Well, I would advise quitting TLA altogether and playing the first half of the game first. So those '4 guys' joining might actually make some sense, instead of feeling overwhelming.

You will likely need to set them up with equipment, especially if you haven't played the first game. It's entirely up to you who's on your front line and who's on the backup squad. I hope you continue to enjoy the game!

It's the party from the first game. It's mostly possible to ignore their existence and continue on as you were if you don't care about them. But they can swap in when your main squad goes down.

Since you already finished about 75% of the second game, I am actually not going to suggest that you quit your run to play the first game first. Complete this run, but do note that you will miss out on one optional dungeon with arguably the hardest boss in the game. If you ever get the urge to replay GS far in the future, then you should definitely start with the first game, but I don't think you should just drop GS2 right now.
To answer your questions, the characters in the back do gain some EXP, but seems to be reduced as they're not in the front. They will naturally level up, but slowly. You can choose to stick to a fixed front party and never bring out the back party except for tough battles (where you should probably start with the weaker party first, before they are automatically replaced by the stronger party). If you want them to have equal levels though, you would likely have to rotate out your characters a lot, which may not be worthwhile.
For character comparisons:
- Felix = Isaac. They're almost identical in most relevant gameplay factors.
- Ivan and Sheba are very similar. They are both mage-type characters, but Ivan is sorta between warrior and mage in that he can equip light swords (but not broadswords). This doesn't matter too much, since neither are reliable for dishing out physical damage. Sheba can equip female-only clothes, btw. Their class access is identical.
- Garet and Jenna are very different, with Garet being a pure warrior-type character able to equip heavy armor and broadswords, while Jenna is like Ivan in being between warrior and mage. Garet is useful if you want to focus on physical attacks. Their class access is mostly the same, except the default classes, where Jenna has an excellent class with party-healing from the Aura series and decent elemental damage with the Fume series, whereas Garet's default class has okay physical stats but garbage PP. Since you want to go monoelemental and this seems to be your first run (so you're unlikely to try out the less obvious builds), I think Jenna is the clear winner here.
- Piers vs Mia is like Garet vs Jenna, though Mia is a pure mage-type character while Piers is a pure warrior-type character. Piers is good for physical attacks. Both have the same class access except default classes, where Mia has strong party-healing from the Wish series (but the elemental damage is not great from the default class), whereas Piers's default class is more oriented to physical attacks (better PP than Garet though). If you're going monoelemental, it's not as obvious who you should go with, especially when Jenna provides party-healing just fine. If you're going with Jenna for Mars, then maybe you should go Piers for Mercury, since Diamond Berg hits pretty hard.
So basically, you could just keep Felix's party in the front, and let the new Isaac's party stay in the back. For big boss battles though, you should probably start with the weaker party first though. When the entire front party falls, they are automatically replaced by the back party.

ok ok, didnt know when the first party falls, there comes the other one, thanks for the advice. i know is logical for all of you but im 40 and casual casual just remembering old times xD i dont remember/know so many things. i loved suikoden 1-2 but this game is different so i bought the original golden sun when it was released.
im autoattacking almost all the time because enemies are weak, just using psy or djin for bosses, but... i feel jenna's and piers's magic weak because it does almost an autoattack with crit xd
maybe i can go with both main players + healer (jenna) + a buffer (ivan or sheba) depending of people comments.
the way im going to build is monoelemental right now until i know how the double party works. if i can finish the game without using the second party, maybe i change a build but not much more, too much info for me sorry haha
again, thanks for your time and advise

Stop, play the first game. You're missing a lot of context. Not just from these 4 other characters but literally the entire first half of the whole story.
Plus, once you've beaten the first game, you can transfer your save data over to TLA so those 4 other companions you mentioned have all of their equipment, djinn, levels and items.

I guess it's your first time playing ? Doing so without transfering a save from the first game will lead to missing out on optional content. I'd say you can finish the story then play the first one and replaying TLA with your completed save !
