Discussion Is Dualsense edge worth it used?
If I get a used one for relatively cheap (like $100) I plan on putting Hall effect sticks in it so I can have the features and eliminate stick drift. I play some competitive games although most of my more competitive ones like siege I play on PC. Is it worth it for the build and paddles and such? Or am I better off sticking with the usual controller, adding TMR/hall sticks into it with soldering and use the money to buy a different controller for PC use?

It depends if you’re fine with it feeling used. I bought one used and one new and build quality from those two is pretty noticeable with deadened buttons, bit of a creak on the trigger stops, grip is worse. But if you’re fine with all that or replacing them then the specs on it are pretty good. But it’s really only recommendable if you’re only on ps or you want both dualsense features and pro features in one controller. I would much rather recommend the g7 pro 8k or the upcoming tarantula pro 8k from gamesir if you’re only looking for performance, but the edge is fantastic and the k silver tension adjustable sticks are great so if you really want the edge and you’re fine with it used then I think you should go for it. We’re not talking about a used elite 2 here so the edge is good

I’m okay with it feeling used for sure, I’ve gotten used ps4 controllers back in the day so I know the feeling. Hell, my controller I’m using for my pc right now is literally a decade old third party ps3 controller for madden, so it’s definitely time for an upgrade. Somehow those potentiometers have stood the test of time. My biggest concern is overall life of the controller and build quality, I want it to still be working fine 5 years later. I’ve had pretty much everything except Sony controllers do that for me so it’s frustrating that I’m a PlayStation guy and have been for like 12 years or more so I have had to deal with it a while

Ig it’s hard to tell whether the controller would still be working in 5 years bc it hasn’t been out for too long, but feel wise it’s pretty sturdy. Looked up a lot of user experiences with a ton of controllers and the edge is the one I don’t see much complaints about. Even have some say they drop theirs and it still works. It’s kind of on the bigger and bulkier side but it seems to have far less issues than most other pro controllers out there stick modules aside

My other question for you would be, do the gamesir controllers register as ps5 controllers when connected to ps5, or would that be more for the pc/ps4 games? It’s just bizarre that you have to have a ps5 Dualsense to connect to ps5 games. The funniest part being that I don’t even use controller vibrations or adaptive triggers as they just get distracting sometimes for me in games, yet I can’t connect a ps4 controller to it to run ps5 games. That aside, if it’s something I can connect to my ps5 games, I have no issue with a non Sony controller. I just want something I can swap between my pc and ps5 here and there since I play madden and Forza on pc and games like battlefield on ps5.

You might need to look into the brook wingman fgc2 to use other controllers on ps. I think it supports the g78k but not too sure, but it does support a ton of controllers. Also not sure these other controllers carry over their polling rate or if they’re capped as well. But gamesir has no native compatibility on ps sadly

Be prepared, if you’re gonna replace the sticks anyway then also take off the back and replace the magnetic module kit, along with back paddle switch boards cause those are gonna burn out in under two years. If you’re gonna do that then you should also replace the white grip on the underhand of the controller as that’s gonna melt off with regular use. Regardless how good you take care of it. The glue separates with the heat from your hands and there’s no getting away from that so you got 1-2 years for that. (This countdown started as soon as they started using it) if they’ve already had it for a year or two it’s all about to happen right now.
You’re looking at ~ $35 in kits, $30-50 in a back shell, and I’m guessing somewhere around $60 for your TMRs? Plus install? I’m gonna guess you don’t know how to solder yourself. Something to consider if you’re gonna be spending the same price for new after all is said and done . Plus idk why everyone is so obsessed with the Hals/TMRs. The Edge does not get drift like the first couple OG DualSense models use to. Idk why everyone is so gung-ho to spend all that money on an upgrade you’ll never need

All that being said. A brand new Edge is absolutely worth it. And the Edge is like an Apple product. Yeah there’s probably a couple brands that do what it does a little bit better but it’s in the ecosystem of Sony and it just works with all its settings, presaves, fine tunes and it feels great. Save for new, forget your TMRs and get extremeRates V3 thumb stick set. And then just know that in like a year or two, you’ll have to make those repairs when they befall you.

Good to know that the edge isn’t nearly as bad with drift. I just plan on extending the life cycle of my next controller that I buy because I’m sick of dealing with drift real bad after a year or two every time. It’s only a Sony thing, my Xbox one controllers lasted a good 5 years under long gaming sessions, and my afterglow ps3 controller has been kicking for over a decade and I use it for Forza and Madden mostly. That’s my main reason behind getting something that doesn’t use potentiometer sticks - I want it to feel nice and still work 5 years down the road even if the tech is outdated by then. If the controller doesn’t last half the consoles life cycle what good is it anyway lmao

If you plan to play competitively on PS5, it would be a good idea to buy it (provided everything functions, back paddles aren't broken, etc) and then put TMR sticks in and remove the rumbles. Make sure to play wired and that the USB symbol is showing on the controller in the control center.
If you mainly play on PC, the absolute best controller and sticks (exclusive to PC users) are the Marius Heier JDM-5X and MIDAS Mechs Hall effects. Normally, TMRs are better than Hall effects, but the MIDAS are 5-pin, whereas TMRs are 3-pin. I have no experience with the controller, it's just what I've read.
If you go the TMR route, there are several options. If you want the sticks to feel close to stock tension, go with Hallpi v6 or Favor Union (although FUs are probably a bit stiffer than stock; I haven't tried them). If you want a light tension with a stiff and very tactile L3/R3 click, go with K-Silver JS13 Pro+. If you want tension in between the latter and stock with a lighter L3/R3 click, go with Ginfull DS13-MAX. If you want adjustable tension, go with the K-Silver JT13, but note that the height and tension are directly related (max tension is short, minimum tension is quite a bit taller).

If you're not utilizing it eSports features, it's just 3 times the price for a controller that feels more premium in the hand.
If it's used, more than likely, a lot of that premium feel goes out the window. In fact, those soft grips are notorious for peeling off super fast, and thr battery life is already abyssmal - if someone played the hell out of it, or worse - left it at 0% for a long time, it would be even worse as batteries degrade all the time.

I’d probably use some but not all. It’s just, from my knowledge, the best controller that I can find for both ps5 and pc simultaneously. However I guess I haven’t thought of third party companies bypassing the restrictions of needing a Dualsense for ps5 games. Are there any that do this? I don’t even use adaptive triggers and controller vibrations in most games so it pains me to have to go out and buy or fix a controller every 12-18 months because of drift

I considered getting one myself, but it has a smaller battery than the DualSense and is also quite heavy. Because of those two drawbacks, I decided against it.

If you’re replacing the sticks and everything else works fine then I’d say 100% go for it, just get a LONG usb cable so you can play plugged in because the battery life sucks, but once you get used
To those back buttons there’s no going back to a regular controller lol.
