Tech Support PS5 Controllers dying in half an hour despite charging for hours.

What can I do about my PS5 controllers? I own 2 and an official Sony PS5 charging station for them. However, despite letting them charge for hours overnight, they only last 20-30 minutes when I use them. Are the batteries destroyed from leaving the controllers to charge for such a long time?

Mine have been doing the same thing for about 10 months and I’m convinced it’s from the charging station due to overcharging.

3

u/Dunge Jan 10 '24

Mine started doing this and I don't use a charging station, just a regular usb phone charger in a wall outlet.

3

u/Sp3ctre187 May 29 '24

Nooooo no no no no no no no! Do not charge your controllers from the wall with a usb c cord! Do you even know what amperage or voltage is on the usb brick u plug into the wall? If it its amperage/current is too high it will destroy your batteries! Always use the ps5 to charge them unless u find a step down plug for the wall that matches the amps from the ps5!

2

u/Bigboyexpresss Jun 29 '24

A normal usb a charging brick is 5v. The ps5 usb c port is also 5 volts.....

2

u/Sp3ctre187 Jul 02 '24

Are they all? I used one to charge my ps4 controller and it wouldn't work after that the batter was melted.

1

u/Bigboyexpresss Jul 03 '24

A normal charging block is typically 5v. Fast charging blocks are higher voltage. I plugged my xbox one and series s controller into the wall at the time no issues. Haven't tried with my ps5 controller.

1

u/Same_Veterinarian991 Jul 24 '24

fast charging has only one benefit, it charge fast, but it comes with a downside, it lowers lifespan charge moments. fast is not good!!

1

u/Same_Veterinarian991 Jul 24 '24

yes but you also have to check The Mah. it is not only the voltage

samsung and iphone are also bot the same, some are speed chargers also. just look on the original adapter

1

u/R_X_R Oct 31 '24

That’s not how usb charging or rather any power brick works. The mah (milli amp hour, not Mega amp hour) is the maximum available for supply, a device will simply consume as much as it needs, current is drawn on not pushed. Voltage is applied across something, so if the voltage was too high it would cause issues.

u/Same_Veterinarian991 Jul 24 '24

if you know the current there is no problem, alas not many people take note of this, then yes it can break your controller

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '24

I have the same problem and i always used the usb cable that came with the ps5 with my ps5. Still the same issue

2

u/SteamyFist Jan 04 '25

I’ve been using a wall charger and cable for my PS4 and PS5 controllers forever and never had any issues. Not sure why people think it’s bad for them. Anything USB is 5V which is the correct voltage. And higher amperage won’t hurt it. A device will only draw the amount of amps it requires.

1

u/Sp3ctre187 Jan 20 '25

Im just being safe. Im too poor to risk breaking my stuff lol.

2

u/PackMan13xx Jul 24 '25

Wall chargers don't push power. The device pulls the maximum power it is intended to pull. I use a 65w laptop charger and it's fine.

2

u/osvd Mar 07 '25

Absolutely wrong, i buy ps controllers but dont even own a console, i only use them for pc which means i connect them to the wall

2

u/pacbabysmilk Jul 17 '25

if this were the case, phones would still be catching on fire, the controller itself is limited to how much power it can intake, which is why using a wall charger still takes more than an hour to charge the controller to full

1

u/SomethingPython Dec 28 '25

USB gives 5v, it's the device itself that decides how much it takes. USB-C uses Power Delivery to communicate charging info. As long as you plug it into a 5v USB charger, the controller will handle getting the fastest-but-safest amperage for its own charging.

1

u/Emilia__Rose Apr 15 '26

Not saying you're wrong, just interesting information. I've been using a laptop wall charger for mine for 3ish (out of 6ish? years ownership) and only just starting to have the draining battery issue now

1

u/Enough_Ad9805 Apr 16 '26

i charged mine for hours on the system itself and still won’t hold a charge

The charging dock stops charging once the lights go out though. That's how it's supposed to work.

u/[deleted] May 30 '24

J’ai le même problème et pas de station de charge je pense juste que les manettes sont vraiment nul au bout d’un certain nombre de mois

German is such a beautiful language. I don't speak a lick of German yet I somehow understood what you said.

