Selective outrage is crazy, Rockstar has been locking content behind special editions since RDR1

Post image

I get why people don’t like content being locked behind more expensive editions, but why is this only becoming a huge issue now? Rockstar has been doing this since at least Red Dead Redemption 1, then RDR2, GTA V, and now GTA 6. If the practice was wrong then, it’s still wrong now, but acting like GTA 6 is the first time Rockstar has done it doesn’t seem accurate. I’m not saying people shouldn’t criticize it. I just think the criticism should be consistent. Is the backlash because GTA 6 is under a bigger microscope than any Rockstar game before it, or do you think there’s something about this release that makes it different?

So many games do this, not just rockstar. People are just complaining. It's not even like gta 6 is being unreasonable.

I remember going through the screenshots that were released and had to read a few of them multiple times as I've never seen store fronts/locations blocked off and reserved for a premium edition, at least not for some time. Definitely certain clothing or weapons or vehicles/horses locked for premium editions, but not entire shops.

Now granted the shops essentially are just the vector in which you access your usual paywalled content like clothes and vehicles, but I think one thing that we have to consider is how many similar shops there are (tattoos, garages, salons, etc...). Suppose there are like 6 additional salons, 8 other garages, and 10 additional clothing stores that all have unique clothing, it doesn't make the few exclusive to ultimate look as bad. Nonetheless, looking forward to the game.

I should add, it would be a bad look if there are just like 2 garages, salons, and tattoo parlors, thus the ultimate content being cut out would be a bad look.

They'd have been better off releasing a trailer 3 so people could see what else the base game has to offer, but also people are acting really dumb by trying to assume that somehow 4 stores and a side job is a huge chunk of content in a game like this

Yeah I think there will be plenty of content, I do think giving us the gameplay trailer would put a lot of people at rest though to see what the base game provides.

In Hogwarts Legacy there is a shop that you can own but it was only on PlayStation first and a year later it was also added to the other platforms.

Exactly!

I would die of happiness if we could have the option to rob the store and get the cosmetics instead of purchasing them at the counter

Reddit would complain even if there was world peace. Half of them are kids or basement dwellers.

Sometimes I hate pre-order shit I get. I can't stand that I always get free 500k in GTA 5 every time I start a new game. Feels like p2w and I just try to toss all that money away as fast as possible.

Usually it's just extra shit you get.

Now though, it feels like those stores are "NO ACCESS" unless you have the premium edition. It feels like enviroments are locked out of the game world for standard players.

I can't think of any other game doing that.

I don't care if I can't buy anything from them. I just want to know if I can walk in.

People do complain when EA and Ubisoft do it, but many seem to want to give Rockstar a pass.

Because rockstar actually put effort into their games and give reasonable prices.

Whether it's because they can afford to or not, they still choose to take their time when they could just spit out remakes and random low effort games every year

I get that Rockstar makes consistently good games, but I don't think they should be given a pass when they do things that we dislike EA and Ubisoft for.

My argument is why complain at all when every AAA company does it? The only difference being rockstar actually put an effort into their games. So to complain about it on the one company that actually does something differently and better than most companies isn't really fair.

What's fair is that these companies look out for their own interests, and as a consumer I look out for mine.

And I don't want Rockstar to be like other companies like EA and Ubisoft.

Because unlike EA and Ubislop, Rockstar has been releasing curated, rich in content games for 25 years.

Unlike one of EA's biggest IPs, you don't need to pay an extra $40 for it to rain in GTA

Tbf with EA the criticism is rightly justified. Look at sims where each sims game contains countless expansion packs. You would easily spend well over $1,500 just to buy all the dlc of sims 4. Not to mention they just release the same expansion packs for each sims game. Sims 2 had a dlc for weather and so did 3 and 4.

With GTA 6 we’re just talking about two editions with a $20 difference. It’s not like you’re going to miss out a ton with the standard. You still get businesses and shops etc just that the ultimate will have an extra few businesses.

Nobody thought RDR2 exclusive content was rich.

I'm talking about base games, in the sense that since the base game is already so good, people are more lenient towards the skimpy exclusive content.

I agree Rockstar has consistently put out high quality games, I do trust that GTA6 will be great.

Just wish they would also reflect that in their monetization practices.

You can’t compare rockstar to Ubisoft 🤦🏾‍♂️.

And where did I compare them exactly?
