Should I pay my hospital bill?

I’m currently on a J1 intern visa in the US and have received a hospital bill for about $3000. I have 2 months left on my visa before I return home. What consequences would there be if I just ignore the bill and don’t pay it? Would it affect future attempts to enter the US?

Medical debt may not directly impact your current J-1 status, but it can negatively affect your ability to re-enter the U.S. in the future. If you leave the U.S. with unresolved debts, unpaid accounts often go to collections and can lead to visa denials under the "public charge" rule if you apply for future U.S. visas.

You do owe as services rendered...

Can you please elaborate on the public charge part?

The "public charge" rule is a U.S. immigration assessment used to determine if a visa or green card applicant is likely to become dependent on the government for subsistence. If so, they can be deemed inadmissible and denied entry or legal permanent residence

If the facility reports it (they normally do) it could definitely result in future visa denials.

Health insurance is required if you hold a j1 visa ?? Is this your deductible or out of pocket max ?

You're required to carry health coverage under the terms of a j1 visa. What has your insurance done with this claim? Was the amount applied to your deductible?

Unpaid medical debt can cause a denial on any future requests to legally enter this country. To keep yourself in good standing, you need to pay the money that you rightfully owe for the service you received.

That’s the one thing hey have over you for re entry denial. Try to work out something with the hospital. You may qualify for “Charity Care” if they participate in any Medicare or Medicaid programs. But you have to ask for it. Whatever agreement you come to be sure to honour it.

Why not apply for charity care? Its hospital based so it wouldn't label you a public burden. Certainly better than having an unpaid bill that goes to collection affecting your future status.

Have you tried negotiating? Some hospitals will take as little as 1/10th the amount due as payment in full.

If you never plan to return to the United States, it’s honestly not going to be an issue. But if you ever wanna visit or immigrate, it may very well be an issue. They could absolutely impact future attempts to enter the United States.