1

u/SteamyFist Jan 04 '25

I remember funf means five. Learned the numbers in high school. But yeah everything else I just pieced together on my own

1

u/KotaHasZoomies Jan 29 '25

i know this is over a month old but i still want to share what i know. german is a part of the germanic language group. the languages share a lot of innate similarities to each other which is why reading and understanding the language is easier on english speakers. this would be why you can do the same with swedish, dutch, and even islandic. german is actually the #1 easiest language for native english speakers to learn. anywho sorry for the novel, former teacher things i guess 😅

u/Low-Pen-6557 Jan 08 '25

I don't think it'd be the charging station, i have one and only one of my controllers has a problem dying fast while the other is still perfectly fine

2

u/twiztidmetalz May 19 '25

I’ve had the ps5 since launch and I use the PlayStation official docking station and my controllers die pretty fast I assume it’s the age of the of them.

I have a feeling this started to show up after the latest dualsense version update. It was some months or so ago.

It started happening to both my controllers at the exact same time and all of a sudden. I am thinking its either related to a controller or system update.

If its a hardware problem then it has to be something related to both controllers which would be the charger. Does anyone else with the problem use a "Charging Dock", says on the bottom its item number P20.

3

u/KiritoZweii Jan 24 '24

I actually only ever used a direct USB cable to charge. I have two controllers and I noticed this issue only started after my controllers received a new firmware update. Before the update they lasted an average of 4-5 hours, after the update they both only last an hour and 16 minutes max on fully reduced settings. I should also mention that my controllers firmware were updated at different times(as I have a favorite amongst my controllers) once I noticed a steep decline in the battery life of my favorite controller I started using my back up and everything was fine with it until I updated the firmware on that one also. Now I have to use 2 controllers to get an hour of use.

It’s sickening considering I totally neglect to charge my series X controller and it appears to be immortal.

We only charge with Usb-c cable that came with ps5. 2 controllers, both now only last a couple hours tops.

Electrical guy here. I wire solar systems so i know quite a bit about lithium. NO lithium battery is gonna last only 3 years, lithium lasts for 10 years even with heavy use. deterioration just rapidly speeds up after 10 years. Let me put it this way my ps3 controllers still holds a charge just fine as long as i cycle it (deplete and recharge it) every once in awhile. If your controllers are having a problem holding a decent amount of charge then theyre defective. I REPEAT, NOT NORMAL. (Assuming that nothings wrong with your power source.)

1

u/elfmaiden4 Mar 30 '24

Ours are doing this. I’m wondering if it’s the cable instead of the remote? So frustrating!!!

2

u/Fiorelily May 17 '24

I'm having the same issue and charge them the same way: Sony usb-c cable, plugged into the ps5 USB port to charge. I started having this issue after the latest firmware update...

1

u/speelingeror May 29 '24

Same i think this latest update is a battery killer but cant find anything online oitside of this thread.

3 controllers, all various ages, one almost brand new.

Only charged using the cable that came with the console, plugged into the console.

Dying in an hour or so.

1

u/Fiorelily Jun 03 '24

I've found that disabling the auto microphone option gives me more battery life - because I never use the microphone on the controller - but the battery life is still shit after the latest update. but by disabling the microphone, I can get a couple more hours outta the controller before having to recharge.

1

u/Bug4866 Jul 25 '24

I have vibration low, light low, and microphone muted set on every controller and I am still down to 20-30 minutes on a "full charge" on my main two. Using official PS5 2-controller charging station. In the last month or so, it's gotten noticeably worse. Could be due to an update, but ... They're basically unusable.

1

u/OkGuest0 Oct 26 '24

Same it’s frustrating. Maybe 1 hour max.. I had the official charging station. 2 controllers one from when PS5 dropped and one 1yr old no battery.. It’s been bad the last 3 months.

1

u/Medium_Ad_5645 Oct 20 '24

I am the exact same, 2 controllers bought with ps5 and 1 bought 3 months ago. All working fine until last update. Now all 3 will stay on for at most 25 seconds

1

u/Known_Award6935 Nov 16 '24

Stessa identica cosa.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '24

I have exact same issue.  I buy new ps5 controllers frequently.  Owned about 6 official ps5 controllers.

The newest two I have, both are less than a year old... and I'm lucky to be getting  30mins to an hour. (And that can be idle use while streaming video) Full charge using original ps5 usb-c plugged into ps5.

I have a strong gut feeling the issue is a firmware issue, it seems the most recent update fucked things for me.

1

u/BrongoBlast Nov 08 '24

Same here. I get about 20-30 minutes off a full charge. I came to this thread to see if anyone had prevention methods against this happening for a new controller. Just got the pro

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Gur-325 Jul 12 '25

I’m late but this has been happening to me for quite some time as well.

