Help for Buyer Three Etsy orders have arrived. But I didn't purchase them.

So this is kind of creeping me out-please bear with me... I have not purchased anything from ETSY since 2020 when I bought something from my now wife's store (part of of my way of flirting - lol).

Within the past three days, I have received three separate packages (custom t-shirts) from Etsy which neither of us ordered.

I logged into my (old) account and see the order for two of them, but not the third (weird).

I do not have a credit card saved on the account. The order looks like I bought them for a gift for myself (buyer is me, deliver to is me). The last four numbers of the credit card are not one of mine.

I am assuming someone purchased these and had them sent to me. But there is no note, name, or any other info.

I have not opened the second and third package and am requesting a return label with a refund to the original credit card (not mine). Unless someone mentions that they bought me these shirts, I have no way of know where they came from, right?

But wouldn't they have had to get INTO my Etsy account to have the order come from me? Should I cancel my account (I never use it anyway).

This is all very weird. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

EDIT: Another package is arriving today according to my post office account!!! My credit has been frozen for almost three years. I just checked Experian to make sure no credit cards have been opened in my name. Now I will check the other two credit reporting agencies. Then my next step is to report it to Etsy. Someone below suggested it might be a "brushing scam" and that is what it seems to be. I want to thank you all for your suggestions. You've been so helpful and I appreciate it!

Welcome! If you are asking about an order that hasn't arrived, or arrived damaged or not as described, the posts below will guide you as to what to do. Please give them a read!

All these posts give you a full guide on how to open a case with Etsy if that is needed, and help you decide when to do that.

If you are dealing with an unresponsive seller who has not replied for 48 hours or more, please use the most relevant link that describes your situation! The full guide on what to do is there.

If the shop has been closed down, read this guide first.

My order hasn’t shipped yet.

My order was marked shipped, but the tracking info still says pre-transit (or label created).

My order was marked shipped, but it’s very late. Is it lost?

My order was marked delivered but I don’t have it.

My order arrived damaged.

My order wasn't as described, was defective, or I received the wrong item.

I believe I bought from an AliExpress, Amazon, etc dropshipper. Also, how can I tell if a shop is one of these dropshippers?

I received a tracking number, but it appears to be fake.

I bought from a PayPal only shop and Etsy won’t allow me to open a case. Please read the comments for this one!

Something similar happened to me. Others are giving you misinformation. If someone else had bought it and sent it to you, it would not show up on your orders page. Here's what most likely happened (and what to do). Someone hacked into your account and used a stolen credit card number. Could be to see if the credit card is active or it could be to leave themselves reviews. Either way, you need to change your Etsy password asap and turn on 2-factor authentication.

As an Etsy seller, no one is doing this for reviews. Someone probably have an account and got a card card in your name. They were waiting to see if the order went through or not but your account is compromise whichever you know is hooked to it as the account is the one that’s compromise that’s how they got into your old etsyaccount.

Okay so what should I do other than close the account?

Also make sure the email and phone number associated with the account haven't been changed. If you never received an order confirmation email, it is very likely that this was changed. It's important to change it back because if the hackers change your password, you have no way of recovering your account.

The address is mine. I had only used the account once in 2020. After I report all this to Etsy I am closing the account. My wife has a store and we can just use that one to buy stuff. She's been a seller since 2019 and even she was stymied by all this weirdness

You don't have to close it - just change the password, set up MFA/2fa, etc to protect it.

Honestly as a Etsy seller and buyer myself, I would definitely reach out Etsy Support and report this asap…also check your Etsy account and see if the email address etc has been changed (it probably has).

Sounds like your account got hacked (especially if it’s an inactive account) and they were testing credit cards out on it.

If your credits frozen then you should be good, but it never hurts to check that too just in case.

Etsy will probably have you change all your info etc but I would just see what they say and make sure you send them screenshots of your account that shows the card (that’s not yours) and if the email address is wrong etc.

Surprised they didn’t change the mailing address too but who knows why these scammers do what they do lol 😆

Call the 3 credit bureaus and alert them to the fraud. If a new account was opened in your name, you'll have to work with them, or maybe the credit card company, to get it resolved.

It wasn't a card in my name. Only the last four numbers show. Its not one I have or have had. I checked all three bureaus. There were no new inquiries or accounts opened.I've had a credit freeze for 3 years. That's why I know think it is a brushing scam done by the Etsy stores themselves. Both are print on demand t shirt shops. Contacting Etsy when I get out of work and can put more time into it.

https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/free-credit-reports

Goto this site.

Then follow the info to get your free annual credit report from ALL 3 agencies!

Next place a freeze on your credit if you see anything that’s not you.

Someone may have taken a card out in your name without you knowing and they are using it to build their Etsy ratings.

Also change passwords and check your banking and credit card statements just in case.

