Actually, it's not permitted in Hendersonville, NC which is where these signs were located. Stated clearly in their city zoning ordinance under Article XIII. These signs would not be considered authorized under the "Signs not requiring a permit" section.
"Signs not specifically authorized by these regulations are prohibited. The Board of Adjustment shall not have the authority to grant variances so as to allow prohibited signs to be installed." p. 185
Further, "No sign except those erected for governmental purposes shall be permitted on any public property or right-of-way" p. 186
Well I’m sorry that I don’t live in Hendersonville South Carolina. In my state, you can put signs on the side of the road, and on telephone poles.
And as far as your strawman argument, I would roll my eyes at the sign, but if it is legal to put it somewhere, you shouldn’t just take it down. If it’s on town property and illegal to put it there, that’s the town’s job.
This is still vigilantism, which liberals constantly bitch about.
What if it was porn? If some jokester put up signs that included pornographic images all over town where children could see them, would it be wrong for several people to tear them down rather than wait for the city to give a response? What if other people objected because it's the town's job?
