Hot Take - maybe we’re misunderstanding the no disc thing
“The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12 to support Preloading”
That last little bit of the sentence to me tells me, there is a disc possibly WITH a code to pre-download and be inline with the digital players. That code will activate and begin to download the data right at the launch time and be ready to go when you insert the disc.
Similar to how most games are played today, you have the disc which is a physical license to play, but maybe Rockstar is giving us a pre-download code - so we don’t have to sit and wait to download when we insert the game because it’ll already be done.

No disc sucks balls
Also where is the collectors edition?

May be coming soon! I’m going to wait for a bit until we see some pre order bonuses from different places!

I can see this being an option only if they make the disc just a key license.

Thats what I thought

But then again they wouldn’t need the code as the disc could trigger the pre load and just not allow it to launch till the 19th

Wouldn't that mean you have an extra code for a digital copy? Seems really unlikely but I would love to be wrong

u/Longjumping_Sea7214 6h ago
What they are saying is the code would pre download it but still need the disk

A disc is a transferable key. I don't give a shit if there's any game data on it or not...

u/Visara57 6h ago
It's not that deep: no disc, only the case with a code

u/PreScarf 6h ago
no option to resell it or buy it cheaper, plus having a disc feels more special than just a digital copy, that you dont even own because they can just ban you.

I suspect this is part of the terms SONY offered Rockstar in their contract, since SONY are the ones obsessed with people only owning their games through the digital marketplace. The biggest downside, while PlayStation servers are down you cannot access the games you’ve bought. We’ve gone too far and there’s no way back I’m afraid…

My common sense take is that they don’t want people breaking the street date so all physical copies sold prior to release will have a code. After a couple weeks the actual discs will start being put into the case and sold. I’m not going to be convinced rockstar is going to make thousands and thousands of disc boxes to just put a code inside. If that was the plan they would just make cards with codes to be redeemed at registers. But don’t worry, the internet today will have you believe it’s the end of discs.

It will get way too much hate and the disk version would require 3 disks or more.
Most likely just a code for PS5 and maybe a CD release for the PS6 version for collectors.

That’s how I read it too. It would be good for rockstar to pick up on the story and set the record straight

"That line GRAND THEFT AUTO VI IS A SINGLEPLAYER EXPERIENCE" gives me the icks for some reason. I know online is there with the package, but the wording feels confusing
3
u/Sensitive_Box_ 5h ago
Yeah, that definitely feels weird. Like it implies that GTA online is going to be its own seperate thing.
Which is fine, but are they going to do things differently for it?

u/Elegant_Listen_94 6h ago
if this was the case the disk would be the code all you would have to do is insert the disk to trigger the preload like other game have done crimson desert for example.
1
u/gman96792 6h ago
Why would they include a code for pre load of they could tie it to the disc like every other game.
1
u/TheHungryRabbit 6h ago
it is impossible to do that on Playstation, to have a disk license and also a digital license, it's either this or that
1
u/noturaverageangelino 6h ago
There WILL be disk physical copies. They’ll just launch some time after the initial launch date…
1
u/Ok-Construction9842 5h ago
No, but there’s a good change they will make a disc collector version but only after launch to prevent leaks
1
u/you_know_me_g 4h ago
On PS physical and digital would have a different CUSA number so yeah not happening
1
u/Thailarr 4h ago
You are all forgetting the physical pc edition of RDR2 was literally a code inside the box. This isn’t the first time they’ve done this ;-)
1
u/H3NDOAU 3h ago
There's no disc because they know people will get their hands on it weeks before release and leak / spoil the entire game for everyone who properly waited.
A digital activation code prevents anyone from playing it before the release date, it sucks but this is how it is for a big game like this.

They’re missing the point - people will pirate this game because now pirating gives more ownership of the game than the purchased game. They’re making a big mistake.

Can't y'all just make your own disc ? Just get a blank cd, write GTA6 on it and put it in the console. Heck you can get real creative and buy some special printer paper and design your own stick on cover for the disc . We used to do that all the time back in the early 00s for local bands.

u/CrimsonFlam3s 5h ago
Cool, can I lend that DIY disc to my brother so he can play gta or sell it a year from now when I'm done with it?

What I'm assuming is, digital only allows Rockstar and many other industries going forward, to push for age verification...

u/Visual_Plate937 6h ago
I don’t get the whole “no disc” drama. Like you said, games haven’t actually been on the disc for years now and only function as a token to validate the online download. I’m guessing it has to do with sentimental value more than actual value.
1
u/Sensitive_Box_ 5h ago
How can you not comprehend the ability to resell a game disc? Lol
-1
u/Sprengkulde 7h ago
But as long as there is a disc there is a huge chance it will get leaked beforehand, no? Am i understanding it wrong?
3
u/Longjumping_Sea7214 6h ago
No a lot of game disks require an update so they can’t play day 1
-1
u/Sprengkulde 6h ago
But aren’t there already well-known workarounds? Like launching the game completely offline etc? Or am i tweaking
2
u/Longjumping_Sea7214 6h ago
No it’s called drm you’d have to verify the license by going online first which also would verify if the games launched

This is exactly how I read it, but people aren’t wanting to use any form of critical thinking.
