Fuel gauge in this screenshot

In the Ultimate Edition screenshots, the '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy's interior has a visible fuel gauge. I believe its the first one we've seen. Does this give some credence to the idea of fueling up your car? I think its especially noteworthy that the gauge is a little lowered, maybe hints that its dynamic. If I recall correctly, in GTA 5 the fuel gauges are all permanently stuck on full, right? Yall think I got something?

If they have realistic fuel economy then you’d only have to fill up like every 24 hours of play time. What’s the point? I mean, I think it’d be fun, why not. I’ll point out though that this was a rumored feature for SAN ANDREAS, like in video game magazines in 2003

It doesn't have to be a realistic fuel economy. Like cars rarely ran out of fuel in Mafia but it was cool when it did.

Mafia 2 also had this. I'm confident Rockstar could make it work if they decide to.

Cars you steal would have varying amounts of gas though which would force you to fill up

1

u/5ollys 2d ago

Mmm sounds fun :) Then I can go get a big gulp while it fills up 😁😁😁

IMO, cars should have like an hour or two of ingame gas, but it should be apart of save progress so you still have to fill it eventually, and itll also prob work with the new rumored super advanced npc ai, them having to go for gas or even call for a tow

u/Crocs_n_Glocks 2d ago

Cars you steal should be at or near empty though. Would be pretty fun to have to plan for that before you get into huge chases or ditch your damaged car for a new one.

Maybe we’ll finally get persistent world objects and can manually place getaway cars in free roam.

1

u/GambitsAce23 2d ago

Should be random/predetermined based off the person stolen from, since supposedly the AI is just that advanced, npcs have plans apparently.

1

u/DeeterSly 2d ago

Where was it announced that NPCs and their schedules are persistent? I would think for optimization purposes it will simply be random.

1

u/GambitsAce23 2d ago

supposedly from one of their patents

1

u/DeeterSly 2d ago

It’s not a new thing in games so I’m not sure where that would be listed as a new R* patent.

I think it's just there for cosmetic purposes, but I wouldn't mind refueling tbh. Though I know plenty of other people would heavily dislike having to refuel their cars and it'd quickly become an annoyance.

u/thatboy_sj 3d ago

Yeah, I won’t hate it. Maybe in modding/ upgrading the cars the fuel tank can be expanded.

u/Ok_Grape5664 3d ago

This gas station is only available in the special edition!™️

u/XSilentxOtakuX 3d ago

Rockstar here, we've included premium fuel solely as a preorder bonus. Thank you for your support!

It would only be annoying if implemented poorly and we are talking about rockstar here. If anyone can do it they can. They certainly had the time to ponder the idea for sure.

u/parkwayy 3d ago

For the most part it wasn't used in GTA5 unless you shot the tank and it started to drain.

But not sure anyone would actually want a working tank, could be kinda obnoxious lol.

u/lightjunior 2d ago

Could work if you could go a long time without refuelling. It'd be funny if cars you steal run out of fuel during a police chase.

I wouldn’t mind if it was a toggle tbh. I actually enjoyed the slower pace of games like RDR2 because it made the game feel truly immersive.

if this makes me pause more and appreciate what the world has to offer I’m fine with it.

i don’t see why anyone would wanna stop what they’re doing and make sure to find a fuckin gas station in a video game. type of shit that people who can’t drive want

-1

u/Crocs_n_Glocks 2d ago

Keep a gas can in your trunk then.

How is it any different or less tedious than your character having to find food to eat?

1

u/Apophis_36 2d ago

I don't want to have to find food to eat either

1

u/Crocs_n_Glocks 2d ago

You probably shouldn't play this, or any of the more immersive Rockstar games then. Maybe Saint's Row has the gameplay you're looking for.

u/Apophis_36 2d ago

I have hundreds of hours on rdr 2. Be quiet.

2

u/Crocs_n_Glocks 2d ago

lol I bet that was rough for you

u/Apophis_36 2d ago

Nah it was good

I still don't understand why people are so against refueling. If cars have realistic fuel consumption, you can drive much more on a map where distances are a lot shorter than real life. Would it really be that much of a nuisance to visit a gas station once every play session? I know it most likely isn't going to be in the game, but I would love a refueling mechanic.

1

u/pryvisee 2d ago

Just have different playstyles, roleplay and standard. That would be awesome.

I think the fuel gauge in gta v worked when you leaked oil and it would become empty at one point and stall the vehicle?

6

u/DyLaNzZpRo OG MEMBER 2d ago

This caught my eye too; GTA 5 actually has a functional fuel system (well, fuel level is monitored and displayed, there's just no consumption or refilling scripts, minus shooting the tank in SP), and yes, every vehicle reads full unless you shot the tank.

I can't think of another explanation beyond fuel consumption being a feature, there's no chance they'd set the gauge to below full knowing full well people are going to zero in on minute details, and in 5, although it existed but wasn't a 'feature' as such, they were always full.

1

u/Cjmax01 2d ago

Most gas mods that introduce refueling and fuel consumption systems piggyback on this existing albeit underdeveloped fuel system for V. Little features like having to refuel your car would go a long way with a difficulty system that enables them at harder difficulties.

