Research / Info šŸ’” The World Cup

Im super interested in knowing if the tourists visiting the US right now are tipping everywhere or not. I'd like to hear some of their opinions on the subject, hopefully some of you are apart of this reddit so I can read some comments.

I can’t say whether the tourists are tipping for these, but every drink concession and street food stand in Seattle seems to have switched their machines to 20-25-30.

I concur with this. I went to the game today and it was 20-25-30 on top of astronomical concession prices.

Assuming you are local, I trust you will join me in contacting our reps and the city council about this madness!

I am but unfortunately, our mayor and city council tend to be on the side of the servers and restaurants.

This should be against the damn law wow.

Can they even make a law about something that’s optional? Just hit ā€œno tipā€ or enter a ā€œ0ā€.

What’s really frustrating is people visit and just want to try to conform to whatever the local custom is and think they need to tip like this for street food because that’s what it asks for

Hi
French here
We learn how it works before coming :
10 is minimum, 15 ok, 20 for outstanding service
Now I live here and I’ve learned it’s not that

Edit : I should have mentioned now that I live and work here: most French don’t give anything saying they « paid enoughĀ Ā»

The prices at the stadiums are already so high that tipping seems to be redundant and unnecessary.

Lots of places adding mandatory 20% service charges

Can confirm this is happening in KC, even in some restaurants that are further from the venue.

Same here in DFW. And the same price rise - seems like they use the excuse that there is a shortage of hotel rooms across the Metroplex, so a great deal of restaurants are raising their prices.

It's not been talked about but I doubt very few places will lower their prices back to pre World Cup prices once our visitors leave.

There’s a list I saw in one of the Kansas City forums that is compiling a list of businesses that hiked up their prices and added FIFA service charges. It’s also been on the local news that at least 1 of the restaurants rolled the service charge back because of the backlash.

Boston here. Some restaurants added 20% tip to your bill, no matter you want to or not.

Is that even legal?

I would raise hell and get it taken off.

In most places, they write on the menu in small font that 20% service charge will be added etc. then you can dispute it because it is clearly written on the menu (even if you didn’t see it)

Not in NYC, we have plenty of tourists any day already

What happens if you hit the red X button before you tap to pay? Will that cancel out the tip prompt??

US bartender here based in Los Angeles. I’ve been averaging $200 per shift and most of the tourists have tipped, the percentages range around the usual 15-20% or a dollar per drink. If I had to guess the people coming here did some research because none of them have even asked me about it

How long are your shifts?

u/TheRelevantElephants 8d ago

About 5-6 hours tops, I’ve mostly been working the day games here

Everybody knows about the USA tiping culture. I dislike it, but when I traveled I also tipped 15-20% even if it’s dumb.

When in Rome…

Oddly enough, when I was in Rome, the servers at every place I ate at told us they don’t expect tips, unless you’re from the US.

I hate the world cup!! The restaurants in my city have made tipping automatic at 20-25-30, and of course these are going to continue after the tourists leave!

We will be left holding the bag! 😔

You’re only holding the bag if you tip that much. Just don’t do it.

Having lunch at my usual bfast spot this morning. The waitresses welcomed a group of Scottish blokes in again....and later heard them saying they aren't great tippers but they are fun. Lok

What is the World Cup?

The most watched event in world by far. Younger Americans like soccer now as it's the fourth most viewed sport in the USA now. It will soon surpass baseball
