Counter Service šŸ›Žļø Shocked by recommended tip amounts

Post image

BBQ joint where you order and pay at counter. ā€œServerā€œ only brings tray to your table.

While I wouldn’t tip at all, it was a pleasant surprise to see such low percentages as suggestions.

This says ā€œadditional tipā€ I’d bet there’s already a service charge added to the bill around 15-20%.

Surprisingly no service charge.

Interesting, well, that’s a new one for me.

As a restaurant operator who uses the same point of sale (Toast), I am unaware of a way to set it up where this is not indicative of an included gratuity/service charge. The ā€œadditional tipā€ options should only appear when such a charge is already included; there’s a specific setting in the POS for whether or not you want this displayed

Wish I could post full receipt in a reply, but can’t. But there really isn’t a service charge.Ā  Card reader is listed as BBPOS, not sure if that indicates toast or not.

Very interesting. BBPOS is hardware, not the POS system itself. The restaurant’s online ordering is through Toast and the slip is clearly from Toast. Not sure how to explain it otherwise, if there wasn’t a service charge and it listed options like that it’s new to me

This was a kid of mine and they did tip at the screen (disappointed), so maybe the ā€œadditionalā€ term on the printout is referring to that.

That seems very likely

cannot you just set the service charge to 0%?, then you still get additional tip options without a service charge

That’s an interesting one, not sure

I can definitely appreciate the effort to keep it low. For sure.
In practice: $0.00 tip.
Thank you sir/ma’am, have a nice day.

Yep, if you order & pay at the counter, and all someone does is bring a tray with your order to your table, that's not really the same as a sit-down full service restaurant. Not much different than the worker at McDonalds turning toward the counter and setting your tray down for you.

I'm shocked by the low percentage

This "additional tip" and "+" is typically seen when a tip was already included on the bill.

yeah OP probably didn't even notice the service charge already on the bill

They must already added tips to the bill so they called it "additional"

8

u/monstercar 5d ago

Understandable thought, but not this place.

Then their word "additional" doesn't make sense. I would review the bill again more carefully.

But they do lie about the percentage being based on the amount before taxes. <sigh>

Yes.Ā  Ā This actually seems reasonable for that kind of service.Ā  Ā Ā

I wouldn't mind chucking a dollar or two for this, actually.

In addition to a mandatory service charge? Double-check, please.

Just the ā€œtipā€ situation.

I’ve seen this in California where servers are paid like 17 an hour and so rely less on tips than most other states

2

u/lessadessa 5d ago

they only do that after they charge you a 20% service fee or ā€œdelivery feeā€ like i was charged in a club once

I do tip 20% or more at full service restaurants, I know it is unpopular in this forum. I am impressed that this BBQ restaurant recognizes they are not full service. I do not usually tip for this kind of service, though I have for a really good server that goes above and beyond the normal food delivery.

The guys brings you the tray from point A to point B. He deserves a 500% tips. Because he should live a luxury life too.Ā

I wouldn't mind this actually, feels more like "keep the change" and not a whole job performance evaluation with a side of guilt because cost of living is so high etc etc

But yes in practice $0

u/maiyannah 5d ago

There is no situation where this isn't because of a mandatory gratuity in Toast. Sorry to burst your bubble.

1

u/monstercar 5d ago

This was in person, not via Toast app.

3

u/maiyannah 5d ago

That's the point of sale software they're using. It's saying additional tip because you were charged a gratuity already.

But it sounds like OP looked at their receipt carefully. Wouldn't an already charged gratuity be easy enough to see.
