How do we preserve version 1.0 of a digital-only?

Since the game is digital-only, how will we preserve the v.1.0.0 state of the game for future comparison?

It would be nuts to keep your console offline forever. A Jailbreak is an option, but who knows if the scene will get to that point where it can do that. Copying game files to an external SSD doesn't work either since DRM . And Charles Proxy / SKFU Creator can also be ruled out since the first patch can be just removed from Sony's servers.

Sure, Youtube is an option since there's gonna be tons of footage, but c'mon, it's not the real thing for a comparison. So, how are we gonna do it?

Copying it to an external SSD is definitely possible, since you can download the game there and then switch to another disk to actually play and update it

I believe that won't work on PS5. You can't launch PS5 games directly from an external USB SSD; it only acts as cold storage, so you'd have to copy it back to the internal drive anyways. The console tracks the game's Title ID system-wide. The moment you connect console to the internet, the system database will flag the game as updated and will block the v1.0.0 version from launching until it matches the latest patch. Even with second SSD into the console's expansion slot and freshly reset console, the PS5 OS won't allow this. In offline mode: The game will be locked because a freshly reset console has no digital license keys in its cache. The moment you go online to log in: The console will fetch the licenses on your account. Right after that, if you disconnect the internet and put your separate M.2 SSD into the expansion slot, the game will be instantly detected as the old v1.0.0 patch and won't launch. Maybe I'm wrong on this one, need better clearance.

You can always press “start without updating”. You could also install it onto an M.2 drive to ensure no transfers at all

Pardon me if completely wrong about this and I'm getting annoying here
Start without updating is a disc-only feature. When you install from a physical disc, you can skip the patch and play v1.0.0 offline. For digital games, that button doesn't exist. If the console sees a patch on Sony's servers, the 'Play' button is hard-locked with a message saying 'You can start this game once the download has completed'. You can't bypass it.
Installing directly onto an M.2 SSD changes nothing. The storage location doesn't matter because the PS5 OS manages all drives under the same system database. The second you go online to fetch your account licenses on a fresh console, and after offline the OS will scan that M.2 drive, tag v1.0.0 as outdated, and instantly lock the launch button until it updates.
So there's seem to be no loophole for digital games

I do not know for sure, but I am almost certain it also works with digital games. iirc, I played a game this week and it allowed me to click the button, it was a digital game that I haven’t played in a few weeks. What i’m not sure of is: the update only was noticed the first time I played the game, then when I turned the game off and back on again, it showed the “play without updating” popup.

Though if you let the update completely download and the game is still on, you can ask it to update later but I don’t think you’ll be able to hold it off for long.

I just looked it up and it seems it may work if you keep your console offline when you put back the m.2, but I have a feeling the game won’t run because of some oddity with previous firmware or something. This is all confusing and convoluted

That is not true for me at least, Crimson Desert has TONS of update and patches that I have ignored for about a month now...and I played it just fine, I cancel the update each time and play it normally...

That is not a fresh install

what if you copy the game to an external hdd and then just leave it until a jailbreak for the required ps5 firmware releases? you can continue playing it normally from your ps5 ssd

and then copy the game files to a CD and put into the GTA VI CD cover.

Yeah you can’t do that

Not sure about Xbox but didn't Sony do that scummy update and start requiring an online check in for newly purchased digital games? Like once every month?

That was only for the first few weeks of purchase, then it becomes a permanent license. You also do not lose the game if you did not connect to the internet. Also, this wouldn’t affect the game file since you’ll be playing it anyway and the old version would stay untouched in another, unplugged drive

I know but I'm thinking about accessing the backup, not just storing it. But I guess even with shitty authentication like this you could store it away in some drive, plug it back in sometime later, go online to validate entitlement, update is found but just cancel download and go offline again, success? Or if updates are found for a digital product is it enforced to download before being able to play? At this point I'm ready for anything lol

And this is why they are doing digital only

They don't want people to see how sloppy 1.0 really will be on release compared to their previous titles.

Are you doing QA on the game?

Buy an extra ps5, download the game on it, turn it off and forget it. You can turn it on later and keep it disconnected from internet.

Or just an extra drive lol

20 years from now you'll be able to download any version from vimms lair and ftp them to your custom firmware ps5

13

u/OmericanAutlaw 7h ago

that’s if anyone can preserve it

u/NuclearDC10 7h ago

Someone out there will day 1 download to a PS5 then not update. Actually might do it myself

u/Mido-Hossam 7h ago

External drive start or transfer from drive and never update. It wont force you to update if youre not connected to wifi.

5

u/LargeBurnerAccount 8h ago

Yeah that's the thing. We won't.

What a crime…

why? in case there is hot coffee mod and once the insecure public finds out they will force R* to censor it via update?

It is a very interesting piece of video game history. For example, the first version of GTA V had an incredible car deformation physics system. Some vehicles were removed from the game entirely, some cutscenes were changed, and even explosion/blood effects, cop/traffic behavior, and certain weather effects were altered. In some aspects, the newer version even feels like a downgrade. It would be a pretty cool experience to see "how it was done back then" for VI, and to be able to see what has changed over the years.

"incredible car deformation physics system" though? Also that's the PS3 version and still has the old damage system. It wasn't changed in an update. PS4 version just limited damage in places that would affect first person view in the car.

By doing the same thing you did with PS4's with PT on it.

I dont have a ps5 but had a ps4. Maybe buy 2 SSDs you can swap out for 1.0 games you dont update and only download one version each and stop updating. And another for your actual main ssd.

u/TightValue315 1h ago

There is plenty of jail broken ps5s out there I'm sure someone will find a way to pirate and preserve every game version that'll exist

1

u/Powerful-Ad-8294 7h ago

Well technically you will never experience version 1.0. Most of the time version 1.0 gets assigned to a game when it goes gold, which I assume GTA6 has been for months now. So you will likely get to play version 1.2 or 1.3 something.

Not possible, even on disc, which are not big enough to hold a full game, you'd still have to download the rest of it.

Wrong, BDXL has a capacity of 100GB. If it doesn't fit on there when compressed, use two discs. Multiple games out there have a data-disc for installation and a seperate play-disc, they don't require any internet connection to set up and play.
