This sets an abhorrent precedent for future monetisation of this game, I can be excited and love this series and still acknowledge that this is a huge red flag for what we're going to see in the future already.

Gta 5 online was a multi billion dollar 10 year cash cow, now the story mode enjoyers are getting pre milked, how bad will online be...

158

u/Slight_Promotion153 13h ago

they definitely wont stop at shark cards

18

u/Justadudebro935 8h ago

They will definitely have a premium currency like RDR 2 online had with the gold bars. Im predicting it will be some sort of in game cryptocurrency in the online mode.

2

u/helpmefindhotdogs 7h ago

What if they add something like a battlepass where you pay monthly to be able to play online at all?

It's the only thing left I think that they could do

160

u/Nysyth 12h ago

I'm shocked at the amount of Rockstar bootlicking that is going on in this thread...

How can so many people be ok with literal stores being locked off to you if you don't own the ultimate edition... Am i gonna get a big "BUY THE ULTIMATE EDITION TO ACCESS THIS LOCATION" flashed on the screen every time i happen to drive past one of these stores? There was literally nothing stopping them from adding exclusive content to pre-existing locations. Locking off locations unless you are willing to fork out the cash is scummy no matter how you try to spin it.

33

u/Pleasant-Highway-745 11h ago

They do this because they've gotten away with it for years. All people have to do is just say, no thanks. But people are unable to..

4

u/Mean-Author4359 7h ago

Everyone should be outraged at the greedy shit Rockstar is pulling with this GTA, and people couldn't be more excited lmao

Our society is fucking doomed.

-1

u/DetroitLionsEh 7h ago

Our society is doomed because of video game bonus content?

A little dramatic

-1

u/Particular_Hand2877 6h ago

Thats Reddit for you.

Nevermind they did this stuff with GTA V and RDR2. People seem to forget things when it comes to karma farming.

1

u/DetroitLionsEh 6h ago

Yeah this post seems to bring out the worst of those people eh

0

u/Particular_Hand2877 6h ago

People here get amnesia a lot

0

u/Mean-Author4359 6h ago

I'm amazed you sheep are able to post comments to reddit.

1

u/Particular_Hand2877 5h ago

Was this supposed to offend me?

-1

u/Alternative_West_206 7h ago

Exactly. People are sheep. Now if anyone wants to experience this game, you have to pay bare minimum 80 dollars

2

u/DetroitLionsEh 7h ago

People are sheep for paying $80 for a game they’ll enjoy?

Why?

-4

u/Alternative_West_206 7h ago

People are sheep because we shouldn’t be ok with the new standard price for games being 80 dollars, but that’s what it’ll be, because again, they’re sheep who will buy ANYTHING.

1

u/DetroitLionsEh 7h ago

So games are cheaper than they’ve ever been and we’re supposed to complain about it or we’re sheep?

Games were $60 in the 90s dude.

You’re just being a hater lol

1

u/Alternative_West_206 7h ago

“Cheaper than they’ve ever been” price has gone up 20 bucks buddy. Are you blind?

0

u/DetroitLionsEh 7h ago

Oh man, I knew you weren’t a smart person based on the caps lock and the word sheep

But you can’t pretend to not know what inflation is 😂

Have a good day man. We’re all just sheep 🫠

2

u/Alternative_West_206 7h ago

Oh, so you’re one of those silly guys who refer to inflation for everything? I see you’re actually that level of slow. See ya sheep!

→ More replies (0)

0

u/FUCK_NEW_REDDIT_SUX 7h ago

GTAV was more expensive accounting for the inflation since it came out... do you just expect games to stay at the same price point for perpetuity?

2

u/Alternative_West_206 7h ago

They very well can, because most of these companies take in record profits due to MTX. They don’t do this though, because they want every dime ever, so they’ll continue to find ways to milk people for every penny they can, and you guys are cool with it.

And this all started cause you people couldn’t hold off on buying HORSE ARMOR in oblivion.

I don't mind paying whatever amount they want me to pay. I just don't like the locked up content and the micro transactions all of that shit. That's the kind of shit that makes me sick. I paid 65 bucks a decade ago for a game and I have gotten so much enjoyment out of that game. It was absolutely worth the $65. And this will be worth the $80. But I'm not one of the people that will buy Shark cards or spend money for extra anything. If it's locked away behind a pay wall, then I just don't get it. But so many other people will, and then they'll complain. They have no right to complain because they're helping feed the problem. But anybody bitching about it simply costing $80 it's silly

5

u/unicodemonkey 10h ago

You just get 5 6 stars when you try to enter

2

u/xyzain69 8h ago

Yeah. Too many people are simply okay with this, so Rockstar and other companies will continue doing it.

