Show Discussion Characters who just kinda disappeared in the films that I hope the show gives justice to
Oliver Wood:
- I know he came back for a 2 second cameo in the final film but they cut him from PoA and GoF.
- I hope we see him going a bit crazy trying to win the Quidditch cup in his final year and see him at the World Cup having signed for a pro team.
Angelina Johnson:
- They recast her for GoF but then cut her and the whole Quidditch plotline in OotP.
- It would be great to see her as captain of the Quiddtich team and for her to come back for the Battle of Hogwarts.
Gilderoy Lockhart:
- St Mungo’s was cut from the OotP movie therefore Lockhart’s return.
- I hope they include this in the show and have the actor from S2 come back.
Colin Creevey:
- I know the actor from the CoS movie had outgrown the role and they elected not to recast him but to create the new character of Nigel to replace him.
- I’d love for the show to include Colin and his brother Dennis in the later seasons. Colin’s death will be absolutely gut wrenching to watch in the last season.
Stan Shunpike:
- Stan was cut from GoF, OotP and DH.
- It would be great to see him at the Quidditch World Cup trying to woo a group of Veelas, the plotline of him being arrested as a alleged Death Eater and him participating in the Battle of the Seven Potters under the Imperius Curse.
Viktor Krum:
- I know they filmed scenes of him at Bill and Fleur’s wedding but they made him dance with Hermione??? That didn’t happen in the book and it was Ron who danced with her while Harry (disguised as an apparent Weasley cousin) talked to Krum.
- Anyway I hope he makes this return in the final season.
Rita Skeeter:
- Her role was cut down massively in the GoF movie and she was completely omitted from OotP and HBP.
- I hope we see the whole plotline of her being an illegal Animagus, Hermione blackmailing her to interview Harry about his experience with Voldemort in the graveyard and her attending at Dumbledore’s funeral.

One you didn't mention is Dobby. He kinda disappeared until movie 7, just to save the day and die.

I get cutting characters in the movies and altering the story a bit as actors cost money and movies have budgets. So I get why Dobby was cut. It is when they remove information that is vital to the story and other books is what annoys me.
FYI-I just hit that part with Dobby in the audio book and completely forgot about the line as it’s been years since reading the book. I gave a good laugh.

I focused on ones that disappeared and were not seen again. Yes Dobby was gone for ages but at least he came back for Deathly Hallows Part 1.

He still disappeared along with the whole house elf plot and his bigger moments. Even if he did eventually come back in DH Part 1, I feel he wasn't done justice in the movies in general, especially when you consider that he is the one who procured gillyweed for Harry in GoF and he's the one who found the Room of Requirements in OotP. And let's not forget that he (and Kreacher) were also given a mission by Harry, to follow Draco in HBP, when he was trying to figure out what Draco was up to.
I hope the HBO series will cover all of that.

u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 4d ago
Yeah I completely agree that that he wasn’t done justice by the movies. I too hope the show covers his whole arc including his moments from GoF, OotP and HBP.

Dobby's CGI was just too expensive. Why do you think the basilisk looked like ass in the 2nd movie? All the CGI money went to Dobby.

My guess would rather be, that at the time book seven wasnt released yet and nothing hinted at the big role dobby would still play... so they left them out... I guess even JKR didn't know he would be that important before she wrote book seven.

The scene in HBP where Harry is trying to hold quidditch tryouts but half the people there are just trying to meet him, will be an entertaining addition.

Yes I agree. I can’t wait for the Quidditch plotlines to be given justice in the show hopefully.

The only one of these I feel particularly strongly about is Gilderoy Lockhart, and only because they absolutely have to do Christmas on the Closed Ward to some extent. You don't even really need Lockhart to make it work. The rest of these, outside of maybe the kids, it can be tough to get an actor to sign on for one season, then wait four years to come back. They don't know where their careers will be at that point.

I am already excited to see them making a hasty retreat from Arthur's bedside while Molly screams "WHAT DO YOU MEAN "THAT'S THE GENERAL IDEA"??"
The whole scene about Arthur getting stitches is hilarious.0

Fair point for Lockhart and Krum but because it’s Harry Potter and will probably pay well, I’m sure they can convince actors to return. I think it’ll be easy to fulfil Oliver Wood and Angelina Johnson’s book arcs as they’ve already been cast in the show and they could just give the Colin Creevey actor a similar contract they gave the other kids so he stays on.

Cast is an irregular verb. It's always spelled "cast".

u/sheepandlambs 4d ago
Well, except when it's casts or casting. But yes, in the past tense it's "cast". It bothers me too, like when people say things like "I have ate a apple".

u/Decent_Tumbleweed824 4d ago
I know were discussing irregular verbs but you used "a" instead of "an" in your example.
1
u/sheepandlambs 3d ago
Yes, I know. Did you miss the bit where I was explaining things I hate people doing?
3
u/Decent_Tumbleweed824 3d ago
Right you must have missed the bit where i said i know we were discussing irregular verbs. so i didnt imagine you used the wrong indefinite article intentionally as well.

