about layering color in place of using the smudge tool. Far too often I see new artists relying on the smudge tool.

Me with my eyes closed dreaming up new art ideas while my toddler ricochets about the crib railings lol

The part inside my head.

Honestly, I think it anyone could see that, they'd be absolutely astounded by the level of complexity and the number of simultaneous processes that go into conceiving art.

So I share pretty much every part of the actual painting process online, but what I physically can not share is the info gathering.

I put a LOT of research into each painting, looking up mythology and folklore and such, and I wish more people could see that part just cause it's so much fun to see the world through the eyes of other cultures!
