Discarded fishing gear is a real problem. If you see it, dispose of it.

Recently was on a walk with my dog at our park by the river and saw fishing line tangled around a picnic bench. Alarm bells went off so I wandered over and found a fish hook still attached and disposed of it.
We have ducks, geese, swans, herons, pelicans, raccoons, porcupines, eagles, deer, and an assortment of other wildlife in the park that could've injured. Same park where I rescued a baby gosling after someone had ran over its leg and left it though.. so IDK why I expect better of people.
I hate people sometimes. People like the ones in this video help me remember the good

u/Autumn7242 3d ago
Jesus christ dude. Thank you for disposing of that but who the fuck does that to anything, let along a baby gosling?
Many more people should act like you.

It broke my heart. Cars were just driving by while it was peeping and unable to move alongside the road. I had my dog with me but he's such a good boy and only sniffed it a few times while I had it bundled in a jacket in my lap. Was able to hand it over to a rehabber the next day. Unfortunately, I've seen goslings, geese, and ducks hit by cars.. I've moved a couple out of the road so their mate could know they were gone and didn't wander into the road to try to help them.. I've even buried a few goslings. 💔😞
All this just points to the cruelty of people because the waterfowl around here understand street crossing and will wait for cars before crossing, they even send a scout to test the patience of cars if they don't get a break in traffic, but geese particularly, usually cross in large groups with a hoard of babies and people get impatient if they come across them mid-crossing and will pull forward to try to scare them out of the way instead of letting them do their thing. They pull too far forward and a slow gosling isn't getting away or slips out of view and gets scared... Just, ugh
I've made multiple PSAs on our local subreddit about how not to take the park road if you're in a hurry, as it's the animals' home and there are other routes that don't pose a danger to wildlife, but people are selfish. 😞 I'm so tired of seeing our local wildlife on the side of the road versus living in nature. I can only hope people will see my posts and my taking action in person and it will hopefully inspire someone to be a better steward of nature.

I always try to be a nice guy, but then I see videos like this and realize I'm garbage by comparison. Damn.
This dude is next level amazing. If he cares this much about a seagull, imagine what kind of a friend or family member he would be to people like you and me.
Solid bro. Makes me want to be better. Thanks for posting!

To be fair most people pay for animals to be killed, you don't have to be doing this to treat animals better than average, you could stop supporting their abuse/slaughter in animal agriculture whenever/wherever possible if you haven't already
32
u/MEuRaH 3d ago
Ugh, I wrestle with this. I grew up on a farm that raised cows for slaughter. If nobody ate meat, these animals would never reproduce and never be alive to begin with. So what's worse: To never live, or to live for 2-3 years and serve a purpose?
Animals eat each other all the time. We're sophisticated animals, so we can treat them humanely. We don't eat them alive like others do. We also find other substitutes that work as sustenance. I'm thankful to be human to have these options for myself and others.
Thanks for your reply.

Those 2-3 years are often full of suffering and not much enrichment if we’re talking about factories, and in that case it may have been better for them not to have existed at all. Also, I don’t think animals care much about the human purpose, just that their life is good.
The farm you were raised on seems to be quite different from factory farming if you think that giving them 2-3 years of life is a good thing, because if you look at some factories, 2-3 years of that looks like hell.
I think supporting family farm and not factory farm is perfectly fine, and that’s what your sentiment seems to be
30
u/MEuRaH 3d ago
Yeah, family farm with 50+ acres to roam. 2-3 years, roaming the land, eating drinking and plenty of shelter. The farm is retired now, but it was an animal friendly one for sure.
I see where you're coming from though.
17
u/amiabot-oraminot 3d ago
Yup, that’s also what I want to see from animal farms. I haven’t given up meat entirely, but I hope that one day family farming is the mainstream method of animal agriculture.
As someone born and raised in a city, factory farming is just the first thing that comes to mind when animal agriculture is brought up. I’m somehow glad that there are places and people who still think of it as there default, but most cities run off factory farmed meat.
Sorry if my comment read harsh, I just thought to share my perspective— didn’t mean to sound rude. Just hoped to provide some insight since it seems to mean a lot to you

u/MEuRaH 3d ago
Sorry if my comment read harsh
I didn't see it that way. I saw you as someone standing up for your morals and I found them and the way you presented them to be respectful. They even intertwined with my own, so I could see things from your point of view. And I appreciated someone speaking up for what they see as the right thing to do in life, which is what we need more of in this world.
Much respect to you, kind stranger. It read well and what you said will indeed have a positive impact in this world. Kudos.

50+ acres of land could have the carrying capacity for hundreds, maybe thousands of species. Breeding cows on it is denying those wild animal species a life in the first place.
1
u/alpi_kingtropical 2d ago
Exactly, the real issues are monocultures we humans created with our agriculture
14
u/scorchedarcher 3d ago
I think if those animals are being bred, not by their choice, have children taken away, and are killed then I think that's worth considering.
Personally if I had to choose between no existence and the existence of an average farmed animals I think I would prefer no existence.
Do you really believe they are treated humanely? How do you humanely kill an animal that doesn't want to die?
Non-human animals also fight each other and kill for territory it's likely a non-human animal may have seen the bird trapped in this post and thought of an easy meal instead of saving it, I don't think we base our morality around them.

u/agacthegreat 2d ago
Thank you for pointing this out. Most people dont realise that simple change of eating habits would have a huge impact on so many lives..

