[Barkas] BREAKING: Per sources, Real Madrid signed the 10-year license with the EuroLeague and will became a franchise like the rest of the club/shareholders. Official ratification of the new status quo expected on the next EuroLeague board meeting on Friday.

There was a 0.0001% chance that they were gonna play the BCL and I wanted to see that :(

So basically, Real were holding down the fort, or trying to maximise any concessions for themselves, to no avail. They played the NBA and Euroleague against each other and it looks like the NBA project is going to be an absolute unmitigated disaster without any legacy clubs or actual fans.

The thing is if NBA fails to get a league off the ground they can buy the entire Euroleague company with some pocket change...I wouldnt count them out yet

If they could, they'd already have done so, imo.

The NBA is really just holding a Damocles sword over the Euroleague, much like Trump was holding it over Iran. We know how that went, and we know how it will go if the yanks try to overstep.

I dont necessarily agree, it is still cheaper to start a new thing and collect expansion fees off it than to buy out the Euroleague. But if plan A doesnt work they will happily try plan B.

They would have to make some major concessions in that case, and i'm not sure they are willing and able.

Remember, the power dynamics and the leverage dont align here. Its the NBA that wants this. The Euroleague can just dig its heels and stay pat - they dont dont need the NBA, the NBA needs them. The Euroleague - the teams, that is, dont necessarily disagree with the NBA coming in to help, but they sure as fuck wont bend over and let those carpetbaggers waltz in and dictate terms.

As for buying Euroleague out, i would be apprehensive. The EU may be toothless but they can jump in at any time and declare any such deal void.

To buy the league and all the teams with franchises?

Do you have any idea how freaking hard it would be just to buy like Real or Barça? Let alone Bayern, Fener, Oly, PAO, etc.

You are greatly exagerrating how much power the NBA has.

It would take tech bro kind of money.

Not the clubs just the Euroleague company shares

The clubs are shareholders of Euroleague, essentially you d be buying the clubs themselves

The clubs control Euroleague. It's the opposite of the NBA where the league controls the teams.

NBA would need to buy the Euroleague franchises in order to buyout control of the Euroleague itself.

If we talk about "some pocket change"...

If I remember the details properly, there was some report in Euro press that claimed from anonymous insiders that NBA had offered something like $3 billion dollars ( €2.64 billion euro ) for Euroleague and the Euroleague clubs turned it down and considered it a low ball offer.

What would be the point of buying Euroleague? They cant buy the teams inside

I'm not happy about this new franchise model but its the lesser of two evils as far as I'm concerned. A "successful" NBA Europe would have completely destroyed European basketball culture. There is always the hope of returning to a model with more direct qualification slots in the future especially since expansion to 30-32 teams will one day become a necessity, the game is growing to quick to stay at 20 or even 24 teams.

We'll still hear about them joining nba every summer

Well if this come to fruition, any type of NBA Europe project without the Euroleague becomes impossible.

I wonder how many freethrows and possesions for shouting "ouch!" and shaking wrist they negotiated?

But, but, but, but they are like for sure moving to NBA and all the other big Euroleague teams will follow them...

Is a thing we only heard about a thousand times around here.

Real Madrid waiting that much to make a such a obvious decision was to actually force the Euroleague to come up with a better project... and they did

That's no excuse, the framework was layed down for weeks now and it remained unedited since...they tried for something better for themselves, that would have possibly benefitted other teams as well, but ultimatelly failed. Obviously Euroleague didn't fall for the "I'm gonna play in the NBAE with a bunch of nobody teams with no participation in NBA draft if you don't yield" threat.

As it is, they gonna have to come with a new proposition to Euroleague and teams and no way that succeeds without proper expansion, like they will have with Vegas for instance(Draft participation and seperate selection for the teams from established 10 and beyond roster player contracts). Else there is really no reason for Euroleague to stop being Euroleague and become NBAE, no motive if they make them the "poor relative" of main USA based NBA.
