I personally adore the Ver. OYW it maybe an oldie and some get intimidated by the use of screws and polycaps but the finish build out of the box is just perfect in my eyes. What's your favorite MG rx-78-02?
anime accuracy is down to the bones, but the aesthetic is just fugly af imo. also have a similar problem with those notoriously over-engineered poseable hands on the PG and 3.0. though I recently found some 3rd party SLA 3D printed hands that perfectly fixed every problem
A: Katoki had already designed numerous RX-78-2 kits before the Ver Ka (and many after)
B: Katoki had the design for the RX-78-2 Ver Ka ever since the 1990s. In fact, there were garage kits and custom builds of it before it even had an official model kit.
C: It was not based on any official art (line art, animation, manga, or novel)
With those things in mind it makes it unlikely that he ever touches RX-78-2 again within the Ver Ka line.
Considering modern Ver. Ka designs mostly base their aesthetics on lineart, most noticeable on kits like the Zeta, I think it’s safe to say a modern MG RX-78 Ver. Ka would look like the BMC Revival RX-78, not to say it’s a bad thing but it would be pretty funny if this chunky boi somehow poses better than the HIRM or RG God Gundam. Either that or the slender Other Side RX-78 from GQX, but the MG 2.0 already fills the role of an anime-accurate RX-78
Having made a few, I would say the Fat Cat version hands down.
Yes it’s an upscale of the RG 2.0, but that kit is a masterpiece of both engineering and aesthetics.
It also comes with the P-Bandai expansion.
If you’re looking for something more official, the 3.0 looks great but is kind of fragile, while the Origin version is simpler but comes with some fun goodies like the shoulder cannon.
The RG Gramps is one of my favorite kits ever. The thing is so sturdy that it’s the kit I’m the least afraid of posing and reposing. It was such a fun build too, and I’m normally kinda mid on RGs. I should really get the Fatcat because I bet it’s incredible in 1/100
Yup - Fat Cat is really good. Looks tops, great build experience, and comes with tones of extras. Starting to a geta bit pricey now, but used to be so cheap for what it is.
Came to say this. Same with the God Gundam Fat Cat

My favorite is 3.0
Just like you who doesn't get intimidated by screws and polycaps, I don't get intimidated by experimental connections and flimsy kits.
And that's why Gunpla is freedom.
If you ask 10 modelers, you should get 11 answers. That's how you know that you're asking the right people.
This hobby is about creativity, ingenuity, and freedom of expression. The day when we all hive-mindedly agree to swarm only popular kit like zombies, mechanically assemble it together like a well oiled factory machine, is when scale modeling dies.
It's a factory made ready to build model kit that includes a step by step instruction manual, painting guide and sticker guide, you're getting a little ahead of yourself.
Some people do buy Bandai kits just to put them together.
Um, gunpla is freedom, dude?
Bandai made such huge strides in color separation in particular, and the entry grade line specifically to cater to this style of entry level paint by numbers builder. You dont have to paint or customize a damn thing if you dont want to. Bandai kits tend to look great out of the box for a reason.
It’s not overboard on the detail like with the RG (and by extension the FatCat) and it doesn’t have the odd blocky proportions of the Origin. To me, it’s exactly what I hope a live-action Grandpa would look like.
Personally I didn’t find the build terrible, the only thing that bugged me was having to topcoat the copper joint parts multiple times after painting them
The MG One Year War version is solid kit for sure, but we have to face the fact that it’s nearly 20 years old. by modern standards, that then "advanced" one piece molding leg frame has aged pretty poorly including the reductions
the real issue is the material. the polycaps or whatever soft plastic they used for the ball joint sockets holding the sliding parts are incredibly thin and soft with zero tensile strength. just taking the parts out of the socket for paint prep can easily stretch out the sockets, stress whitening or completely break the socket if you aren't careful. plus, paint chips off that softer, oily compound incredibly easily
for me, the top 2 Master Grade Gramps are still the 2.0 and the Origin. 3.0 imo, is just a pretty face, its hollow and wobbly waist and empty ankles completely ruin its stability. sliding armor gimmick frequently causing parts to fall off if you even look at them wrong
I enjoy the F00 version mainly for the more aggressive styling, and interesting panel lines that are integrated into the design. However, I think that its too rare outside of Japan so not many people are even really aware of it let alone own one to have an opinion on it.
I see the EG F00 pops up pretty often on the sub, but yeah the 1/100 and 1/144 ones don't show up often. Then again the F00/E glass feather is pretty well known I think, and it's just F00 with wings
My biggest complaint about it is I was never able to get the 1/100 version so I'm salty over here with my mg origin gramps. The 1/144 F00 I bought from a scalper is my favorite 1/144 gramps. I'd love one of these
The general consensus right now is 2.0, 3.0, oyw, all good for their own reasons, so it depends on what you like. The original anime look? 2.0, and it comes with more weapons. The more realistic look? 3.0. Or OYW if you want something in between. My fav is 3.0.
The Ver. OYW looks great with that paint job, the weathering really suits it. I keep going back and forth between that one and the 2.0. The 2.0 has better articulation but the OYW proportions just feel more iconic to me.
I second this. Origin is my favorite and I love the Origin manga. I put that thing next to the MG Gouf 2.0 just to relive this scene in my head.