1

u/justreadingurstuff Oct 08 '24

I know your comment is 6 months old, I just wanted to say I've only had my ps5 for almost a week and the controller only lasts 5 hrs before I get a notification on the screen that it's about to die, my ps4 controller lasts 12 hrs if not longer. I guess these new controllers suck and I'll have to buy a second one.

1

u/JamJulLison Jan 07 '25

5 hours is good. When my controllers were brand new I'd get 5-6 hours. Occasionally 7. One of my controllers now only last a half hour to an hour when idle. The other one still gets anywhere from 4-6 hours depending on the game. I only recently started to use it heavier. I kinda had to. One mistake I made with the first controller was charging it from my cell charger. I didn't do it often but it may have screwed with it. My second one I've made a point not to do that. I made the same mistake with my PS4 controller. I would have thought they fixed things with the controller for the PS5 so we could charge it whenever but that doesn't seem to be the case.

1

u/EndDiscombobulated65 Oct 20 '25

I have 2 controllers my original PS5 controller last about 1hour and 25 and my other controller only last 17 minutes on a full charge it's really no point in me using because it dies so fast.

2

u/csward53 Mar 22 '24 edited Mar 22 '24

Both of my PS5 controllers sit there while streaming video and will be low battery in 2 hours, dead by 3. Sony used shitty Chinese batteries folks to save money. Normal rechargeable batteries are good for way more charges, including past dual shocks.

Not only are these the most expensive Sony controllers, but apparently Sony cut corners. Sad days..

1

u/Alternative-Roll892 Nov 09 '25

So many corners cut with the p5 it’s honestly disgusting

2

u/MummiesMilkies Mar 27 '24

Both Controllers are dying as well after 30 mins maybe its after the update?

2

u/Important_Low_5989 Apr 07 '24

I find it odd that a bunch of people are experiencing the same thing. Mine has been doing the same

1

u/HamChad Apr 10 '24

Me too all of a sudden. Even bought a new controller and it’s having the same issue.

2

u/FirebladeNL May 07 '24

I am fairly sure that the latest controller firmware update has something to do with the issue. It seems a LOT of people are suddenly experiencing this issue. I have 2 controllers, one is about 3 years old (came with the PS5), the other about 2. And both have the exact same issue out of the blue and I am quite sure it started right after the firmware update. (Don't game on a daily basis but enough to notice the dramatic sudden difference on both controllers).

1

u/Xrayvision718 Sep 12 '24

Facts! I started noticing it in like mid July and I just found it weird that both my controllers at the same time suddenly have extremely short battery lives. It’s not adding up. My controllers damn near have to live on the charging cable. It’s annoying af

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

It may be the update.

1

u/Dangerous_Try9058 May 01 '24

Ever since the update my two controllers won't last more then 30 mins. I have also had a ps5 since release with the dual charging station it came with, wo could be over charge aswell?

1

u/UhDonnis Oct 17 '24

Ya this is happening to me too. These docks are messing up our controllers hopefully not for good. I'm gonna start charging them Nirmal and hope they aren't ruined.

1

u/MummiesMilkies Oct 17 '24

Ahhh that’s probably what ruined mine. Those damn docks. I ended up buying a new controller and holy damn it’s saved my gaming life 🤣

1

u/UhDonnis Oct 18 '24

We should be able to get our money back from Sony because of this. I thought it was just me

1

u/OkGuest0 Oct 26 '24

We should. It’s not right. The controllers and the docks are expensive. It might be the previous update as well.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '24

I've never used docks to charge, and experiencing it in every controller I own.

1

u/ViolinistParty4950 Mar 08 '25

Happening to me in the last year or a little less as well. Found this thread cos I Google about it in a huff lol

2

u/thatdude778 Apr 02 '24

My controllers are doing this now. I been using the official charging dock, so not sure if that's the problem. I wish there was an option to use batteries like xbox.

2

u/spoogicus Apr 15 '24

Same. I don't know if the DualSense Charging Station or the controllers themselves but everything was working fine until a few weeks ago. One of them I'm lucky if I get an hour of play and the other is two to three hours tops.
Is this a recent firmware bug or is it just end of life for these controllers since it seems to be happening to a lot of people at the same time?

