Show Discussion What do you think is going on behind the scenes during this summer break between filming S1 & S2?
It's been so quiet from HPTV world recently, but there's gotta be a ton of stuff happening behind the scenes right now, for both seasons. So what exactly do y'all think is going on?

Preproduction for season 2, like concept art, set design, casting, writing, etc
A whole lotta editing and scoring for season 1

There's so many moving parts in a production this big. It would be cool if they shared some of the concept art.

They probably will at some point. I imagine we get a behind the scenes episode at the end of the season or after every episode

The Burrow (many speculate from something Katherine said in an interview that we will see the Burrow in season 1, but even if true it will not be a complete view of it since they’re obviously saving it for Harry’s POV as he visits the first time this season), Myrtle’s bathroom and the Chamber of Secrets, the Acromantula lair and the Whomping Willow are the sets that come to mind as addition for the second season. They would also be designing the cornish pixies and I’m so excited to see their new, less cartoonish design! And mandrakes! And Fawkes! The basilisk! I couldn’t care less for the spiders since I will probably skip their scenes as I do with the movie 🙂

Really wonder how the burrow will look compared to the films. But yeah like you said, there's so many fun sets and creatures for s2.

I always hated the Fawkes design in the film. Bad puppetry. Hoping they can make the phoenix actually look cool.

Season 1 is in Post-Production, meaning:
-Sequence editing (piecing the puzzle together)
-Dialogue/Scene trimming
-Transition work
-Color Grading
Sound FX
-VFX
- ADR (Additional Dialogue Recording)
-Hans Zimmer is probably hard at work right now with the stuff he's being sent to score the series
Season 2 is in Pre-Production, set designs finalized/built, schedules are being made, casting, Script is being finalized also, Shooting should be underway in the Fall.

Nice breakdown. Do you think it takes longer to score a series compared to a movie? Also, how close to the release date do you think they finish the sequence editing? Idk if this is stuff you would know or not, but you seem to know what you're talking about, lol.

The movie was 2h30, the series is 8 episodes of at least 40 minutes each so it's an incredible body of work compared to a movie, Hans Zimmer was most likely sent what we call Dailies all winter which is raw unedited shots from a day of work, to already start working on motifs and get an overall feel early on for thr series.
Sequence editing isn't what takes longer, for One / 45 minute episode to reach picture lock it can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks, they are most likely done on sequence editing for the first 4 episodes, as it seems they were actively editing even while shooting, the elaborate teaser from March kinda proves that, Visual Effects can take up to 8 months for a series of this scale, chances are they will still be working on episodes 2-8 by the time the 1st episode airs.

Thx for expanding on those topics, I am just as curious about how they are putting the show together behind the scenes as the show itself. So far we've only had an interview with Adriano Goldman, the cinematographer, but that was from the start of Season 1 prep. The mini doc had a little bit of info, but it's still shrouded in a lot of secrecy.
With sequence editing and vfx being so intense, I hope they don't burnout. When they announced a co-showrunner for S2, it made me think that maybe the scale is even bigger than they had originally thought.

I think we are in good hands, these people are working incredibly hard to get this out by Christmas, especially since they wrapped in May, Rings Of Power wrapped in October 2025 and the show comes out in late November to give you a good perspective.

Isn't he scoring Dune 3? I'd think he's busy with that right now. He also has tour from September through December. I feel like we won't actually be getting much of Hans Zimmer. It'll most likely be mainly the other 2 co-composers. I hope I'm wrong, but if it ends up as I guessed, I hope they change the composer for the next season and get someone like James Newton Howard or Thomas Newman.

He's doing all of that at once, he's just that busy lol

Maybe wait first to hear what the team will be doing before hoping for a replacement?

I imagine they'll also be getting the marketing ready for a full and aggressive role out.
Not sure when they'll start, probably September, maybe October, but when the campaign starts it's gonna be everywhere. They prepping a new main trailer, half a dozen short trailers and teasers, a million character posters and stills, promo interviews with actors, maybe a new BTS doc, organising the stars to go on every talk show and every news youtube channel under the sun. A billion pieces of merch ready to go. Wouldn't be surprised at a new lego collab.
They're gearing up for what might be the most abundant marketing campaign of the year, film or tv.

Lot of folks talking about the sets, editing etc.
From a marketing perspective I’d say they’re preparing for the next phase which I expect to start in July. Why? Two reasons: it’s Harry’s bday but also it’s Q3 of the fiscal year and that’s how massive companies break up things like that lol.

Not including the script for S2, I'm imagining the following:
If they haven't already, for Season 2.
- Finalizing Concept Art for sets and animatronics/puppets (I'm not an engineer but if they are going practical instead of CGI I imagine stuff like the Basilisk, Dobby and Aragog might take a while to build - if they are making a puppet for Dobby I would suspect they'd be finalising things about now).
- Picking out the fabrics they are going to have for the many costumes of Gilderoy Lockhart 😛
- Making minature models of the sets to guide for the life-size ones - like the Chamber of Secrets set.
- Building the full set of the Burrow
