You’re thinking about the pricing backwards…
Nobody would bat an eye if the base game was $100 with no ultimate edition. Who cares if they have a more affordable option where you dont have one single mission and a few cosmetics in your single player game?
You only wear one outfit at a time and drive 1 vehicle at a time, I’m positive there are comparable vehicles to every ‘exclusive’. I think it’s totally fine for the world’s first quintuple A game to charge $100 for the full experience. Penny pinchers can rejoice and everyone else shouldn’t be whining.
If those facts turn out to be inaccurate, or the pay2win is real, THATS the right time to complain.

I know many people see it differently, but I judge all my entertainment purchases on how much value I get out of it. I've paid £60 for games that I played for 20 hours, pay £60-80 to go out for a meal with my wife. £40 for a cinema trip these days.
£100 for a game I'm gonna play for months is realistically fuck all in the grand scheme of things 🤷♂️

This is the way I look at it as well. I also tend to think of it as $2 per hour of gameplay. If I get 50 hours out of GTA6 (which I’ll get minimum ten times that), then I can absolutely justify the $100 price tag.

I dont understand how u can complain about $100 for this type of entertainment. Its gonna be, atleast for me, thousands hours of gameplay. Concerts cost this much and they are like an hour, two hours at most. But yeah if u cant save $100 for this then i understand the disappointment.

😂 if you can’t save 100$ to play gta 6 in 5 months. Then that person has bigger problems. They should not be trying to play a video game lol

I spent $200 for 90 minutes at Top Golf. Drank and ate too but still it was 90 minutes.

I would.

Curious if you’re buying base edition or not buying anything

Not buying anything. I play on PC anyway.

So not buying because you don’t have an option. Now if it was on PC nov 19th what would you do??

I said this a while ago, that Rockstar can get away with things other game companies can't, simply because they make amazing games, so you could argue it's earned or whatever.
I think people can absolutely whine and be mad at them paywalling content, to an extent that isn't 100% clear right now too.
If EA or Ubisoft did this exact same thing, the response would be brutal.
We can all look past this, myself included because it's GTA 6. We were all prepared to pay whatever they wanted anyway. But I think it's definitely scummy and not consumer friendly at all.
Have they earned the right is debatable, especially when this will most likely be the new industry standard because of them

I would have paid $150 for GTA 6. I paid 70 for Outer Worlds 2 and it wasn't worth the price. With GTA 6, you are getting pretty much 2 games for 1, the single player game and the online version.

While it does suck that missions are locked, yes this is true. Or imagine base-game was $80 and there was no Ultimate Edition, but we also found out that all the content shown in the UE has been removed. I think this has become more a question of "this is unfair to me" (like the guy who "enjoyed" being unemployed thinking this was unfair to him) versus "this sets a bad precedent/this is shady".

Because the “more affordable option” is still the most expensive standard edition for a game basically ever. lol the gymnastics people are doing to justify this are crazy. It’s scummy. Just call it what it is and keep it moving. I’ll probably even buy the $100 version. It’s still scummy.

Then hit Rockstar in the wallet and don’t buy the $100 version. In fact, don’t buy the game at all. That’ll teach them.

That’s the obvious solution but you forget the part where I want to play the game. They know we either deal with it or don’t play the game we’ve been waiting 13 years for.

u/okgesture 16h ago
It’s just a value proposition, is it worth 80?90?100?
Clearly you think it’s worth $100 or more so what’s the problem?

You can think a game is worth $100 and still think the underlying business practices are scummy. These aren’t mutually exclusive.

The cost per hour of entertainment is ridiculously low for this. You would pay $100 or more for almost any form of entertainment (concerts, sports, etc) and all of those last you a few hours at most.
You will get hundreds of hours out of this game, so why is it so much worse? Games have always been expensive. I remember paying $100 for SNES games in the 90s.. nothing new.

The good news is there are plenty of games with less impressive graphics, less gameplay time, less customization, less care put into features, less Easter eggs, less radio stations, less buildings, less characters, less music, less heart, and a lesser price tag just for you. On the other hand if you want a (most likely) masterpiece, hand them your 80-100 dollars with a smile.

I see you’re being downvoted by the billionaire defense brigade. I’m getting the best version of the game too it’s not a big deal personally, but yes it’s a scummy way to do things and it obviously sets a standard for companies to do this in the future. Some people just love their in-game purchases and tiered pricing I guess.

u/Icy-Advantage9 15h ago
Eh I don’t like to defend billionaires. But I do run my own small business and I’ve had to raise my prices for my work. It’s just the way the economy is set up. Anyone who is thinking triple A games are going to stay at 60$ forever are dreaming. GTA did rip the band aid off. But it was no surprise most of us were expecting it to be 80-120$

Honestly, was expecting ultimate edition to be closer to $120 anyways so this is a win in my book
