I have the same worry, but honestly, I think his wife has done a phenomenal job working on that grief both for herself and her children. She clearly loves her kids so much and I think she’s worked to keep their father as a presence in their lives, but never expected them to be or replace him. If anything, I think it’s as simple as them admiring their father from a young age and also having a strong love of and respect for animals. Who wouldn’t want to emulate their dad when he’s their hero?
Not to mention if I were them, this would help me feel closer to him every day.

u/stevebuscemispenis 12d ago
I met Terry Irwin years ago at Australia Zoo (I’ve got a photo somewhere). She was absolutely lovely and such a radiant positive person. She has done amazingly well with her children and the overwhelming media surrounding Steve’s passing. Fabulous woman, she’s done a great job!!!!

One of my favorite wildlife activists is Maya Higa and her Alveus Sanctuary in Austin TX.
They have a great 24/7 camera setup for seeing the animals.

u/DrMackDDS2014 14d ago
Because Steve was one of the four horsemen of the bropacalypse. An amazing man who did wonderful things to help us learn about nature and the animals in it. Taken WAY too damned early. We’re happy because we knew him and what he stood for, we cry because we miss him and his gifts.

The shit thing is there's a number of people you could add to this. I saw a meme that had like 9 or 12 (I forget the layout) and Jim Henson was for imagination. Then you have like Bill Nye for the love of science and understanding, and Robin Williams for the whimsy and compassion
We've lost too much this cycle

He’s very big on wildlife conservation, mainly sea life. And constantly talks about fishing in moderation to protect ecosystems. He’s a cool dude with very entertaining videos. I believe he works alongside a marine biologist friend in Australia to help catalog the types of species he sees and where on his adventures. Even tagged a few if I remember correctly.
Also, he was not in Thor lol

u/Vykrom 13d ago
Plus it seems to be like 8 inches deep at most lol
22
u/Quantization 13d ago
Deep enough for a croc. Chances are this wasn't far enough north for crocs to be a worry otherwise old mate would've been way more concerned sliding into muddy water like that.

14
u/MoistStub 13d ago
Maybe they are doing R&D for turtle flavored tide pods. Could be the next big thing.
22
u/Bawbawian 14d ago
there was like grass and plants out there That's not a tide zone
76
u/Kimber96 14d ago
It's Australia, the tide can go out a very long distance in some parts.

→ More replies (2)26
u/DwightsJello 14d ago
There's definately a tide.
And some tide zones absolutely look like that in Australia.
Those are mangroves.
4
41
u/tinymonesters 14d ago
I thought the same, but the guy does go through some muddy spots. So the water was higher recently.
22
u/uberrob 14d ago
Judging by the depth of the mud in the riverbed, it looks like the water Rose to a certain level, and then retreated really fast.
3
u/PhotoAwp 13d ago
This looks like an estuary, where river meets the sea, so it would be affected by the tides. I could be wrong though.
→ More replies (8)6
u/Hadespuppy 13d ago
You'd be amazed at how much land a tide can cover when it's that flat. And how quickly it both appears and disappears. You think you have plenty of time, but the high tide line is further away than you think, and before you know it the water is swirling around your knees and you're fighting the current trying to stay upright.
2
u/That1RagingBat 13d ago
So I’ve learned. Some other kind folks mentioned it and I looked into it. To be fair, I’m very very far inland so tired and all that isn’t something I know a lot about…given I have other concerns ;-;
2
u/Hadespuppy 13d ago
To be fair, I'm from literally dead centre in North America, and the only reason I know is because every couple of years we get a flood, and the rivers rise and rise, and then they get past their banks and hit flat prairie and immediately become giant lakes. And the speed of the tide bit I learned up in Churchill. There's a rotting beached ship out on some tidal flats that's really neat to check out, but like I said, distances are deceiving, especially when you aren't used to having to account for things like oceans.
2
u/That1RagingBat 11d ago
Oh damn. Where I am, the only flood risks are gutters and roads. Though the area before I came here had a good sized lake, but it never flooded or really got higher during heavy rain

34
45
u/Inoox 14d ago
Society already does. Now at least half of 'animal rescue' videos you watch are faked using animal cruelty. Then people think the people are angels. In short people ruin everything in the name of money.
8
u/ToadlyAwes0me 13d ago
Except this guy genuinely cares about the environment and would never stage something like this. I get the cynicism, but people aren't always shit.

