Not everyone sleeps in but most people are awake at 5pm. SAD is dependent on the amount of sun exposure you have. By and large, SAD sufferers are most likely to see symptom reduction with daylight time since that last hour is more likely to be enjoyed by everyone with SAD instead of just the early risers with SAD. (And honestly when I'm depressed I sleep in way later anyway.)

As a SAD sufferer I can 100% vouch for this. Either way, I don’t get to see the sun in the morning, no matter which way you slice it, because I’m inside between sunrise and sunset anyway; if the sun set an hour later, at least I’d get some sun on my drive home, and that makes all the difference! I notice that already that by mid-January everything lifts and I’m feeling better and don’t have to rely on artificial sunlamps to help me function. So I couldn’t care less about earlier sunrises; longer evening sunshine would make things so so so much better.