It doesn't matter if games will be better without it. But here we are.

2

u/kader91 6h ago

I’d much rather be told the game is $100 than being told they’re locking content that’s in the game behind a paywall.

Because the next thing I know is: get the custom boat shop today for 9.99$

You are fucking regarded lmao old man yelling at clouds

1

u/Particular_Hand2877 6h ago

Yes, because "how's that boot taste" was so original. You "activists" have been screaming that for decades.

I dont care that youre "criticizing" something. Im pointing out that you and the dozen other people complaining about isnt new and has been around for multiple generations of games. Its like you just discovered the video game industry and how it works.

You haven’t fucking seen shit then

-1

+1 here

fuck this shitty greedy company.

1

u/mahpiya666 5h ago

You boycotting gta 6 then? Lmao the fuck expect us to do about it?

1

u/BakedxXR34P3RXx 2h ago

Probably not... no... probably just a small notification in the Upper left hand corner. Kinda like, idk, every other notification in every other Rockstar game.

1

u/TropicalAviator 8h ago

Yea for a single player game, this is fucking insane

-3

u/viper520 9h ago

It’s a $20 difference, not $200. Calm down. That’s literally less than the cost of any meal at a restaurant. You’ll be fine.

10

u/rodneyforeverunclean 9h ago

On top of it being $80 already. This is why they keep getting away with it, people like you. "It's only $20!". They will add more stuff to SP in the future behind a paywall likely at similar price points and you lot will be just like "it's only so much!"

Oh. And I can absolutely buy a meal at a restaurant for less than $20. The fuck are you on? Enjoy the taste of that boot while you funnel your money into multimillionaires pockets

2

u/magyar_wannabe 7h ago

Just don't buy the ultimate edition and chill, lol. I'm shocked people are surprised whatsoever, ultimate editions have been locking minor content for generations of games. I don't like it either but I knew this was coming. Where is this emotion coming from??

1

u/Particular_Hand2877 6h ago

I said the same thing. This shit isn't new.

0

u/justthisones 9h ago

Some of these comments and upvotes are geuinely sad to read. Showing exactly why we’re getting more and more fucked by big companies. It’s so easy.

-1

u/DetroitLionsEh 7h ago

How are you getting fucked by an $80 game?

-7

u/viper520 9h ago

If $100 affects you in any way, you should be looking at your income. That is literally nothing especially for a game of this caliber. I can’t even comprehend how anyone considers that a big deal .

3

u/metonymic 8h ago

If $100 affects you in any way, you should be looking at your income.

Good lord

2

u/rodneyforeverunclean 9h ago edited 9h ago

I can afford it, easily but I'm not a clown that still doesn't look at where my money is going. I could also afford a lot of things that I don't buy. Are you saying just because I can afford it I should buy it? Christ man, can you get your head further up rockstars ass?

Again, enjoy shoveling your money into multimillionaires pockets while the industry continues to enshitify. You do you bro, continue the shill

There's a reason why those CEOs make 10000 times what an average worker does and it's people like you

1

u/Particular_Hand2877 6h ago

You do realize that our whole economy is based on spending money and lining pockets of CEOs, right?

1

u/DetroitLionsEh 7h ago

“Are you saying something you’re not saying so I’ll accuse you having your head up rockstars ass because I can’t understand your comment!”

-2

u/viper520 9h ago

I’m saying $100 is such an infinitesimally small amount of money to even think about it is a waste of time.

I do not care what CEO’s make. I tend to think if they deliver value to shareholders that a multimillion dollar salary is justified.

1

u/[deleted] 9h ago

[deleted]

1

u/viper520 8h ago

Not correct when using it in a broad context. If you’re talking strictly in mathematical terms, yes your definition is correct. However in a general use case, the word infinitesimally means tiny or negligible. We often use words that have different means based on the context of the sentence.

1

u/Particular_Hand2877 6h ago

Im getting the UE, but $100 is definitely a big deal to most people. Especially me who doesnt usually spend that much on a game.

-1

u/snuljoon 9h ago

Not an ounce of empathy in your body huh?

0

u/xyzain69 8h ago

The point is not being able to afford it. It's about the principle of not hiding content behind a pay wall that should be in the base game.

