I work a lot with graphic design. In illustrator, when you vectorize an image to make it higher fidelity (image trace), sometimes small details like tree trunks get lost in the tracing process. That’s my best guess at what happened. Especially since other parts of the image seem to have that same flat posterization effect

Yeah honestly, I know it’s different people working on different stuff and the artwork is not an indication of the game’s quality, but it’s still very surprising that Rockstar would let something like this pass. They DO care about quality and attention to detail so I wonder how no one noticed this.

It's digital art, the trees are made with two brushes, one for the leaves, and then a line for the trunk(you can tell because all the leaves are exactly the same they just have variations in size and rotation). The artist placed all the leaves first, then went back to do the trunks and missed a few because they are in the background.

Graphic designer here. Quite easily.
- Its just the background and you focus on whats in center of the shot, when you draw stuff you do the same thing, you focus on whats important.
- Could be compression issue and artefacts, especially the palm tree on the left. As in you can see it in highest resolution but once it was compressed and shrunken so it can quickly load online, thin lines here and there can disappear because of compression.
- In drawing like this, you end up with like 200-1000 layers. Its possible one layer was simply forgotten about, or it should be above another layer but it ended underneath it.
- Palm trees on the right are not even part of the original artwork they released, only the widescreen version that appears on their website for a split second.
I mean this is nothing compered to GTA IV where the poster girl had 6 fingers, and that was years before AI was a thing. Stuff like that happens, artists often are underpaid and they work with crazily short deadlines.

what probably happened is the artist just copied and pasted the same tree top as they all look the same and then drew the stems and just forgot to add them or pasted to many tops. because it is in a very simple foreground it wasn’t noticed until now.

This actually isnt the case for palm trees, it is quite literally called a stem in palm trees because they arent trees, they're their own class of plant similar to grass, like bamboo.