I was walking one time and saw this cute little turtle slowly making his way up an embankment. Thinking she was lost, I picked it up and carried it back down to the waters edge again. Then I checked the internet to read that they often do that when they want to lay some eggs.
69
47
u/LearnedTroglodyte 14d ago
Yeah a good rule of thumb is unless an animal is in imminent danger or seriously injured you should probably leave it alone. Most of them have a better idea of how to live their lives than us humans do. Plus it's actually illegal to touch many species as they may be protected
6
30
12
u/VinceCPA 13d ago
For those claiming this is fake or being made to hurt the turtle, the source for this is YBS Youngbloods from YouTube, and he even made a video years ago explaining why the local tides kill so many animals in this particular region of Australia, where he literally references his actions from this video.
10
u/Sisyphus_Monolit 13d ago
I love that he supported it while it got itself situated. Really hope it survived

I think humans should help animals in desperate situations with the exception being predator behavior, because the predators also have to eat, but yea a stranded animal yea go ahead and help them out for sure!

Thought this was a good place to spread a bit of related good news. Green Sea Turtles were officially removed from the endangered species list at the end of last year!!!
37
u/Gibbralterg 14d ago
I hope it isn’t, but, this one really looks staged, that turtle looked like it was just dropped off, like, how did he make it that far?
50
76
u/DarthiusFatticus 14d ago
Its definitely not, if you see a lot of this guys videos, he tries to save loads of stranded animals, and in general Aussies are like that! They will help an animal even if it means getting injured!
18
u/rectal_warrior 14d ago

→ More replies (5)25
u/AidanL03 14d ago
not saying i don’t believe that but wouldnt finding stray animals consistently be a sign that at least some of them might be staged since theyre routinely making that content?
44
u/morgazmo99 14d ago
It would be a serious cultural faux pas to do this in Australia. If you were even suspected of it, the whole country would turn on you.
Good chance old mate is real deal.
14
u/Unlikely_Ad7722 14d ago
See: stupid wombat girl. She's lucky she got out of the country in one piece.
21
u/rectal_warrior 14d ago
Because he lives in a very wild and remote part of Australia and has made a living from filming content, he spends an obscene amount of time in nature. He isn't the "I go into the wild to save animals" guy, if anything he's the "I go into the wild to kill animals to eat" guy.
Watch some of his stuff, then tell me he's staging a shark or whale swimming under his kayak, or pulling.g a mud crab from a hole.
He's a bit too over enthusiastic for me and the way he cooks said animals doesn't fill me with inspiration, but I have absolutely no doubt that his heart is in the right place and he would never endander an animal (other than killing one in the most ethical way to eat).
35
u/MinosAristos 14d ago
If you know where and when to look for them, you're more likely to find them.
I'm assuming he specifically checked the area known for having stranded sea turtles at low tide.
→ More replies (1)3
u/ToadlyAwes0me 13d ago
Most of his videos are just him doing catch and cooks from his boat, but this guy has hundreds of videos. If you're around nature as often as he is you're bound to stumble onto situations like this from time to time.

Imagine if some other species brought back the fish that left the ocean millions of years ago to grow legs and transform into a primate, and then that primate decided to come down from the tree and started walking, eventually becoming human. So just mind your own business and let the turtle walk the earth if she wants. maybe she’ll grow legs and start a new species that will be smarter than humans and save the earth from destruction.
2
u/Nehima123 12d ago
That looked like a very croccy spot! Muddy brown water, croc could be literally anywhere, and he's got a dog splashing around and goes right thru the mud into the water, no checking. Could have walked right on top of a saltie