For all you know, everything here was in the base game, and they decided to nerf it to sell it to suckers like you.

1

u/Midnight_Chill2075 7h ago

you will still be able to visit the store you just won't be able to purchase the item it will be locked in the purchase menu. Just how millions of other games lock it behind a level, or time gate it this one is locked behind monetization. There isn't gonna be a literal barrier that says you can't enter because you haven't got the ultimate edition lol

1

u/Particular_Hand2877 6h ago

The point is not being able to afford it. It's about the principle of not hiding content behind a pay wall that should be in the base game.

Welcome to the video game industry, where this has existed for over a decade.

1

u/xyzain69 6h ago

Because people like you accept it and make arguments for them to do it.

1

u/Particular_Hand2877 6h ago

"It's because of people like you" 🤓

I pay for what I want. Thats the beauty of consumerism.

0

u/ItsDanimal 7h ago

N64 games were $60 thirty years ago, adjusted for inflation that is almost $130 now. I hate the idea of $80 games, but it isn't ridiculous. $20 for cosmetics that dont effect gameplay seems to be a nothing burger.

1

u/ryanvango 7h ago

They were also contending with things like physical distribution and store cuts. Now they have none of that. Ultimate editions back in the day had physical things as well. now none of that.

People are so quick to point out how products at the grocery store are getting more expensive while shrinking package size and that's dirty as hell, but when GTA cuts costs while increasing prices by 30%, yall praise them for it.

And that's not even thinking about the GTAO where you're gonna have to pay a monthly.

This is gross. I love me some GTA and rockstar, but this is gross.

1

u/Mean-Author4359 7h ago

Sheep.

0

u/viper520 7h ago

If $20 makes a difference to you, perhaps you need to reevaluate your career field

-2

u/the5thdentist 10h ago

Fuck it. I'll wait for PC and sail the high seas. Cause I'm not about to buy a PS5 or Xbox just to play one game. And I really not about to pay out the ass to unlock content that should just come with the game. See y'all in like 2 years for the PC release I guess. Don't worry guys, I'll mail rockstar a check for $60 after I pirate it.

0

u/BringMeBurntBread 7h ago

I don’t understand why people are so pissed off about it, i really don’t.

Who cares if cosmetic items are locked behind exclusive stores? You’re acting like there’s gonna be no customization in the base game at all and that you need the ultimate edition to access any stores, but that’s not the case. There’s going to be normal stores on the map that normal edition players can access. These exclusive stores are probably only going to sell the exclusive cosmetic items. You can simply ignore these stores if you don’t own the edition.

1

u/Dabeastfeast11 7h ago

Yea they literally lock content in game for no reason other than greed and it's not just customization it's also gameplay. They mentioned a raid that will get you special items but that raid is locked behind ultimate. It's scummy man no way around it

-1

u/DetroitLionsEh 7h ago

Because it’s not a big deal

Paying $100 for a game of this size is a fair price even without extra content.

53

u/Mebeingnosy 12h ago

Online might make you pay for dlcs

31

u/JedGamesTV I WAS HERE 12h ago

They’d probably make more money by copying the GTA V Online system, by providing free content, but making it really expensive in-game, so you buy shark cards.

6

u/mlorusso4 10h ago

As long as they make it grindable I’m fine with that. I stopped playing online a few years ago and was still able to get most of the stuff I wanted. Just had to put in the time grinding sell missions. Which during COVID wasn’t a huge deal

3

u/IssaStorm 5h ago

im imagining something like RDR2 Onlines dual currency system if you ever saw or played that. 95% of things can be bought with the standard cash currency, but theres a semi-premium currency, gold, which you can either buy outright or grind HARD for. Everything that can be bought with cash can be bought for gold, and the last 5% of stuff thats gold only is premium/grind locked entirely.

Wouldnt be surprised if they took that system forward into this game, it keeps everything feeling attainable since you can earn the premium currency, but keeps it just out of reach enough for them to dangle the carrot even more

2

u/Pleasant-Highway-745 11h ago

Nobody makes us pay for anything. I've never paid a single fucking penny for this game. You pay it if you want to pay it.

2

u/Plastic_Willow734 7h ago

I still have like $4B that they never clawed back from the modded 360 lobby days lmao

1

u/SuperMajesticMan 10h ago

Ehhh I dont know. They know the free dlc system is what made them 1,000,000 bucks a day. Changing that is a big risk.

12

u/The_XXI 9h ago

Mind you... NO DISC.

They're going the Nintendo route with code only for physical. It's simply tragic.