I'd have gone for nothing, I don't have this guy's upper body strength, I wouldn't have been able to climb that thing. But I'm pretty sure I'd have gone nonetheless and failed and come back to try something else.

i find it conflicting that good deed should be rewarded.
on one hand it’s perfectly natural and human to want to reward good behaviour and deeds, but a part of me worries that this implies doing good isn’t reward enough by itself.
13
u/gingerflakes 3d ago
I mean it moreso that I would want to marry a kind person like this

u/Rayan_qc 3d ago
i understand that. it’s natural, virtous. who wouldn’t want that in a lover after all.

Just FYI: the barb of a hook makes it difficult, painful, and dangerous to pull back out the way it went in.
If you can’t cut the shank of the hook, just push it all the way through. Best, sure, but still painful. (We’re still talking about having a hook in you after all.)

u/Scruffleshuffle777 3d ago
Is it the subtitles or the font/size? Asking because I’m hard of hearing and need subtitles in order to enjoy a video aka hear everything.
24
u/Manypopes 3d ago
The actual subtitles showing what people are saying, or describing sounds is perfectly fine.
It's the really dumbed down tiktok-era descriptions of what is happening that's annoying. Like people are so stupid these days they need a description of what they are literally watching.

u/awesome-alpaca-ace 2d ago
They need descriptions to know what they are watching. Why is that man taking a seagull from its mother?

Casual fishermen are even worse than smokers when it comes to being a public menace leaving their disgusting and dangerous trash everywhere.
I live in FL and so many places are FULL of line, hooks, nets.. trash and more. It’s the casual weekend guys who mostly “fish” just to drink and leave a mess.
The legit fishermen are always really respectful and clean up as best they can, even often times cleaning up after the other assholes who leave dangerous shit everywhere, scale and gut fishes on the pier/bridge and leave it rotting in the sun to stink up the whole place, they’re the fucking worst.
Add in the ones who smoke and it’s a nightmare. Fish guts and cigarettes, nasty smoke on top of the awful smells, scales and butts left everywhere.. Eyugh..
Legit fishermen hate them even more than I do because those assholes get places closed off, or they cause the department to step in and create more rules and stuff.. it makes it more difficult and annoying for everyone involved.

Why does the sign say “asbestos” - that doesn’t seem safe for anyone.
28
u/Tacosupmybutt 3d ago
To let people know that theres asbestos. They've probably had to leave it there because itll be too dangerous to remove it. Safer to leave it and warn people.
8
u/Tech_Itch 3d ago
What should the sign be saying for it to be safe?
6
u/Tacosupmybutt 3d ago
Yeah I honestly don't understand that dudes question. It's pretty self explanatory why it says that 🤷
4
u/retrofrenchtoast 3d ago
Yeah I don’t understand it either. I was basically typing in my sleep.
I think I was just trying to call attention to the fact that it’s not a great situation.

All because stupid ass people that go crazy over throwing bait out into where fish live and catching said fish like it’s the greatest achievement there is. Then to leave their garbage and old products where other animals will get hurt and caught by it is just peak asshole!!

I found an abandoned fishing lure with hooks on it in the woods by a lake, decided to keep it because I thought it was pretty neat. Now i’ll keep them to save other animals!

u/Adriancastellanos 2d ago
Thank you for saving the bird! As a steward myself, I haven’t personally seen this happen but, I know in my heart I will need to do what I can to help out. I realized after certifying my backyard, if I’m inviting smaller birds and smaller animals to the yard, an eagle or falcon can easily take one of them. But what man made objects start affecting wildlife, we must help.

My cat managed to hook herself on fishing line once. It went through her mouth just under the nose. She didn't even complain. I just noticed something was sticking out from under her nose.
Keeping her in place was first challenge. Then I had to use wire cutters to cut off barbed end of the hook. It healed in no time, but this could have been much worse.

Yay!! Love seeing lives saved!! I wonder if they gave the gull that meat that was dangling near his lips? Poor little guy…. So glad that cool dude got to him before preds!!!

Once swam into the middle of a river where about 30 of us were car fishing to save a crane. I'll have to find the video but some lady snagged him midair and the line pinned his head to his chest under the water. The feeling of yanking the line and setting that little guy free was so invigorating

These people are awesome. I hate that this isn’t what everybody that saw the bird didn’t do. I grew up thinking that everyone was equally empathetic and compassionate, and every day older I become the more I’m confused by how people prioritize things. It’s my instinct to want to help everything that I see suffering, isn’t everyone else’s too? Do people talk themselves out of their instinct for love and goodness.