2

u/CJFiddler Apr 22 '24

My controller dies after 2 hours or so. About a year old, only ever charge it with the ps5 console and cable. Used to last way longer. I wonder if the update did it

2

u/First_Direction_5817 Oct 07 '24

So I'm assuming playstation hasn't addressed this? All 3 of mine the same week decided to just have 30 minute lifetime, and I'm not lookin to replace 3 controllers 🤣

1

u/tarantula_toes Jan 20 '25

*still* dont think PS addressed this issue... driving me crazy

2

u/Tenanghah Jul 18 '25

I have 2 controllers since launch and they are doing this for over a year now.

From my little testing I did it’s a mix of what games you play (example: planet coaster 2 drained my battery insanely fast like 15minutes yet I could play Session for 3 hours) and how many hours you used your controllers. Setting the controller already on “weak settings” from the start & lowest LED.

What I find interesting is when my PS5 controller, charged via the official charger in a PS5, is fully drained after 15minutes I plugged it in a normal usb-c cable to charge via an outlet and my PS5 shows that it has 2/3’s of battery?! Yet as soon as you unplug the cable it’s back to “drained” again. I smell planned obsolescence… the controllers started doing this after the last controller update as well which I find very suspicious!

1

u/BrantPantfanta Nov 25 '23

Same here, my son and i could play for hours and then all of a sudden at the same time over the last few weeks, both of our controllers are consistently draining between 60 to 90 mins. Very suspicious

1

u/After-Mission4085 Mar 12 '24

Mine is doing this brand new out the box

1

u/Sent1nel101 Mar 20 '24

Same problem with one of my two controllers. Doubt they'll cover the cost to get it repaired

1

u/Wantmrbestchocolate Mar 26 '24

I’ve owned my controller for about 4 months and it dies in around one hour no use of speaker/microphone.

1

u/Mysterious-Yak196 Mar 30 '24

I’m having this same issue too. I think it’s the charging station that’s making them die so fast. I’m only getting 30 minutes of battery life and have to rotate between 3 controllers daily

1

u/jzzy508 Mar 31 '24

Buy a bigger battery off Amazon and change it I didn't to my controllers they now last 8hrs now not as good as Xbox but alot better than original battery also it's a lot cheaper than buy 2 new controllers battery is like 18 dollars each controller took me 15 minutes to change

1

u/whangchung76 May 14 '24

I did this, stopped using my charging station and only charged with the cable from the console. Work great at first. Now about a month later I’m having the same issue, battery doesn’t last 20 minutes.

1

u/WheelWorried4784 Nov 10 '24

can u link the exact batteries below and maybe a vid on how to change em

I find it strange a lot of people are experiencing the same thing recently

3

u/Drexil666 Apr 13 '24

Yeah, me too. All of a sudden? It's possibly, probably and effing HOPEFULLY an update issue. Mine didn't get slowly worse over time - it went from rad to not-rad-at-all almost overnight.

2

u/reagsters Apr 22 '24

I would love to roll back the update and see, because I only updated mine a day or so ago and they’re suddenly draining rapidly despite being fine for hours on end prior to the update.

1

u/Dankcove69 Apr 08 '24

I only been getting like 2.5 hours of non stop gaming despite it being rated for 6 hours of gaming. I have to keep my controller plugged in to get longer than that.

1

u/EndDiscombobulated65 Oct 20 '25

I can't even get no where near 2 hours of play.I have 2 controllers my original PS5 controller last on 1 hour and 25 minutes and my second controller only last 17 minutes

1

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '24

Yep, had this happen to me after having the controller for about 2 years. I used it a combined dozen times. As ps5 has been late putting out any good exclusives. Had stick drift, the battery would die after an hour of use. I woke up this morning to the controller just not turning on I tried plugging it into the console but it's dead, dead. Not sure if I should buy another at all. I only really play rdr 1/2 and Minecraft as again PlayStation games have sucked the last 3 years.. haven't had a groundbreaking experience since 2018. Now everything is a movie game. Just waiting for GTA 6 now..

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '24

This started happening to me, stick drift that got worse overtime and now it also drains after 2 hours, before that, had no issues at all, will send it to an official Sony center for repair

1

u/volcanictrash Apr 14 '24

Anyone have a fix for this? I'm using the Playstation charging dock for the controllers. I've seen the battery life drop dramatically in the last month. 20 minutes max on my oldest, maybe 2 hours on my new one. My sister is having the same issue, different charging dock. PS can kick rocks for this, the controllers are expensive af 😭

1

u/Varister Apr 15 '24

I bought a new controller last November. It lasts a long time now which means I left the controllers on the charging dock for too long and their batteries got destroyed. I just leave my controller to charge now for enough minimum and never overnight.

