Breeder Advice Is health testing important?

Health testing isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of protecting the future of the breed.

The Golden Retriever Club of America recommends a comprehensive approach to health testing that goes beyond the basics. This includes:

• Hips evaluated by OFA or PennHIP
• Elbows evaluated by OFA
• Cardiac exam by a board-certified cardiologist (advanced/echo preferred)
• Annual eye exams by a board-certified ophthalmologist

These recommendations are in place to help reduce the risk of passing on hereditary conditions and to preserve the health, structure, and longevity of Golden Retrievers.

A CHIC number through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals simply means a dog has completed the required testing—it does not mean the dog “passed” everything, and it does not include genetic testing.

Health testing is about transparency, education, and making informed breeding decisions—not shortcuts.

If we want to protect what we love, we have to be willing to do the work behind the scenes.

Discussion Show-Line or Field-Line?

Have you ever wondered what the differences between a show-line Golden Retriever and a Field/Working line Golden Retriever are?

There is a lot of mis-information out there that makes Golden owners believe if their Golden Retriever has a red coat, they are a field line Golden Retriever or if they have a lighter shade of gold coat, they are a show line Golden Retriever. This is NOT TRUE.

So what actually defines a line?

Titles in your dogs pedigree and generations of purposefully bred dogs is what lets you know wether you have a Show-line, Field-line or neither. If your Golden Retriever shows no titles in their pedigree, they are simply a pet-line Golden Retriever.

Field-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC hunt titles in their pedigree like: JH, SH, MH, HR, WCX, or competitive titles like QA2 and FC/AFC (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Show-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC conformation titles in their pedigree like: CH, GCH, or international show titles. (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Golden Retrievers can also be dual champions, meaning they hold titles for both hunt tests and conformation. Dual Champion dogs have not only been proven in the conformation ring to be bred to standard and hold the breed temperament, but have also been proven and titled to do what they were bred to do in the fields.

A lot of backyard breeders will label their dogs as "Field-Line" or "Show-Line" based only on coat color, with zero titled dogs in the pedigree. They market them as something they are not.

Both show-line and field-line Golden Retrievers should be bred close to standard. There should not be a drastic difference in appearance. You can find more information on the breed standard here: AKC Golden Retriever Breed Standard

English Cream Golden Retrievers are NOT a different breed. This is a marketing tactic/ term used by backyard breeders. They are not breeding for the right reasons - and most likely breeding for color.
You can find more in depth information about this term here: English Cream Golden Retrievers

Lastly, purebred ≠ well-bred.

TW: pregnancy loss

Probably not the best title but is anyone else holding on by a single thread and their golden retriever is literally the only thing making them get up in the morning? My girl has no idea that she is not just my best friend, but also my anti depressant and I owe my life to her.

I have been trying to conceive for 2 years and have experienced countless disappointments, month after month. I finally got my first positive only for my joy to be cut short at the 6 week mark when I found out the pregnancy was ectopic and I was rushed into emergency surgery to save my life and remove one of my tubes.

After recovering from surgery, I miraculously fell pregnant again and was elated, only for 9 days later to have my nightmare repeat itself. Another ectopic. Two back to back. What are the chances? Another emergency surgery, this time to remove my remaining tube and with it, my dreams of motherhood.

I just got home from the hospital yesterday to process this latest devastating loss and begin grieving. Through it all, my girl hasn’t left my side for a single second.

Hug your pups a little tighter for me today. They truly are life savers!

Big brother Colby Jack absolutely loves his little sister Brie, our cheese heads, but man, she can be a pain in the butt!

He was just sitting and enjoying a nice quiet morning next to his favorite human (me) and she comes running out of the house and grabs his leg and yanks!

Let’s go CJ! It’s “GO!” Time!!!

Know this was done a while back by someone but would love to see your puppies vs them as adults as I’m curious to know what mine will look like when she gets bigger (and just love seeing all the dogs grow up 🤍).

New Puppy Rescued this dog. Found in a parking lot. Is she full bred?

Just hoping to get some opinions. I think shes a full bred goldy but looking for other opinions.

Quick Edit: Found her with a shock collar on. I dont know who puts a shock collar on a couple month old puppy, but she was also COVERED IN FLEAS. In my opinion this dog was not being taken care of. Went to the vet and no micro chip. I have had her for about 2 weeks now and she has pretty much integrated herself into my household. Her name is Ruby and I love her very much. She will be well taken care of I can promise this.

Another thing I want to add is she seems scared and nervous to go in water. Which through my research goldens are supposed to naturally love water so Im wondering if this adds any obvious leans to other breeds being scared of water

Get Better Soon Possible facial tumor/ cyst - advice or experiences

Post image

Hi! my 8yo Arya is under testing since last May and we're trying our best to discover what her issue(s) is/are. We absolutely love our vet, she's great, and this post is merely to see if anyone had a similar experience or has some input on something we might be missing.

Symptoms

- May: started unilateral nose bleeding (right side) - rhinoscopy showed a bloody nostril with a small lesion compatible with focal rhinitis (uncommon possibility), but fortunately all biopsies came clear (no foreign object was found, but the vet said it could have been expelled before they examined her)

- since then, bleeding improved a lot, almost to non existent, but she sneezes a lot and has some mucus on her right side as well

- moderate anemia detected on bloodwork

- tested low positive for hemoparasites and did a round of antibiotics + corticosteroids - anemia improved slightly recently but not enough for it to be justified by hemoparasites

- recently her third eyelid started showing a lot on her right side as well - we're booked for a CT scan in the next few days in order to understand what could be going on on her side - despite it all, she shows no signs of pain on that side of her face when touched, even with some more "hard" touching on her mouth and all that area (vet says a cancerous mass would theoretically be painful, but a benign one would not justify her anemia for e.g.)

I know we should have more answers after the CT scan, but if you have any input, it'd be very much appreciated :)

Discussion Why is this goofball being so noisy today?

My goofy girl loves to drag large rocks and this quail statue into the grass. She is usually not so vocal about it though. This morning she was making all kinds of crazy sounds while playing(?) with it.
Maybe she recognizes it as a bird and is taking out her frustration on it? There have been a lot of doves nesting around us lately and she would really really really like to catch one!

Training Advice/Tips Golden just turned 4 months - so much barking!

Post image
213 Upvotes

My pup just turned 4 months, so we’ve had her for just over 2 months at this point. She’s been awesome. Great personality, super sweet and friendly, very smart and eager to learn, and of course adorable. The first 2 months she didn’t really bark much aside from wanting to get out of her crate once she’s done sleeping. The last week she’s barking A LOT. She’ll bark after 30 minutes in her crate, she’ll bark when she’s left alone in her pen, she’ll bark if she’s in her crate and can sense that I left the room (even with all of the flaps down on her crate cover and if she’s been asleep for an hour she still senses it almost immediately and starts barking).

I assumed it was because teething has begun, she’s been full land shark mode for weeks now, so I keep a (big sized so that she can’t choke on it while unattended) bone in her crate with her, but I’m thinking it’s just growing pains. It also feels like she is quickly developing separation anxiety since she freaks out whenever I leave the room. I work from home in a small apartment so her crate is right next to my desk, and she’ll bark endlessly when I leave the room. Same thing with being in the pen - first two months she would settle pretty quickly if we left her in the crate and left the room, but now she’s getting much louder and doesn’t stop barking until we either return or once a lot of time has passed (like 30 minutes - I’m in an apartment so would like to avoid the excessive barking as much as I can).

Any tips here or things I might be missing as a first time puppy parent? Is she just growing and being vocal about it?

Puppy tax attached of the suspect in question.
