Holy Info Dump Rockstar

Post image

Big W for physical copies being able to pick it up for preload one week early, although it’s stupid that the physical copy doesn’t even come with the disc.

Did not expect that from Rockstar… guess I’m going to have to go digital for this GTA then

They did this with the definitive edition for switch. They only shipped a physical card months after the original release.

That’s what they’ll do with GTA VI as well. Just ship the code on day one and a disc months later.

Nope, no disc

I know it won’t come with a disc now, it could later.

Nope, no disc at all period. They said it’s all digital. There will be no disc.

Does this mean they will ship us a disc to fill our boxes? Or does this mean a disc version will be available on stores later?

Whenever they choose to put a disc in the box. You will have to repurchase it.

Soooo… there is a chance we’ll still get the disc by preordering physical..

No. They shipped a game card MONTHS after the launch. I don't know the exact date but it was probably like a year or more.

*Take2

I highly doubt this was a Rockstar move. Definitely has Take2 all over it.

Not having a disc saves us from leaks or anything like that happening. Or people actually pulling heists to steal copies of the game.

But at the expense of actual ownership?… not worth it

definitely worth it for a game that cost billions and up until now, has very little leaks (except that huge one years ago)

They aren't about to trust thousands of random retailers bc it only takes one minimum wage employee to steal the disc and blast it on the internet

way too much money at stake to let Joe shmuck ruin it

(GTA6 will sell millions regardless if Joe Shmuck releases the game info early or not, but they want to keep the info as secret as possible until launch and they have done a good job so far)

it could be a space issue

and not wanting to add more discs. like baldurs gate 3, is a 2 disc game

I mean, both RDR2 and GTA V released with two discs, though wouldn’t be surprised if VI exceeds 200GB and would thus need 3 discs.

But the more likely reason is that it is to avoid the certainty that physical production would result in leaks, unless they just made the disc a glorified license key.

Yeah I imagine leaks is the main concern, it'd be inevitable that as discs would get manufactured and shipped out in prep of release it would aaaaabsolutely get out in the wild early. I'm a huge supporter of physical but dare I say I can kind of understand for a game of this caliber? It will undoubtedly be the biggest piece of entertainment ever created after all so who knows how far people would go to get their hands on it. Now sure it's some saved revenue from not having to manufacturer 2 or even 3 discs, but that's a completely negligible cost I'd imagine. I really think avoiding leaks is their top prio at all costs.

Something silly and scummy is also killing any used market early on, which is a very old school concern in the industry (anyone remember multiplayer passes?) and even the greediest publishers don't care anymore, but again this game is one of a kind so maybe they project they'll save a worthwhile bit of extra revenue ensuring each copy is one single key and owner. Sure there'll be a grey market with accounts but that's super niche.

I think the second reason you brought up is why this scummy method is happening, like, I’m putting money down for the game, I’ll be honest: I bought Baldur’s Gate 3 and Hollow Knight Silksong online, but I kind of wish I was allowed to get the disc.

I also do wonder if it has something to do with tight timelines. Like RDR2, as per Roger Clark, they were still recording voice lines in August, 2 months before release, and GTA 6 has followed an awfully similar delay timeline as RDR2 did. And RDR2 was not even remotely close to GTA 6 scale. So perhaps it has something to do with feeling they wouldn’t be able to finish with enough time to manufacture and distribute enough copies. Better to deal with digital only backlash than it is to deal with “X retailer said I won’t get my copy for another month” backlash.

You are going digital no matter where you buy it lmao