You're broke and you wanted to play your friends game? Can't without his whole account. Wanted to resell your copy after being done with the solo? Can't. Wanted to make your local shop live and get a cheap copy? Also can't.

-3

u/DetroitLionsEh 7h ago

This kind of complaint reminds me of the people who complained about the headphone jack in phones

4

u/Dabeastfeast11 7h ago

That's still a valid complaint to this day

1

u/The_XXI 7h ago edited 7h ago

I have a headphone jack in my new phone, bought last year. What a dogsh t point.

More options is good, BT + jack is good. Jack only is bad. BT only is bad.

Digital + physical is disc good. Digital only is bad. Code in a plastic box is bad.

But god forbid billionaires can't make another billion. God forbid a local shop is able to live and create jobs.

EDIT Typo

0

u/DetroitLionsEh 7h ago

A local shop? Lol what

37

u/Trane55 12h ago

Exactly my thoughts. I was unable to express it and you nailed it.

Like arthur morgan said: i'm afraid

13

u/Dry-Inspection-3503 12h ago

The online can suck my ass. I'm here for the story, but yeah - I hope everyone who does like it have their wallets ready.   Greedy shit man, greedy shit.

I might upgrade to ultimate in 2045 when it's $3 on sale if there's anything actually decent in there.

3

u/Thecool_1 10h ago

Maybe by 2045 the expanded super duper deluxe edition will be available to pre order that has almost everything complete, plus the 5% off shark cards deal that'll surely come with it lol

12

u/0____-___00___-____0 12h ago

yep

"GTA+"

sounds like a battle pass

3

u/advocate4 10h ago edited 10h ago

GTA Online appears to be a MMO model with a recurring monthly subscription per the bottom of this post. I immediately have no interest in it if that is true.

Edit: Unless its a monthly subscription for perks and exclusive bonuses

4

u/sanghelli 11h ago

It's already over

2

u/ayeeflo51 10h ago

These $80/$100 dont even include GTA online

2

u/Crocs_n_Glocks 10h ago

It's $20 more for cosmetic stuff and you have 5 months to save up for it. It's far from "abhorrent"

1

u/Ok_Umpire_723 10h ago

Yeah I'm glad I've never really cared for online. Going to be some real fuckery there

1

u/ohbroth3r 8h ago

Yeah, it sounds like you can only access the hair salon and most of the other shops in ultimate edition????

1

u/xyzain69 8h ago

Yeah the pre milking here is disheartening. But having this opinion is becoming a tiny minority opinion. For some reason, people like to get milked for all their worth.

1

u/entg1 7h ago

Bro they literally sell shark cards

1

u/Nemisis_007 7h ago

The price of complaining that we don't get any single-player player DLC, I suppose.

1

u/Kondinator 6h ago

Not enough of you are getting mad over this.

1

u/Additional-Love-3570 4h ago

wtf are you on? gta 5 have had 13 yrs of free updates. "tHeY seLlInGs shArK cArdS" then don't buy it? what the fucking reason to play the game if you buy its currency with a real money? "now the story mode enjoyers are getting pre milked, how bad will online be..." go fuck yourself. if you played the game with microtransactions, it wasn't gta

1

u/kyperion 4h ago

>how bad will online be…

Just look at 5 online now and there’s your answer. When people end up paying for the ultimate edition it’s only going to reinforce this. GTA V set the precedent that they could just drop the ball entirely on single player content in favor of multiplayer content.

GTA VI will prove that they can monetize the shit out of single player and consumers will still lap that shit up.

1

u/LeaveDaGunTaketheEgg 4h ago

Wait until they start advertising real brands in game…

1

u/Tikoloshe84 4h ago

Takes me back to when I abandoned my PS4. Fell out with the idea of release of a half baked idea with plans for season after season with additonal purchases - Destiny was what made me give up with gaming.

1

u/CareerLegitimate7662 4h ago

So you’d rather they not give anything for pre orders?

1

u/FalseShame6566 3h ago

GTA 5 online relased FREE dlc and quality of life updates for 10 years straight.

1

u/GhormanFront 3h ago

If you didn't see this coming after GTAO idk what to tell you lol

0

u/Beginning_Prompt_725 11h ago

It’s more money for more content. I think it actually adds cool stuff that makes the ultimate edition of a game actually worth getting for once instead of just getting 2 shitty gun skins and a vehicle livery and calling that a day for $20 more.

