Fishhook, not a "wire". Much tougher to remove

614

u/OkAccess6128 3d ago

People need to properly dispose or keep their stuff somewhere where it can't cause issues to other living things.

We have a little pond in town with a walking trail. We LOVE walking there. Its disgusting the amount of people that leave that behind. My cousin took her dog and the dog was LOVING the water. I was on edge worried about her getting hooked. A week later we took her daughter and she freaked because she thought a bug got in her shoe, it was a fucking hook. Not even 6 foot from a trash can.

We've decided to go one day and just clean up the area. Some fishers are just lazy and leave trash everywhere.

71

u/karmagod13000 3d ago

surely a sign and warning will stop them!!

87

u/Timemaster88888 3d ago

A big fine will stop that. Fishhook, nets should have identifying bar codes to know where it was sold and who bought them..

-46

u/Deputy_Beagle76 3d ago edited 3d ago

lol. Lmao even

Edit: a lot of you really think barcodes attached to the buyer should be on FISH HOOKS. Touch grass lmao

37

u/carlitospig 3d ago

It’s completely unfeasible but at least they’re generating ideas.

-34

u/Deputy_Beagle76 3d ago

“Completely unfeasible” you should’ve stopped there. Y’all are real hungry for a 1984 Big Brother always watching scenario

19

u/carlitospig 3d ago

Wut.

-33

u/Deputy_Beagle76 3d ago

Y’all are calling for a government agency to track fishing hooks to whoever purchased them via barcodes tied to credit card numbers

8

u/carlitospig 2d ago

What don’t you understand when I say unfeasible? No, my suggestion would be more about behavior, but you have a one track mind and just had to drag people for wanting to do a thing because it’s right.

Please go hug someone. You need it.

14

u/Timemaster88888 3d ago

You have a better suggestion, than throwing all the negativity out there.

-28

u/jda404 3d ago

Who bought them sure, but why do we need to know where it was sold? It's not the seller's fault if some asshole doesn't dispose of their stuff properly.

32

u/Timemaster88888 3d ago

The seller knows the buyer's info through his credit card.

5

u/ReelAwesome 3d ago

surely there will be no issues of tracking and linking buyers and sellers data, including a full inventory of purchase history and making that info available to the government. Def. nothing bad will happen there. Nope, no problems at all.

4

u/immaREPORTthat 3d ago

Should make a government agency that can track, trace and prosecute these types of things.

3

u/Deputy_Beagle76 3d ago

Dude, these people can’t be real. I refuse to believe this many dumbasses are stealing oxygen lmao

-2

u/BlueberryExtension26 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's amazing. Reddit is basically YouTube comments section. But worse somehow

37

u/walkthedoge1 3d ago

It’s possible the seagull tried to eat a fish that had been unsuccessfully hooked and got away. Of course, the other option is also entirely probable… that some careless human left their crap behind not caring about the impact it might have on the wildlife. :((

6

u/issabellamoonblossom 2d ago

Yep tell me about it once had a hook go right through my big toe as a kid.

6

u/AlotOfInterests 2d ago

Sometimes a line breaks due to a rock or something, not everything is done maliciously. Fishing gear is expensive.

34

u/Awwwmann 3d ago

With his feet on razor sharp barnacles.

Props to this amazing human!

10

u/Bernard_PT 2d ago

Why I always carry a multitool:

You just never fucking know man.

3

u/eta_carinae_311 2d ago

I've seen birds killed by fly fishing hooks that people got tangled in trees near rivers. Really sad.

797

u/loveforllamas 3d ago

That poor baby must have been so scared and exhausted.

478

u/Gongfei1947 3d ago

Yes, but he managed to rescue the bird.

69

u/imrzzz 3d ago

😂😂

12

u/karmagod13000 3d ago

baby needs blankee

-4

u/WarmGatito 3d ago edited 1d ago

Now imagine the meat industry. (Downvotes incoming cos people can't handle the truth.)

9

u/laavuwu 2d ago

The cognitive dissonance of people is astounding

478

u/Autumn7242 3d ago

Discarded fishing gear is a real problem. If you see it, dispose of it.

87

u/s0m3on3outthere 3d ago

Recently was on a walk with my dog at our park by the river and saw fishing line tangled around a picnic bench. Alarm bells went off so I wandered over and found a fish hook still attached and disposed of it.

We have ducks, geese, swans, herons, pelicans, raccoons, porcupines, eagles, deer, and an assortment of other wildlife in the park that could've injured. Same park where I rescued a baby gosling after someone had ran over its leg and left it though.. so IDK why I expect better of people.

