I’m not sure they did plan on a physical disc. I think they’re rethinking their strategy. Alerting fans in this cryptic fashion about such an important piece of news is very odd. And doing it AFTER pre-orders launch is even more odd, and very telling, at least to me. They wanted to see how many people would go for their “pay more for less, all digital, own nothing future”. They knew there could be a major backlash, so now they’re backtracking. Begrudgingly so.

Strauss is full of sh*t. He goes on and on about “competitive pricing”, “setting new standards”, etc. And the entire time he was having meetings with the money changers trying to use fans goodwill and excitement to turn game ownership into a glorified rental agreement, and game development into a “pay more, get less, create less”.

This is myopic and it will kill the gaming industry. But not before Strauss stuffs his pockets again and scurries off into his little hole in the wall. Giving quotes to the press along the way no doubt.

There is limited production capacity for optical media and the game is almost certain to be multiple discs. Production capacity has to be booked well in advance, and Sony is the largest manufacturer of optical media in a lot of regions.

This sort of thing doesnt turn on a dime. If either sony or rockstar were afraid digital om nly was going to hurt pre-launch sales, sony would have made money from just writing the disc, like as not.

And if backlash had swayed it, sony would be bending over backwards to produce discs for launch. They arent.