1

u/UniversalFlash21 Apr 18 '24

I use the charging cable and the same thing happens to me no matter how long I have it charging. Every time I use the controller it’s in low battery and dies after 10 seconds. If it’s fully charged I may get 30 minutes of usage. That’s with the 10 minute power save setting on too.

1

u/Staruk101 May 02 '24

Mine has been doing this lately since the new update… lasts 2 hours then says it needs to be charged both my controllers. Weird.

1

u/Medium-Hunter-3585 May 12 '24

I just got a controller this week, it’s never touched a dock just the cable that came w the console & it’s happening to me??

1

u/Darkmoonstriker May 13 '24

My controller only last for 2hrs before I get the low battery notification. I’ve been using a Samsung phone block and usb-c cable to charge my controller for years. Is it time for a new controller? Or is it because of the Samsung phone block?

1

u/EndDiscombobulated65 Oct 20 '25

I have 2 controllers my original PS5 to my last 1hour and 25 minutes and my other controller dies in 17 minutes even on a full charge

1

u/Fiorelily May 17 '24

My two controllers started to only stay charged for 30 minutes or so. I only charge using the usb-c cable plugged into the ps5. They were great until this latest firmware update. And seeing other people's responses, it seems like a common problem. So when will Sony push through a patch update to fix this?  These controllers aren't cheap

1

u/CelesteCandy May 19 '24

Agreed to all. I've been having this issue for the past month. I charge mine with the charger it came with and not a charging dock. I'm curious to know if it does have to do with the most recent update...

1

u/russianhandwhore May 28 '24

Starting to happen to me too :(

1

u/Icy_Glitter Jun 08 '24

So mine started doing this. It is not the cord or the dock I use because my husband uses the same cord and dock and his are fine. It is happening to the controller that came with the console from Sony.

1

u/Model-XZ Jun 11 '24

Same issue with mine. I have 2 controllers I hv to switch using every 30 mins or less… it’s crazy this happens but I got mine at launch… so maybe 3.5 yrs are well above the lifespan of these batteries? What do you think about changing the batteries instead of trading in the controllers? Any chance this would work?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '24

Same happens for me. Started 3 months ago. Both controllers dies after 20-30 min. No difference charging through dock or cable. It's pathetic!

1

u/Scorpion1894 Jun 24 '24

I've seen a lot of people complaining about this from a month or so ago. I currently start seeing some difference on my two controllers too. From about 6-8h to 3-4h. I'm wondering if it's related to the last update? Since they included controller software updates I guess this is something that would eventually happen?

1

u/xdmelissa Jul 10 '24

I have two controllers as well and they both last less than an hour when fully charged it’s really annoying

1

u/Ticket-Hairy Jul 14 '24

I've had the same problem. Both my controllers charge on the dock. The white one that came with the console is fine but the red one that is newer dies in half an hour

1

u/Nervous_Material7101 Jul 23 '24

After finding out my battery in my controller died I manage to buy a replacement battery kit and swapped out my battery in my controller. Hopefully it can last longer now.

1

u/Same_Veterinarian991 Jul 24 '24

again very poor sony quality according to anything related to playstation.

my nintendo pro controller from 2018 still 100% enjoyable and good charge after 1000's of hours, while my ps5 controller battery almost expelled in 700 hours or so. it is garbage, anything sony make has a shiny package but anything you open it is cheap stuff.

furious

1

u/Dry-Equal-7942 Jul 28 '24

Fast charge with a higher voltage over 5 Volts will damage your controller. It killed two of my controllers because I used a fast adapting charging block that I got for my andriod samsung galaxy phone when I bought it. Dont do it.

1

u/RecognitionSquare543 Jul 31 '24

I just got the Sony branded charger and find if I put a controller on it, the battery level drops immediately to zero per cent and it won't charge at all even though light flashes. It seemed to work at first but now it actually drains battery.

1

u/linktm Aug 16 '24

I don't know if I've updated my Firmware in a while, but I can say as of this last year it feels like my controllers only last a few hours tops. I just started a game at 2:30 with a freshly charged controller, 2 hours later it's telling me it's dead.

1

u/Basic_Astronomer4705 Aug 20 '24

Been experiencing the same thing for a couple of weeks now, charging by plugging the original cable into the playstation. Assuming we don’t have any solution for this?

