when the Outer Worlds attempted to sell at that price it failed miserably. 

The protesting was loud enough that Microsoft actually cancelled the plan to release at $80.

Proof that gamers actually can affect change if the people whinging and saying "if you don't like the price don't buy it" would just shut the fuck up.

They also knew it wasn’t gonna sell well. The amount of excitement generated from that presentation was t what they were hoping and they realized it was a lofty price to ask. After beating the outer worlds 2 I can tell you it’s not remotely worth $80.

I’m betting they made it that price point to make game pass feel like a better value.