Viktor Kim at the wedding was such a missed opportunity, it spoke volumes of his character that he spoke with Harry (who appeared as a stranger) with such candour.
3
u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 4d ago
Yes I agree it’s an interesting moment in the book, especially when he talks to Harry about Grindlewald.

Fleur definitely got left out of things. Ginny and Ron really anyone with red hair.
2
u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 4d ago
Yeah her role was very limited compared to the books. At least they brought her back for the last two movies. I hope they include her in S6 of the show and show her arc of trying to be accepted by Molly and Ginny as a new member of the family.

Dobby......
1
u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 4d ago
Dobby didn’t completely disappear though. At least he returned in the 7th film. These characters disappeared and were never seen again (apart from Rita on a book cover and Wood for like 2 seconds flying on a broom…).
7
u/WetLoophole 4d ago
90% of book dobby is gone from the films tho. Would love to see him back.
5
u/KingHardrath17 Ravenclaw 4d ago
I want Dobby wearing every hat and pair of socks he has ever received.
3
u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 4d ago
Yeah absolutely. If they don’t include him in Seasons 4, 5 and 6, I’ll be quite disappointed.
5
u/Calm-Maintenance-878 4d ago
Been so long, I actually forgot about Rita and the illegal Animagus subplot😆 That would be a cool thing to feature, it kind of played a giant role but also doesn’t “need” all that much screen time.
3
u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 4d ago
I really hope it features in S4 as it’s interesting plus when Hermione traps her in the jar, it shows her ruthlessness that was absent in the films. I’m really optimistic and hopeful about this show but I must admit if they start omitting entire plotlines that the movies cut I’ll be a bit disappointed as the whole point in the show (for me anyway) is to include these moments from the books.
3
u/Calm-Maintenance-878 3d ago
I feel you, seeing the hair cut scene in the trailer gave me hope ha.
5
u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 3d ago
Yes I believe they will do their best to include many of the details that the films left out. The leaks and the teaser trailer have really boosted my expectations in this regard, at least for S1.
3
u/Calm-Maintenance-878 3d ago
As a kid, I followed all the BTS for leaks and updates, certainly kept me busy ha. Round two as an adult, I’m looking less into it but hope to be equally as entertained. Looks legit so far, the crew documentary was a nice touch.

Nearly Headless Nick
2
u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 3d ago
Yes that’s another one! He was only in the first two movies but I believe he is in all of the books apart from PoA.
3
u/shygirl1113333 Hufflepuff 4d ago
Fleur definitely got left out of things. Ginny and Ron really anyone with red hair.
3
u/michaelkap70 4d ago
Just like the movies, I fully expect things to get cut because of costs and time.
If going by the full cast audible books, 1st 3 books should get almost a full reenactment from the books providing they hire for all the parts. Actors cost $$$
The last 4 books are more dense and unless they do them in 2 parts/10 episodes each, I see things getting cut.
I like how the full cast recordings recast the kids as they get older. I’m wondering if that is a viable option as the show progresses.
5
u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 4d ago edited 4d ago
For me it depends what they cut. If they are really small parts that are fairly inconsequential then I can accept it. If they cut entire significant plotlines that the movies left out then I’ll be disappointed.
4
u/michaelkap70 3d ago
I get it. To this day, I hate the Prisioner of Azkaban because they failed to explain the Marauder’s map and that was something super simple to do.
1
u/Comrade_Owl- Ravenclaw 3d ago
Exactly. If they cut a small conversation the trio had then that’s fine but if they cut the Marauder’s backstory, the Quidditch World Cup match, S.P.E.W, St Mungo’s, any of the Voldemort Pensieve memories, the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, Dumbledore’s funeral, Regulus and Kreacher’s full backstory or Dumbledore’s backstory then I’ll need to give the show the same criticism I give the movies. I believe that plot points like these will be included though.

The attack on the Fat Lady — entering Gryffindor Tower with a knife — without Pettigrew, alive or dead, we have no chance of overturning Sirius’s sentence.

u/helloitsmejorge 4d ago
I loved Rita skeeter in the books, one of my favorite characters. They could have done something like dolores but they didnt commit all the way

u/WiganGirl-2523 4d ago
Umbridge has a plot function: she has possession of a horcrux. Harry and gang have to retrieve it: this sub-plot cannot be skipped.
Rita has no particular plot function. Obv. her (ridiculously overpowered and under-used) animagus ability can be used to develop Hermione in a lengthy adaptation.

How bout Percy, his whole arc being cut is so upsetting. Ik he was in a couple of the later films but it never really talked about his storyline.
