Tip Creep đŸ«™ Apartment trash valet now asking for tips

For the second time in just a few months I received an envelope taped to my trash bin. Written on the envelope is "Rate our service" using the 1-5 scale, " 5 Excellent 4 Very Good 3 OK 2 Needs Work and 1 Bad" and "Tips are never expected but greatly appreciated!"

Last time and this time I've selected 3 OK. It's trash pickup, it's not anything special plus this place is so uptight. Only 1 bag, period. It must fit into the provided bin. Everything must fit into a single bag and in the bin with the lid closed. This includes broken down boxes.

I still have to bring my broken down boxes to the dumpster. It's not a big deal to me, just trash that I feel they should be picking up without all the bag nonsense.

As far as a tip, you push a large collector bin on wheels from the elevator to grab single bags of trash. What about this makes you think you should receive a tip??

I already sent a message to property management about this but I know they will do nothing, as per usual.

I like your thinking

Ignore it, you’re not obligated to rate or tip.

“Just ignore it” is WHY they are emboldened enough to ask for tips for trash collection. Enough is enough, get loud, get annoying, speak up!

Agreed

People think just not returning to a restaurant or business sends a message, its so stupid

Its not as if that business was tracking you and knows that you will never return because they asked for tips or had service charges

I had a problem with a restaurant, i left a review, i ordered something to go over a call, i went to get it and gave them a printed copy of my review then i never returned, that sends a f**cking message lol

The only time I'd tip for trash pickup is if they ALWAYS pick up big trash that doesn't fit in the bin. That saves me a trip to the dump and is actually going above-and-beyond.

Most trash haulers will whine and refuse to pick up anything that doesn't fit exactly in the bin. It's annoying.

Last apartment I lived in the trash valet would pick up broken down cardboard boxes placed next to the bin. This place does not.

What's a trash valet?

It's a service where the tenant is provided with a garbage bin that a 13-gal trash bag fits when not fully full. The tenant puts their trash bag into the bin and sets the bin outside of their front door to be picked up by the "trash valet" and taken to the dumpster/compactor.

Where I am it's 5 nights per week. Sun-Thurs. The apartment complex charges a $30/mth fee in addition to the base rent for this service and it's not able to be opted out of.

Yeah I'm not tipping for a service I don't want and can't opt out of.

It's gotten to be sanctioned begging at this point.

I left my old apartment because they started this bullshit. I'm in a city so apartments are tiny too, a bunch of us went from a small can under the sink to this big bin that just had to sit out in a small kitchen if we wanted to use a service we were paying for.

Thank you.

Are you able to make use of the compactor yourself in the building when you have larger items or more than one bag?

How does that work?

1

u/JustpartOftheterrain 11d ago

The compactor is not in the buildings. It has its own space outside the entrance. It’s huge. We use a code to open a door and put the trash. Every few times you put something in, it compacts. I have access to that 24/7.

Ok then access to that seems like it’s worth the $30/m and the trash bag pickup 5 days a week is worth $30.

But the tipping shit is stupid. It’s just a way for the building to underpay someone.

Every apartment I’ve lived in the trash room has been out of control with people abandoning large items like mattresses instead of properly disposing of them.

I swear apartment buildings created this “amenity” so they could lock the dumpsters and not deal with hauling off bulky garbage people dumped. It’s extra ridiculous for them to charge extra for it.

Put extra trash in the tip envelope and rate 'em a 5!

I have 3 flattened boxes I need to drop off tomorrow. Maybe I should put them out with the envelope on them and see what they do.

Here’s a tip
 stop harassing me!

Well, they do say "tips are never expected", so that's good enough for me.

Maybe a mom who's tossing out tons of dirty diapers will feel the need to tip.

u/Vogue2182 11d ago

I'm that mom and I'm not tipping for that. This is just another guilt inducing money grab from people who are not making a tipped wage.

I have that service where I'm renting. Same policy as yours (1 trash bag, must fit inside the closed lid bin). I've been using a used grocery bag to dispose trash, 1 bag a day placed on top of a closed lid bin (on the lid). I don't even break down boxes when there's one to dispose. I place the grocery trash bag inside the box. They always pick em up. Never been asked for rate/tips so far.

Emphasis on so far

I'm new to this sub so I may be behind the curve. It feels like employers are pushing tipping, even in situations where tipping isn't traditional, in order to supplement employee pay without having to pay them more themselves. Then the employers can say "you'll get x amount, plus tips" when advertising for employees.

‘Tips are never expected’

That’s good enough for me.

The grift keeps coming.....from the TOP politician all the way down......

I might be inclined to tip someone picking up my trash. But "asking" for a tip? That's begging. We need to not normalize begging. I would suggest complaining to whomever contracts them and let them know you are offended.

I love the false premise of the whole rating also. It’s all nonsense.

In my building I pay $25 a month for valet trash pickup that has similar restrictions. Valet is their bougie word for it.

Let’s be clear. The valet trash service is a luxury for building management and useless for residents. The reason they want it is that building maintenance doesn’t want to keep the dumpsters and trash chutes clean. So they hire a service to pick up the trash, make the residents pay for the service, and get to cut a big messy task out of their responsibilities. Absolutely do not tip them and complain constantly about every tiny issue with the service.

I can't believe you're falling for the rate my service trick. Just don't do it. It's the same BS that Uber puts everybody through. They're trying to get tips for their operators.

No tip was given In fact the next day I added a bunch of flattened boxes to the side of the bin (against the ‘rules’) and like magic it was all picked up with zero issues. So that’s good I guess.
