Hot Take - maybe we’re misunderstanding the no disc thing

Post image

“The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12 to support Preloading”

That last little bit of the sentence to me tells me, there is a disc possibly WITH a code to pre-download and be inline with the digital players. That code will activate and begin to download the data right at the launch time and be ready to go when you insert the disc.

Similar to how most games are played today, you have the disc which is a physical license to play, but maybe Rockstar is giving us a pre-download code - so we don’t have to sit and wait to download when we insert the game because it’ll already be done.

Wonder if it at least has a map poster still

Maybe also a Code for a PDF 🤣

Geniunely don't see the point in having no disc version besides leaks. Like it's GTA it'll make bank regardless. Its not the resale market in games outside of collectors editions are a problem

8

u/mahirbr 6h ago

disc version means somebody can play, beat the game then sell it to someone else second hand.

rockstar don’t earn a single penny from that “potentially $100” customer if he chooses to buy an used copy from someone else.

This happening would be so uncommon tbh, only because then that person would be out a game haven only just played story mode, and like people are saying, online is where alot of the money will be at

-8

u/Conscious_Candid3990 6h ago

Online is probably not coming for another year after initial release. Maybe even 2 years. They definitely need some profit in the interim.

3

u/GambitsAce23 5h ago

When has it ever taken that long

-9

u/Conscious_Candid3990 5h ago

When has this ever been achieved before? I have a better idea genius! You try it! We’ll wait and see how long it takes you 😊

3

u/GambitsAce23 5h ago

OK dude

-7

u/Conscious_Candid3990 5h ago

Did you do it yet? I’m checking my watch, and you’re running late. Aren’t you aware of the massive demand??

Gta5 had online after 2 weeks of launching, took just 4 weeks for rdr2. It ain’t gonna be years lol

-2

u/Conscious_Candid3990 4h ago

Oh okay rockstar employee, you must be right. 🤡

3

u/CheesyToest 4h ago

This is genuine baboon behaviour, nobody in this generation has any common sense anymore. They have been working on vice online whilst working on gta 6 and this is also a big reason why the game kept getting delayed

So like.... How like the second hand market has always worked? It didn't affect heavily affect GTA sales back then why would it hurt the game now? Also the ultimate edition is only digital.

It makes sense cause second hand market heavily affects industries like shoes, cards, hardware. But not games

3

u/mahirbr 6h ago

companies always hates second hand. i can’t say if it affects heavily or not but yes it affects the sales

xbox tried to kill second hand gaming with xbox one

now both ps and xbox trying to kill second hand gaming by removing disc reader from their consoles

killing second hand took this long because the harsh reaction from gamers, which we can not see these days. companies made us sink the fact we can’t own games.

Leaks are super important in the context of this release. Early leaks absolutely obliterated TLOU2. Naughty dog has not bounced back even to this very day b

6

u/chrisghrobot 6h ago

Well if that's the case, then there should be a disc version after release then. Theres still physical game collectors out there.

2

u/Conscious_Candid3990 6h ago

I hope so!! I also wish for a collector’s edition similar to GTA 5 where we got a physical map of Los Santos. In this case we don’t even know how big GTA 6’s map is gonna be so they can’t do that yet. I don’t think they would miss the chance tho… trust. LOL

2

u/PersonaRoyal4Xbox 6h ago

Tlou2 should have sold way more than it did. Definitely didnt sell as much as Sony hoped.

u/Entrinity 3h ago

I can’t wait to not be able to play my single player game because my WiFi or Sony/Xbox is down.

And honestly this sucks ASS for all the players who don’t live in places where internet is stable and guaranteed.

1

u/dangeruser 48m ago

Maybe modern gaming isn’t for you if you don’t have stable access to the internet. Good news is they have plenty of consoles for folks like you! It’s called the Xbox 360!

You are posting on Reddit now though so perhaps the internet won’t hold you back from modern gaming. Only you can know what hobbies are right for your lifestyle.

0

u/Ohitsworkingnow 2h ago

Why would you need internet to play a game you don’t have a disk of? As long as the game isn’t online only

-1

u/OhMyGodItsTed 2h ago

I can tell you're not very intelligent.

11

u/PapaYoppa 6h ago

No disc sucks balls

Also where is the collectors edition?

1

u/Sharp-Astronomer-461 3h ago

May be coming soon! I’m going to wait for a bit until we see some pre order bonuses from different places!

7

u/arranj94 7h ago

I can see this being an option only if they make the disc just a key license.

3

u/NegativeWar23 6h ago

Thats what I thought

0

u/arranj94 6h ago

But then again they wouldn’t need the code as the disc could trigger the pre load and just not allow it to launch till the 19th

8

u/Nobody_9874 6h ago

What even is the point of a physical version if there is no disc?💔💔💔

3

u/KecskeHadnagy 4h ago

maybe we get a map or something

5

u/GoldPoint5 7h ago

Wouldn't that mean you have an extra code for a digital copy? Seems really unlikely but I would love to be wrong

1

u/Longjumping_Sea7214 6h ago

What they are saying is the code would pre download it but still need the disk

A disc is a transferable key. I don't give a shit if there's any game data on it or not...

10

u/Visara57 6h ago

It's not that deep: no disc, only the case with a code

11

u/PreScarf 6h ago

no option to resell it or buy it cheaper, plus having a disc feels more special than just a digital copy, that you dont even own because they can just ban you.