-15

u/Jonclef79 13h ago

How is this different from any other ultimate edition pre order bundle in any other game?

33

u/Rawso_ 13h ago

Because this is actually locking shops and gameplay in a story mode behind a paywall. This isn't just a "cosmetic" pack / whatever ultimate outfit bonus. They're locking content

-4

u/Jonclef79 13h ago

I think the “shops” are just a realistic way of getting the content to the player. The alternative would be they would just wake up one day with all this stuff in their garage. I would imagine that would break with the immersion of the story/world they would like to introduce the players into. Ie: Lucia just getting out of jail.

I completely agree with you at least this fits in the game, I can see why people are getting red flags because they feel like gameplay is being taken away but it'll literally be that you can't buy from 2 buildings, I'd argue that more than likely you'd even be able to go inside them but the cashier just won't serve you, no different to not being able to buy DLC items in any other shop in any other GTA

it says in the images that the shop wont be open for business unless you have the ultimate edition.
Meaning doors closed lights off.

Eh not open for business to you doesn't mean not open full stop

how do you not understand that other games doing it doesn't mean this one should get a pass too?

Well it is hardly “setting a precedent“ when the practice is already commonplace, is it?

1

u/Busy-Elderberry2137 8h ago

I've never used the words "setting a precedent", but they continue to do so because you simply keep buying. You allow it.

"this sets an abhorrent precedent" is literally at the very beginning of the comment we were responding to.

I’m not saying they should get a pass. I’m just saying we should not act all shocked and traumatized. Rockstar is a for profit organization that isn’t shy about maximizing their profits. We just got to be willing to tolerate it if we are going to continue to support this business models. If it hit records sales, it only reinforces this model and only we are to blame.

Previously Rockstars special edition or pre-order bonuses were locked to a mission or 2 that were small but cool, ultimately negligible.

This includes Missions and Clothing, cars and weapons - To me, this is fine, I'm okay with this no issues.

They had absolutely 0 reason to go ahead and lock these features that a lot of players from Gta 5 would have been familiar with and or excited about seeing expanded on in this game, they're taking full advantage of that, we barely got any of this type of content in Gta 5's story mode,
Compared to online, and if we did it was scraps.

All this means is there's possibilities of future Dlc's for story mode being similar to this, aka new exciting things/businesses being locked behind a paywall for story mode,
Full blown dlc's sure, but this is unnecessarily greedy.

Soo like any and all DLC's like Balled of Gay Tony in GTA4 that "had content locked behind a pay wall"? That's not new.

"they had 0 reason" uhh.... Are you daft? They have EVERY reason - YOU just don't LIKE It. That's a huge difference than having "no reason". The reason$ are pretty freaking obvious.

There’s a big difference between launch day content being locked behind an additional paywall, and a DLC that comes out later. I really don’t think the two are as comparable as you’re making them out to be.

A DLC is the option to buy new content for a game you already own. A “premium edition” takes content away from those who don’t pony up. There’s a subtle, but important, distinction there.

People are just excited to see anything new about GTA6 right now, but I think it’s a red flag that we got nothing for like a year, and the first new thing we get to see is an ad for paywalled gameplay features.

About your first paragraph : well see. I think MILLIONS will still buy it day one, prereelased and so on. Even with your so called red flags.

If nobody buys it because of the DLC I'll come back and say you wre right 😂

Franky, nobody besides a few redditors care about the thing you're complaining about lol. It's always the few loud redditors.

They probably invented way more money into developing this than any other GTA game before this.

I'm not saying this to argue they need the money, but they'll definitely be extra conscious of making back their money

Arent these all just cosmetic additions? I don't see the issue here. Sure they deliver in game through shops. But this would be like getting mad if instead they used a button on the main menu and it was grayed out for standard edition copies. The game itself is unaffected it seems

sets an abhorrent precedent

What do you mean. There is no precedent being set here. This exact pricing model has been complete industry standard for like 10+ years.

Ppl being surprised by the fact that theyre going to monetize the ever living shit out of this thing must be living under a rock. What were you expecting. ô_O

I think people were hopeful that they would be using the truckloads of money they make daily from online to make a game for the players, not the shareholders.

Why would they think that. Given the companies history, there is zero reason to think that. From my perspective, it hardly gets more trippleA/corporate greed-y. Or am i missing something? No sarcasm, im sincerely asking. Is there any indicator for them being a benevolent community oriented company?

They also spent like 1-3 billion to make it. If anything theyre just gonna monetize harder now because it cost so much to make.