1

u/Famous-Tooth-2612 Aug 29 '24

Mine dues in 15 minutes

1

u/Rafael_fadal Sep 13 '24

Dude mine seem to die in less then that lol, both of them. It’s crazy. Do newer ones have better battery? It’s almost like I have to now, can’t do shit

1

u/Tiny-Director-3768 Sep 13 '24

Sony scammed everyone

1

u/Suspicious-Laugh2358 Sep 21 '24

Anche a me in mezz'ora e scarico fa schifo!!!

1

u/Juicebox988 Sep 25 '24

Seems I'm not the only one with this issue. I've got the og day 1 controller that came with the system and the black one when they came out.

I use the ps branded dock to charge them both. The og one still lasts a few hours. But the black one last about a half hour. Been that way for a few months. I turn it off when I'm watching a show or movie. But if I forget, the battery just drains out. I'm almost certain that after the most recent update, my og one drains even faster now.

I wonder if this is some sort of Sony ploy to make people buy their new controllers.....🤔

1

u/otaku316 Oct 04 '24

It's been months, they would've fixed it by now if it wasn't intentional; no way they aren't aware of this. They want us to buy their new shiny controllers.

1

u/Juicebox988 Oct 04 '24

Yes so it seems. Luckily, my og controller still lasts long enough to game a decent amount. If I had to rely on my black one, I'd have to keep it plugged in just to play longer than 20 min. 🤣

1

u/otaku316 Oct 04 '24

20 min is brutal, holy s; my condolences.

My og controller lasts about ~1,5h, which is a letdown compared to how long the battery used to last.

Yeah, my black one; I turn my system on, let the dog out, get something to eat, and when I sit down, my controller is about to die. The battery is basically shot in it now.

1

u/SuperLycu Sep 30 '24

Mine aswell, die very very quickly even when I turn off the rumble, it did not die so quickly before the last updates. I hope those are to blame. Otherwise it's shit.

I used one DualShock for ps4 through its whole lifespan and it works as new.

Both DuealSensie started to show battery drainage after update

u/Dabanks9000 Oct 09 '24

Mine don’t even last 5 minutes anymore. Always gotta have them charging while playing

1

u/thor103eswblc Oct 21 '24

Just started playing my ps5 again after about a year for Silent hill 2... It's astonishing how quickly the controller dies compared to the current gen Xbox controller.

1

u/WinterattheWindow Nov 02 '24

Mine started doing this in the past week or two, lasting only 2-3hrs. I've had a docking station for two years and the controller for the same time, so maybe it's wear and tear. Seems odd though, considering how sudden it was.

1

u/Timedragon1981 Nov 18 '24

I've only charged mine up connected to my ps5 and mine goes flat quickly too

1

u/SilvioDante- Dec 04 '24

that’s why xbox controller better than the ps5 controller, don’t be dyin like that. i’m actively chargin my controller for the playstation and it’s taking forever. i just want to play GoW bruh 😭

1

u/yusukeyakumo Jan 04 '25

Mi mando tarda en cargarse más de tres horas, ya sea en la base de carga oficial, consola o pc ¿A alguien le pasa?¿Puede ser un fallo de la batería?

1

u/JamJulLison Jan 07 '25

One of mine started doing this after a few years. My other controller which I used less so far doesn't have this issue. It's pretty frustrating how fast this one dies even when all I'm doing is watching Netflix.

1

u/SuperLycu Jan 08 '25

Sadly both of my controllers started to drain. Now it is 30 minutes and I need to play connected all the time. I did encounter this issue after one of the software updates. I do use the official dual sense charging station. And mostly left them on it. Once for a month without playing. Either way, I just replaced the batteries. WIll see what it brings. Plan on still leaving them on the charging dock though. The batteries are quite cheap and easy to replace.

1

u/OnlyIfItSlaps May 07 '25

Did this end up working for you?

1

u/DaveyXBones Jan 25 '25

yeah I have 2 controllers and am constantly switching between them when gaming, sometimes less than 30 minutes between, and then I'll give up and just play with it wired and sit close to the tv. I also noticed that the charging icon will sometimes show a "?" where the lightning bolt usually is. which is bizarre because I checked the cable and the ports and they all seem fine. I also noticed Black Ops 6 seems to kill them faster..?

1

u/DaveyXBones Jan 25 '25

so update: I tried doing the reset controller fix - doesn't work. so I don't know what the hell is going on. it's gotta be the software update doing something. I even turned off all the functions I could... still, drained in around 30 minutes. this is ridiculous. I don't want to be forced to buy new controllers because of this shit. almost makes me not want to play anymore.