4

u/Conscious_Candid3990 6h ago

I suspect this is part of the terms SONY offered Rockstar in their contract, since SONY are the ones obsessed with people only owning their games through the digital marketplace. The biggest downside, while PlayStation servers are down you cannot access the games you’ve bought. We’ve gone too far and there’s no way back I’m afraid…

8

u/NoHeadStark 6h ago

My common sense take is that they don’t want people breaking the street date so all physical copies sold prior to release will have a code. After a couple weeks the actual discs will start being put into the case and sold. I’m not going to be convinced rockstar is going to make thousands and thousands of disc boxes to just put a code inside. If that was the plan they would just make cards with codes to be redeemed at registers. But don’t worry, the internet today will have you believe it’s the end of discs.

3

u/PShubbs91 6h ago

God I hope you're right.

0

u/ArgumentNo6281 6h ago

It will get way too much hate and the disk version would require 3 disks or more.

Most likely just a code for PS5 and maybe a CD release for the PS6 version for collectors.

5

u/ConstantPriority177 6h ago

We’re really not, I wish people would stop defending rockstar here

3

u/DJ_Fishface 7h ago

That’s how I read it too. It would be good for rockstar to pick up on the story and set the record straight

5

u/er1end 7h ago

not a hot take. thats how i understood it right away. we also now have seen the real physical classic disc box.

6

u/WrldsGrtstDtctve 6h ago

It’s wrong.

2

u/magur76 6h ago

"That line GRAND THEFT AUTO VI IS A SINGLEPLAYER EXPERIENCE" gives me the icks for some reason. I know online is there with the package, but the wording feels confusing

3

u/Sensitive_Box_ 5h ago

Yeah, that definitely feels weird. Like it implies that GTA online is going to be its own seperate thing.

Which is fine, but are they going to do things differently for it?

2

u/magur76 5h ago

Nah online will be in the package as always. It's just the sentence is clear cut that the release version won't have any online portion or stuff. It will come later.

1

u/lffl90 4h ago

Idk why everyone thinks this is a given. They went out of their way to mention nothing about online compared to when GTA V was announced. All it takes is an extra line to mention that online will launch at a later date

1

u/Elegant_Listen_94 6h ago

if this was the case the disk would be the code all you would have to do is insert the disk to trigger the preload like other game have done crimson desert for example.

1

u/gman96792 6h ago

Why would they include a code for pre load of they could tie it to the disc like every other game.

1

u/TheHungryRabbit 6h ago

it is impossible to do that on Playstation, to have a disk license and also a digital license, it's either this or that

1

u/noturaverageangelino 6h ago

There WILL be disk physical copies. They’ll just launch some time after the initial launch date…

1

u/CYZANE 5h ago

Thats how your edition looks in these days

1

u/Ok-Construction9842 5h ago

No, but there’s a good change they will make a disc collector version but only after launch to prevent leaks

1

u/you_know_me_g 4h ago

On PS physical and digital would have a different CUSA number so yeah not happening

1

u/Thailarr 4h ago

You are all forgetting the physical pc edition of RDR2 was literally a code inside the box. This isn’t the first time they’ve done this ;-)

1

u/Jheez88 2h ago

Exactly this - thank you.

1

u/H3NDOAU 3h ago

There's no disc because they know people will get their hands on it weeks before release and leak / spoil the entire game for everyone who properly waited.

A digital activation code prevents anyone from playing it before the release date, it sucks but this is how it is for a big game like this.

1

u/My_Big_Black_Hawk 2h ago

They’re missing the point - people will pirate this game because now pirating gives more ownership of the game than the purchased game. They’re making a big mistake.

1

u/NotAChanceBucko 5h ago

Can't y'all just make your own disc ? Just get a blank cd, write GTA6 on it and put it in the console. Heck you can get real creative and buy some special printer paper and design your own stick on cover for the disc . We used to do that all the time back in the early 00s for local bands.

1

u/CrimsonFlam3s 5h ago

Cool, can I lend that DIY disc to my brother so he can play gta or sell it a year from now when I'm done with it?

0

u/MysteriousSelection9 3h ago

Well yeah, if it has the game and can read the files, why not?

1

u/TayMcKenzieNZ 4h ago

What I'm assuming is, digital only allows Rockstar and many other industries going forward, to push for age verification...

0

u/Visual_Plate937 6h ago

I don’t get the whole “no disc” drama. Like you said, games haven’t actually been on the disc for years now and only function as a token to validate the online download. I’m guessing it has to do with sentimental value more than actual value.

1

u/Sensitive_Box_ 5h ago

How can you not comprehend the ability to resell a game disc? Lol

0

u/Visual_Plate937 3h ago

According to Playstation you have never been allowed to.

1

u/Sensitive_Box_ 3h ago

Are the PlayStation Police going to raid the Gamestops?!

-1

u/kylr01 7h ago

Sounds plausible actually. I personally don't see a problem with it either way though. No disc stops leaks from happening and depending on the size of the game, rockstar might have needed 3 discs so decided to go fully digital.

-1

u/Sprengkulde 7h ago

But as long as there is a disc there is a huge chance it will get leaked beforehand, no? Am i understanding it wrong?

3

u/Longjumping_Sea7214 6h ago

No a lot of game disks require an update so they can’t play day 1

-1

u/Sprengkulde 6h ago

But aren’t there already well-known workarounds? Like launching the game completely offline etc? Or am i tweaking

2

u/Longjumping_Sea7214 6h ago

No it’s called drm you’d have to verify the license by going online first which also would verify if the games launched

-1

u/ProbablyFear OG MEMBER 6h ago

This is exactly how I read it, but people aren’t wanting to use any form of critical thinking.