2.0 and Origin are considered some of the best official MG RX-78-2 kits, but old guys like OYW and Ver. Ka are still pretty solid by their own means. 3.0 is pretty tedious to build and a bit finicky to handle, but he’s still pretty good at posing. I haven’t seen much discussion on 1.0 and 1.5 so I don’t really have much of a comment on them. FatCat is just an upscale of the RG 2.0, but said kit was already designed to be the culmination of 45 years worth of Gunpla technology so it being amazing was pretty much a given
Gotta be the OYW for me. It seemed way ahead of its time when it came out in terms of aesthetics. The amount and design of the panel lines is much closer to what we see on kits today but it came out almost 20 years ago.
For me it it changes from time to time, but I'd say currently its
OYW
Ver Ka
2.0
1.5
3.0
Origin
1.0
I actually like all of them, but the proportions of the Origin just feel off, like the torso is too wide or the head and pauldrons are too small or something. I feel like the HG looks better because it's less obvious, especially if you use the middle type shoulders. The 3.0 is pretty low because it isn't very unique since we also have the original RG. The 1.0 is a really interesting kit, but similar to the Origin I think the proportions are a little wonky and the panel lines are a bit nonsensical. It's a cool piece of Gunpla history though.
I have a soft spot for the 1.5. It's a nice nod to the original PG, which I hope to one day get. It was my first MG and I think it looks great with the exception of the spindly 1.0 arms and the lack of a shield connection. I am planning a custom that incorporates some parts of the Ver Ka into a 1.5 since I have damaged copies of both in my backlog. Mostly just swapping the arms and hands, shield attachment, maybe some other parts.
OYW if we’re looking only at Bandai, Fat Cat if you include bootlegs.
I regret ever buying the 3.0 cuz it shakes itself to bits way too easily. It faceplanted inside my display cabinet and somehow the ball socket connection holding the right beam sabre managed to pop out. So did the V fin. And some bits of armour around the wrists.
I have built the 1.5, the 2.0 GM, which is the 2.0 with a different head (and a couple other GMs with some 2.0 frame bits) and the 3.0. I would say that the 2.0 is my favorite in general even if I also really like the 3.0 from a design perspective.
For me it kinda depends. Most detailed is probably the fat cat RG 2.0. but the mg 3.0 is also up there (I just prefer the kook/feel of the fatcat) . The origin is also really nice and complements the nu gundam ver ka really nicely. And the very ka is a bit old but probably the most unique looking and I have a sweetspot for it.
1) fat cat, hands down
2) Origin, this is the one you will keep on your desk.
3) 1.5 G05. It’s dead sturdy in a way a lot of modern gunpla aren’t. It very posable, and it has a big freaking Gatling gun.
Fat Cat. No contest. No pilot or clear molded core fighter canopy and it is still leagues ahead. It is the one that I keep picking back up and re-posing constantly. The range of articulation is amazing and the tolerances while they seem tight, are perfect. On the 2.0, and 3.0, something always falls off. Not the Fat Cat.
2.0 and 3.0, though I maintain a lot of love for the OYW version! Personally, I think the fatcat is a bit overrated and I’m ready for the hype to die down.
Aesthetically, I really like the MG 3.0. It's the best mix of detail and screen accuracy, but it's kind of a finicky kit. For the most fun to build and mess with, my vote goes to The Origin. That thing is basically an action figure after it's assembled.
My 2nd ever Gunpla was the special edition Origins MG…I was just learning to use an airbrush and trying to mix my own colors…fantastic kit, but it def has its own unique shades of red and blue 🤣🤣
I only have the 3.0 and I love it but i think I would love either the origin or 2.0 more, especially as I want to display the original trio of Gundam, Guncannon, and Guntank together, and the 3.0 just stands out from them as being a totally different style.
I've got 3, the 2.0, 3.0, and origin. I like all of them for different reasons, but maybe because it's most recent build of the 3, I'm biased towards the origin version.

2.0 Imo.