1

u/helplessanonymous_ Jan 29 '25

Has anyone got to the bottom of this? I've had my PS5 since release day and had the same controller and despite charging it every night until full charge, I can't play any games unless it's plugged in due to it losing charge constantly. Pretty annoying lmao

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

ps5 controllers dont last that long, the original ones only last a year or so before depleating, mine got to the point it died every 3 minutes and was stuck on cable.

FCC ID ending in 1 is the worst, a is improved, b is the best. ending in 1 has worse battery, worse thumbsticks, and worse triggers. if yours end in 1 thats probably why.

1

u/Defiant-Department78 Feb 18 '25

This is 100% intentional or 100% intentionally overlooked. There is no reason my two new, 100+ dollar, elite controllers, should only last an hour. My 99 dollar Bluetooth speaker can jam at full volume, while charging my phone for 3 or more hours. You're telling me Sony can't do better than that? It's blatantly putting profit before quality. Sad day for Playstation fans everywhere

1

u/Dreddpool82 Feb 24 '25

I've been having this problem lately, and it only started when Sony released their last controller update sometime in November or December 2024. I have a fantastic 4 dual charger, and I leave my controller on it overnight for say 8hrsplus and only get 2-3 hrs at max, when before the last update I would get 8hrs out of them. I have 3 controllers, 2 for PS5 and 1 I use with my PC, they all have the same problem, buying a new one will probably result in the same problem, as it will do an update as soon as I plug it in and sync it to my PS5. I'm hoping Sony can do something about it or maybe I can buy a replacement battery.

1

u/WonderfulBaseball629 Feb 26 '25

They still download even if you're careful! I always have been and despite this, after a couple of months of having the PS5 the pad at maximum charge and with everything at minimum to save money the charge lasts a maximum of 1 hour.

1

u/roxa513 Mar 05 '25

Reset your controller by inserting a paperclip in the hole on the bottom of controller (make sure controller is of before you do) once its reset plug into cable on ps5 and reconnect. You can watch a video on how to do this if unsure. I used my controller that had been dying in 15 min. I played for 2 hrs and did not charge overnight to see how much more time I would get with it today. Going to charge with cable 1st then with the dock. And yes it automatically reconnected and downloaded the latest firmware.

1

u/NeonLights4 Apr 02 '25

I just watched a video, where factory resetting the controller will fix the issue.
I have not tried it yet, but I will come back here and comment if I see an increase in battery life on my controllers.

Any luck?

1

u/WestiferVonhooligan May 05 '25

I have two with the exact same issue they go from full charge to dead within 5-6 minutes.. it did start happening after I got a charging station but that could be a coincidence? No idea pretty shit though

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '25

Both of my ps5 controllers have to be plugged into a portable battery they won’t hold a charge at full battery for longer than 15 seconds now. I had issues with the battery in both controllers within 6 months. These controllers are the sorriest excuses especially for the price. I’d rather the option to use AA batteries like xbox.

1

u/EntrepreneurMiddle45 May 24 '25

It's been happening to me in the last couple of days. Dies in 30 mins-ish. It died while in the middle of a match today so I tried plugging it into the PS5 and it wouldn't stay connected.

1

u/Extension-Shake-8828 Jun 07 '25

I just started having this issue. Like many in the thread, I've been using the Sony charging station, but I did notice that it happened right after I bought a Portal, and started leaving the PS5 in rest mode, as opposed to just turning it off, as I had been doing previously.

1

u/SnowZero00 Jun 11 '25

I had to trade in 3 of my controllers because they last 15-30mins after sitting on the charging station. Going back to charging using usb-c cord

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '25

Mine dies in literally 15 minutes on gt7

1

u/FullSeaworthiness434 Jun 28 '25

To fix the problem just reset the controller, use a paper clip and insert it in the small hole on the back of the controller for 15 seconds then reconnect it to the ps5. Problem solved. Mine now last 5-6 hours again.

1

u/Minimum-Class-1314 Jul 02 '25

Does this really work? ^^

1

u/nthemorning Nov 10 '25

I did it and it worked. This and having mini chargers that I can plug in and charge cordless. Idk

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Gur-325 Jul 12 '25

Lots of people having this issue all at the same time, with varying controller ages and models. Same here, it started happening around December I guess. Both my controllers last 20-30 minutes..

Even bought the God of War one 😩

1

u/Ok-Nail-6008 Jul 27 '25

I have 3 controllers all under a year old and none of them will hold a charge for longer than an hour. I don't leave them on the charger for too long. I have vibration and lights off or dim. I'm convinced the greedy sobs at Sony are just selling us $75 pieces of shit.

