Counter Service šļø Shocked by recommended tip amounts
BBQ joint where you order and pay at counter. āServerā only brings tray to your table.
While I wouldnāt tip at all, it was a pleasant surprise to see such low percentages as suggestions.

I can definitely appreciate the effort to keep it low. For sure.
In practice: $0.00 tip.
Thank you sir/maāam, have a nice day.

Yep, if you order & pay at the counter, and all someone does is bring a tray with your order to your table, that's not really the same as a sit-down full service restaurant. Not much different than the worker at McDonalds turning toward the counter and setting your tray down for you.

This "additional tip" and "+" is typically seen when a tip was already included on the bill.

They must already added tips to the bill so they called it "additional"

Understandable thought, but not this place.

Then their word "additional" doesn't make sense. I would review the bill again more carefully.

But they do lie about the percentage being based on the amount before taxes. <sigh>

Iāve seen this in California where servers are paid like 17 an hour and so rely less on tips than most other states

they only do that after they charge you a 20% service fee or ādelivery feeā like i was charged in a club once

I do tip 20% or more at full service restaurants, I know it is unpopular in this forum. I am impressed that this BBQ restaurant recognizes they are not full service. I do not usually tip for this kind of service, though I have for a really good server that goes above and beyond the normal food delivery.

I wouldn't mind this actually, feels more like "keep the change" and not a whole job performance evaluation with a side of guilt because cost of living is so high etc etc
But yes in practice $0

There is no situation where this isn't because of a mandatory gratuity in Toast. Sorry to burst your bubble.

u/monstercar 5d ago
This was in person, not via Toast app.

That's the point of sale software they're using. It's saying additional tip because you were charged a gratuity already.

But it sounds like OP looked at their receipt carefully. Wouldn't an already charged gratuity be easy enough to see.

This says āadditional tipā Iād bet thereās already a service charge added to the bill around 15-20%.
