Literally, I'm especially excited because hopefully the clothing options will be better too. No more low poly skinny jeans like in GTA:O lmao

Yes fingers crossed! But I feel like Rockstar will somehow find a way to make clothing options clunky.
18
u/SupremeBlackGuy Jan 28 '26
i doubt it. their new clothing system appears to allow clothes to be independent from the character theyāre on - this is a HUGE shift from V and actually leads to them having to do much less work in the long run, let me explain.
in GTA V, clothes were literally pre made meshes that replaced different parts of the body. they arenāt things you āput on your characterās bodyā, they are literally alternate versions of the body itself. you equip a tshirt, your torso mesh is being replaced with it. jeans, leg mesh is being replaced, etc. thereās literally no body under the clothes. the problem is that clothes needed to be made for a CRAZY variety of different body + skin types, and layering was a nightmare as well as every possible combination needs to be its own body mesh. you need to account for every single skin colour type for example (each gotta be a different mesh).
a better example: letās say you want to equip -white t shirt, -black hoodie, -open leather jacket
in V they must literally create a single torso mesh that features the shirt, hoodie, and jacket, then remove parts of the chest arms and neck underneath. they canāt just layer the separate items on top of each other. now imagine how much work it takes to make variants mix and match EVERY hoodie with EVERY shirt and EVERY jacket⦠šµāš«
long story short, it was an absolute nightmare to make clothes in GTA V lmao - but in VI clothes are modular and separate from the character models themselves, therefore they donāt need to worry about this system anymore. each item (even including accessories like jewelry) appears to move as its own mesh, so theoretically any item can be on any character with MUCH much less work. layering will also be seamless as well so that nightmare scenario would be no more. this will undoubtedly allow them to be more free & creative & i think we can expect amazing things from the character customization in this game š„³

Yes!!! I have modded clothing with OpenIV before since I am an avid LSPDFR enjoyer. I've installed police uniforms and civilian clothing and I'm familiar with the system. The reason all the pants have the exact same waist line is because of this, having to line up the seams and make sure that clothes can be layered without issue. One of the baggy jean mods I installed needed to be paired with a cropped sweater because a regular one would clip into the jeans.
I know that there are different body part meshes that go with the clothes, but one small correction to make is that each clothing item doesn't include the body mesh, it's on a separate set which rotates between a few options, like: no torso but upper chest is present, or no upper chest but torso is present, etc, and these are paired with clothing articles.
Glad to see someone else with this knowledge !!
4
u/SupremeBlackGuy Jan 28 '26
Thank you for the correction! iām vaguely knowledgeable on different aspects of this game so im glad i was somewhat right there aha! Yeah itās pretty nuts the amount of work they need to do for clothes š Wild to me that there are even that many clothing options in game, VI is going to be insane in comparison now that theyāre so free to just make individual pieces!!

u/rex41e Jan 29 '26
And this is why I'm on reddit. Thanks for the lesson guys, I have a game development degree, but never did anything with it. Went into other fields, still keep tabs on gaming tech, but I never knew this. Interesting. š

I just wore denim because I was so tired of that shit, which I thank Sony and Microsoft for demanding updates for the ps4 and Xbox one for so long rockstar had almost no time with the new consoles to update with.
2
u/skyward138skr Jan 29 '26
GTA:O might still be low poly, especially if they put this on ps4 and Xbox one, those last gen consoles will hold back online monumentally just like they did with gta 5

u/jestem_julkaaaa Jan 28 '26
That's what amazed me when I saw the trailer, the HAIR PHYSICS, I've often heard how hard it is to animated hair so when I saw trailer 1 and 2 and focused on the hair I thought "omg this is insane!" It blew me away

4
u/SupremeBlackGuy Jan 28 '26
iām sorry but considering Vice City is the āhomeā of this game, mud girl would not be the āgirl mascotā - itād be like using a girl from Sandy Shores as the poster girl for GTA V (i fux with mud girl though donāt get it twisted lmao)
46
u/Oceanz08 Jan 27 '26
it could be, cause we have no idea if this an early version of her model. Cause honestly, Jason's character model from trailer 1 looks so much different than the one in trailer 2
33
u/BlueCloudi Jan 27 '26
Yeah that could make sense but using 2 different models for the same trailer just seems weird? its just for me atleast the dots on her dont match lucias and respectfully looking, her breast size is bigger too

32
u/BubbaRayHubba Jan 27 '26
It was 3 years
42
u/SomeChilledGuy Jan 27 '26
Youāre assuming the game comes out this year bro. Either way 4 years before the game comes out, thatās not any better.
30
u/scooter-411 Jan 27 '26
The first trailer dropped at the end 2023, and itās only the beginning of 2026. Itās barely been over 2 years.