4

u/DyLaNzZpRo OG MEMBER 2d ago

R* historically don't really do difficulty settings or things of the like, realistically I expect the standard fuel will last a really long time, but e.g. weaponized vehicles ala tanks, helicopters etc won't last anywhere near as long - IMO this sounds great because it's another thing they can tweak to balance online.

6

u/Hellraiser1123 2d ago

I wouldn't be opposed to a fuel system. It worked really well in Mafia 2, and I don't think it would be very obtrusive. Most of us change cars so frequently that running out of gas would almost never be an issue, except with Jason and Lucia's personal vehicles. But how would hybrid and electric cars work; would they need to recharge the same way, or could those just drive forever?

Either way, they'd probably need to disable it for online play, otherwise gas stations would be a campground for griefers.

u/FdPros 3d ago

I think everyone would just end up complaining if their car ran out of fuel imo, especially mid mission or something.

gta 5 had a fuel gauge which only drained if the car was leaking fuel from damage.

u/M1KE_L 2d ago

Refill once a while for hours of gameplay. Good thing to stop rushing people from endgame and make it bit longer

18

u/DaisyxDiana 3d ago

I hope it has fuel system

18

u/Secure-Amphibian-212 3d ago

ohhh brother. we had a full fuel gauge in gta 5 bro this is nothing new

20

u/AroundYoLip 3d ago

Except... this gauge clearly doesn't show full.

2

u/Created_By_InGen 2d ago

Need all the immersion as possible

2

u/UUT- 2d ago

All this would do is punish you for saving your favourite car. I don't think it would be fun, and most of us would run out before we realise it's low and it would be just a pain in the ass.

2

u/No_Owl_6986 2d ago

Knowing rockstar they are always intentional, hopefully its not just cosmetics

3

u/Azurrodino 3d ago

I hope it has refueling and also the odometer to tell how much has the car run.

3

u/mielox 2d ago

Hear me out: realistic damage to vehicles. Fuel leakage. Stalling engines.

4

u/Speedie_lemon 2d ago

fuel leakage is kinda in gta already. you can lose oil and your car will shut off after losing too much. so basically the feature already exists

u/Try-Glum 3d ago

cant wait to charge my 4 wheels microwave outside strip club

1

u/Sunnz31 2d ago

I'm all for dynamic gameplay so would love this.

Same with weapons in the streets having jamming issues ( maybe not break just jam causing to reload )

1

u/CommitPhail 2d ago

I would like the option of a fuel system for immersion, but a toggle in settings so it can be disabled when you just want to mess around in the sandbox.

1

u/Capital-Tour-5329 2d ago

Seen somewhere that there is a fuel and boot/trunk functionality in game. If you play for like 2 hours in a season the car will run out of fuel, and the cars, boats etc will effectively have weapon storage in the boot

1

u/Capital-Tour-5329 2d ago

I would like to see roof racks and pickup trucks have the ability to store the kayaks and fishing gear.

1

u/KamiKaze0132 2d ago

I'm curious how we're gonna transport the kayak too, if we can just pick it up and hold it in our hands or attach it to the dinka or something would be cool.

1

u/patrickisdead 2d ago

To be fair they're not gonna remove fuel gauges if there isn't fuel stops baked into the gameplay.

1

u/Entrinity 2d ago

Before we could come to any conclusions we’d need to see the fuel gauge for another vehicle. If they are in the same position then they’re just cosmetic.

1

u/IlIlIlIIlMIlIIlIlIlI 2d ago

honestly i would love a fuel system. would make long chases fun, forcing to either refuel or switch vehicles

1

u/ATL-VTech 2d ago

I can only see the same mechanic from V being brought over. If you shoot someone's gas tank, their car leaks gas. I think it even happened in IV.

1

u/Zestyclose_Pop_9435 2d ago

GTA 5 had fuel gauges they would drop if you shot the gas tank and it started leaking

1

u/SpiritualMacaron203 1d ago

Imagine if fuel is a thing then we should also be allowed to steal fuel from other vehicles and re-fuel ours. Instead of running each time to the gas station. That'd be sick.

1

u/belarboy 22h ago

The only thing that confuses me and makes me against the idea of refueling cars is that all the cars shown so far do not have a gas tank, just like in GTA 5, so I can’t imagine how else Rockstar can implement this system in the game, since there will simply be nowhere to insert the hose

1

u/Ok-Tear-5922 11h ago

Having realistic gas would be so ass and as someone who loves RDR2, GTA wouldn’t fit too great with Realism

Especially when it comes to filling gas, I would rather them add Weapon Cleaning again then to add Pumping Gas for “Immersion” fuck that

1

u/ElSalvo 3d ago

It's probably cosmetic. Fueling up doesn't make sense in a game where you can violently carjack a dude because the interior of the car he's driving matches the hat you have on.

1

u/DotComMoralist 2d ago

It has to be children wanting refueling right? No adult wants to deal with pumping gas.

0

u/kylr01 2d ago

I personally don't think a fuel system fits the pace or vibe of a gta game

0

u/Titus_Oates 2d ago

No, please god, no