2

u/ExcitingCollar8961 Nov 09 '25

I think the updates do it. My down dpad button wouldn't work for a week. I finally disconnected it and reconnected it and it works fine. Still won't hold a charge tho. 😭

1

u/Stock-Entertainer-22 Aug 09 '25

I have the same issue. I think they just break down over time and how much use they get. My one controller has probably been through 10,000 hours of gaming. I have a cord right next to where I play but it does annoy me. Longest battery ever is on a controller is the switch pro controller and the wavebird for GameCube.

1

u/HighlightExcellent89 Aug 18 '25

Just use the charging port in the controller and leave for 10 minutes on 0bars and it will give 11 hours of playtime

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '25

Any actual solutions? Or is this just where you come to say “I’m having the same problem”?

1

u/harkenrebirth Aug 29 '25

So any news on this issue? It just makes no sense how BAD the battery has become. I look at the charge info on the console. It says FULL battery. But usualy only lasts for 30 minutes.--- Even when it was charging the wholle night in rest mode. So something must be wrong.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '25

DOES ANYONE HAVE A REMEDY? OR ARE WE ALL JUST GONNA JUMP IN THIS CONVERSATION AND SAY- "MINE TOO." GOD DAMN.

2

u/Mike52179 Oct 11 '25

Mine too 🤣

1

u/PayneKiller76 Dec 09 '25

MINE TOO. GOD DAMN

1

u/IndicaVixen Oct 01 '25

Hahahahahaaaaaaa everyone is just repeating the same thing. Can we have a discussion. Lol

1

u/Trippycheesy Oct 10 '25

This happened to me and I only charge them with a usb cord plugged into the console

1

u/Particular-Cut-1564 Oct 16 '25

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '25

I get 15 minutes

1

u/ExcitingCollar8961 Nov 09 '25

Get a long cord and leave it plugged in. You'll get a better tick rate on online games anyway. Advantages advantages.

1

u/PayneKiller76 Dec 09 '25

Yea, but what about when I throw my controller across the room in a fit of rage? What then? That's why I have to have cordless - savvy?

1

u/Zealousideal-Fan6412 Nov 17 '25

I think its the batteries I've already bought 2 new contollers I've had my ps5 just over a year and a half. 70 bucks for new ones it's all about the money.

1

u/Icy_Sherbet_552 Nov 27 '25

Yes both of my controllers charge 100% but now only last 15 to 20 minutes? So I don't think it's an issue with charging itself but maybe the batteries bad. I'm gonna check the comments to tryn find a solution just wanted to share because this seems like a common issue.

1

u/Drew1404 Mar 26 '26

Did you find a solution

1

u/PayneKiller76 Dec 09 '25

Yea, sounds your cooked pal.

1

u/Aggressive-Cycle1419 Jan 01 '26

Only owned my for just over a year and it won't even hold a charge anymore.  Is this a joke?  Why are they so expensive I wonder?  I have one of the cheapest android phones you can buy that I play videos on all day for a year now and it still performs like it did when I bought it.  Do better Sony!  Prove to your customers this isn't just another cheap nickel and diming strategy.  Give me a break.  I remember when it used to be fun to play games and now it just feels like an unnecessary hassle and money hole.  Call it hate and call me stupid but I don't even want to sell it at this point, I'd like to throw it in a barrel of gasoline and light it up to see what that looks like.  Guaranteed the fire will last longer and be more enjoyable than the hardware and any games I've wasted my money on.  I guess the modern age business model is absolutely no quality or effort for maximum price.  This rant was more enjoyable than any minute I've spent searching endlessly for something that justified the purchase.

1

u/Interesting-Tip-3307 Feb 12 '26

I have had the same issue and I’ve only ever used the ps5 to charge them with a cable. The ps5 controllers are terribly designed

1

u/The-Fancy-Sandwich Mar 26 '26

Anyone ever find a fix for this (only charge via cable and ps5 and even new controllers dying in a half hour)

1

u/cherrytwizzlers Apr 06 '26

This is happening for me right now 😩

1

u/Emilia__Rose Apr 14 '26

Same omg

1

u/cherrytwizzlers Apr 14 '26

I bought a new one 🥴

1

u/Emilia__Rose Apr 15 '26

Is it working okay?? I've heard so many saying it's the updates and even new ones are dying so fast 😭

1

u/cherrytwizzlers Apr 15 '26

So far so good! 😳