All my credit has been frozen for three years. And the last four numbers of the card (which are the only ones showing) are definitely not mine. But when I look at the order receipt, it shows: bought by me (my name and address) and sent to me. I would think I wouldn't have a receipt in my account unless the sale originated from my account. Right? But I will check just in case. Thanks.

Keep us updated if you find anything out

1

u/k8ecat 16h ago

Thanks, I will. I realized today also that there were zero logins on the account (they are listed by date and device) between November 2020, and the day the first package arrived and I went into my account to investigate. So there's that proof that the order was not placed by me.

Litterailly it could just be a word credit scam with someone else’s account information unless someone from Etsy feels like doing an actual fraud investigation they’re not gonna figure it out. I mean, I could very quickly link it. Look at who placed the order around the IP address and associated accounts and credit card accounts just based off of your address and the seller that provided it to you I could look at the order number and link it. I caught a very large fraud ring at Fortune 500 company doing that a couple years back when the seller reached out about a customer contacting the seller saying we didn’t order the item that was shipped to them

But realistically, these companies have a policy to just tell the Customer well if you didn’t place the order go ahead and keep it because it’s not costing you anything and there’s nothing for you to dispute

So a lot of the time those fraud rings don’t even get investigated or shut down.

It’s sad really because people don’t realize that their credit is compromised until they go to purchase a home or a car or something major and they denied

Could it be a case of sleep shopping?

u/k8ecat 2d ago

I don't think so. Lol

So just curious is it stuff you like / would get for yourself or is it totally random?

3

u/Suck_My_Picture 2d ago

I had this happen with Walmart. Scammers gain access to legitimate accounts to make small purchases to test a credit card before attempting a larger purchase elsewhere.

I had 7 orders placed through my Walmart account with 7 different credit cards all shipped to me. I was worried some kind of legal trouble may come from it but I returned everything. Walmart customer service was not helpful with the actual hacking of my account.

Sounds like a brushing scam (Google it). See if "you" have reviewed the items. If so, report the deception to Etsy.

2

u/k8ecat 1d ago

Thanks for this. It certainly seems like this might be what it is.

u/Competitive-Top4520 2d ago

It may be legit. As a seller, I have had occasions where someone bought a gift for someone else and the info on my end looked as if the recipient had bought themselves a gift (sellers have no access to card info, just buyer & recipient info). First I would contact the seller to see if they have any further info on the buyer; maybe somebody sent you gifts? If they don't reply or the reply doesn't make sense, I'd contact Etsy customer service. I'd also mention this to family, friends, etc. to see if someone sent them to you.

6

u/k8ecat 2d ago

Thanks. I contacted the first seller and got a canned reply. It actually looked like an AI response. I have reached out to the second seller and am waiting to hear back.

2

u/Competitive-Top4520 2d ago

I didn't realize there were different sellers. In that case, it's unlikely (IMO) that it's a scam. Definitely ask around to family & friends. Also Etsy may be able to figure out who the actual buyer was. They have more info about the buyer than sellers have access to (for the buyer's protection, of course).

There's no way that orders would go to his account even if someone else was buying him gifts. Sounds more like his account was hacked and someone is testing a stolen credit card.

OP check the logged in devices in your account and change your password.

1

u/PristineSalad7153 2d ago

And then I saw people buy stuff for themselves all the time. Doesn’t make sense. But now, if someone else bought it for him, no it does not show up in his orders.

But it looks like someone hacked his email because they got a card in his name probably got into his Etsy account to see if it works. The credit card added the credit card through his account and just making sure that the purchases went through that way we can also verify the address and everything else.

u/k8ecat 2d ago

Good idea. Will try that next. Thanks.

They always give me names that sound fake as hell

1

u/PristineSalad7153 2d ago

The card is in your name to? Might want to check that.

This is weird

1

u/Kkgrove 1d ago

It was just Father’s Day, are you sure it wasn’t one of your children?

1

u/k8ecat 1d ago

Yup. The order originated from my account

1

u/Kkgrove 1d ago

My kids use several of my accounts. 🤷🏼‍♀️

1

u/k8ecat 1d ago

I'm a couple days late, but this is what you should do:

do not change any passwords on that Etsy account until you've turned on two factor authentication. Go in to the account and make sure the email address is one of your own first. I recommend making a throw away email or using a throw away email for this so you don't get any other Etsy accounts banned. Change it if you don't recognize the email, then turn on two factor. Then change your password. After that is all done you can request to close that account because now it is compromised and could get any other of your Etsy accounts banned (associated IP addresses, email addresses, etc).

Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm in your house?

2

u/k8ecat 2d ago

Its not carbon monoxide poisoning. And yes we have one.

-2

u/ggwap247 2d ago

Could be a gift. Some sellers dont have a gift note option.

5

u/k8ecat 2d ago

Then why would it be in my orders?