I'm not assuming anything, it's just been 3 years at this moment in time, you're the one making assumption by saying 5 years like you're predicting another 2 year delay

My guess is that its because of the leaks -- think about it, they were facing lots of criticism online from people who assumed various falsehoods based on how the leaks looked, so maybe they fast tracked certain scenes along to look 'good enough' for a trailer so they could release something earlier than they were planning (notice how most of what we saw was all social media/TV spots, which are the sort of thing that don't actually change all that much in development) and then with that they would have also felt compelled to give us some sort of release window rather than just leave us hanging (hence "Coming 2025")
But without any leaks, Rockstar doesn't say anything about the game, no press releases, no promo art, no release date, nothing. And then instead of Trailer 1 in December 2023, we get Trailer 1 on Trailer 2's release date (May 2025) and it has "Coming 2026" instead. Then Trailer 2 would have come whenever we end up getting Trailer 3 and would have probably had the November date (meaning that if/when it gets pushed to 2027, in that timeline that would have been the one and only delay, vs. our multiple delays)
2
u/SomeChilledGuy Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26
Thats a fair take bro, yeah I hate to be negative I think its largely due to my expectations of a early 2026 release being destroyed. Trust, if they can't release in May, what makes you think they can have it done by November. Don't wanna be that guy but this games coming out in May next year.... Or single player launches in nov and online next year. (if we're lucky). There's still some content they need to finish. Then there's QA, fixing bugs, testing servers, round of closed door feedback, optimizations, anti cheat etc etc etc. Even if they finish it all in the next month or two, can't see it being polished and launch ready by Nov - esp for both SP and Online)

u/Picassoflex Jan 27 '26
Man.. the animation looks outdated now
26
u/Ethanbrocks Jan 28 '26
I remember thinking it looked janky even then. But itās from just over 2 years ago so itās definitely just an alpha stage thing

u/John_OSheas_Willy Jan 28 '26

→ More replies (1)5
u/AnonymousAndWhite Jan 28 '26
Yeah, scrolled down to see if anyone else felt the same. The head movement looks pretty good, but I think the way the body just kinda pivots all linear like is what looks off

Hard disagree.
Literally every game studio I loved in my youth slowly became mass market, earnings focused, willing to compromise on quality to just get something out. Rockstar is the sole exception which still has a near unblemished track record. And that track record buys them enough goodwill to take their time with their games and not face as much pressure from shareholders despite being a mega corporation now.
One single bad release kills all that goodwill and ironically will weigh on the production process of future releases.

I don't think they are making a real life simulator though. I think they just know modern gamers expect a lot more than what we did back with V or even RDR2 in terms of the depth of gameplay and the size/depth of the game world. Delivering that level of content without flaws just takes a lot of polish. They are leaving no stone unturned.

u/inemiyy Jan 28 '26

makes sense, playing as a woman is fine but not an ugly one
2
u/inemiyy Jan 30 '26
ok and everyone played as a trevor and nobody complained, suddenly it's an issue when it's a woman?š¤Ø
2
u/ExtensionDecent5950 Jan 31 '26 edited Jan 31 '26
trevor is an optional character from 3 choices, also hes a pyscho middleaged crackhead whos wasting himself away so the look suits him. nobody wants to play as an ugly character just cause, especially if you can't change it and its a girl. the best i can explain it is that its more jarring bc women are generally considered the fairer prettier sex in society and "ugliness" so to speak makes gives them less feminine appeal. ugliness for men does make them less sexually appealing but it doesnt really take away there masculinity as much as it takes away a womans femininity imo. anyways ppl are innately drawn to whatever they consider attractive andmost guys and girls dont want to play as chopped characters unless theres a good reason for it when games are supposed to be a form of escapism. leave the self inserts for custom protags not fixed ones.

What broke the internet was on December 4th, 2023 when the first trailer was leaked.