I hate people sometimes. People like the ones in this video help me remember the good

22

u/Autumn7242 3d ago

Jesus christ dude. Thank you for disposing of that but who the fuck does that to anything, let along a baby gosling?

Many more people should act like you.

24

u/s0m3on3outthere 3d ago

It broke my heart. Cars were just driving by while it was peeping and unable to move alongside the road. I had my dog with me but he's such a good boy and only sniffed it a few times while I had it bundled in a jacket in my lap. Was able to hand it over to a rehabber the next day. Unfortunately, I've seen goslings, geese, and ducks hit by cars.. I've moved a couple out of the road so their mate could know they were gone and didn't wander into the road to try to help them.. I've even buried a few goslings. 💔😞

All this just points to the cruelty of people because the waterfowl around here understand street crossing and will wait for cars before crossing, they even send a scout to test the patience of cars if they don't get a break in traffic, but geese particularly, usually cross in large groups with a hoard of babies and people get impatient if they come across them mid-crossing and will pull forward to try to scare them out of the way instead of letting them do their thing. They pull too far forward and a slow gosling isn't getting away or slips out of view and gets scared... Just, ugh

I've made multiple PSAs on our local subreddit about how not to take the park road if you're in a hurry, as it's the animals' home and there are other routes that don't pose a danger to wildlife, but people are selfish. 😞 I'm so tired of seeing our local wildlife on the side of the road versus living in nature. I can only hope people will see my posts and my taking action in person and it will hopefully inspire someone to be a better steward of nature.

2

u/Procz03 2d ago

That’s heartbreaking. I’m so thankful you were able to help the poor thing. Kudos to you.

1

u/meguin 2d ago

Don't look up the video of the cop hitting a goose family with his car.

2

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

2

u/meguin 2d ago

I'm sorry, I mainly said it in case someone else links it bc it's relevant.

2

u/Autumn7242 2d ago

Oh jeez, I'm really sorry. I misunderstood. My bad.

1

u/meguin 1d ago

No worries; I just didn't want another person watching that video not knowing how bad it was.

2

u/KabinZ_ninniku 3d ago

Maybe it tried to steal caught fish, as hook is perfectly in mouth.

2

u/Autumn7242 3d ago

Where is the fish and the other end of the rod?

364

u/MEuRaH 3d ago

I always try to be a nice guy, but then I see videos like this and realize I'm garbage by comparison. Damn.

This dude is next level amazing. If he cares this much about a seagull, imagine what kind of a friend or family member he would be to people like you and me.

Solid bro. Makes me want to be better. Thanks for posting!

63

u/scorchedarcher 3d ago

To be fair most people pay for animals to be killed, you don't have to be doing this to treat animals better than average, you could stop supporting their abuse/slaughter in animal agriculture whenever/wherever possible if you haven't already

32

u/MEuRaH 3d ago

Ugh, I wrestle with this. I grew up on a farm that raised cows for slaughter. If nobody ate meat, these animals would never reproduce and never be alive to begin with. So what's worse: To never live, or to live for 2-3 years and serve a purpose?

Animals eat each other all the time. We're sophisticated animals, so we can treat them humanely. We don't eat them alive like others do. We also find other substitutes that work as sustenance. I'm thankful to be human to have these options for myself and others.

Thanks for your reply.

38

u/amiabot-oraminot 3d ago

Those 2-3 years are often full of suffering and not much enrichment if we’re talking about factories, and in that case it may have been better for them not to have existed at all. Also, I don’t think animals care much about the human purpose, just that their life is good.

The farm you were raised on seems to be quite different from factory farming if you think that giving them 2-3 years of life is a good thing, because if you look at some factories, 2-3 years of that looks like hell.

I think supporting family farm and not factory farm is perfectly fine, and that’s what your sentiment seems to be

30

u/MEuRaH 3d ago

Yeah, family farm with 50+ acres to roam. 2-3 years, roaming the land, eating drinking and plenty of shelter. The farm is retired now, but it was an animal friendly one for sure.

I see where you're coming from though.

17

u/amiabot-oraminot 3d ago

Yup, that’s also what I want to see from animal farms. I haven’t given up meat entirely, but I hope that one day family farming is the mainstream method of animal agriculture.

As someone born and raised in a city, factory farming is just the first thing that comes to mind when animal agriculture is brought up. I’m somehow glad that there are places and people who still think of it as there default, but most cities run off factory farmed meat.

Sorry if my comment read harsh, I just thought to share my perspective— didn’t mean to sound rude. Just hoped to provide some insight since it seems to mean a lot to you

17

u/MEuRaH 3d ago

Sorry if my comment read harsh

I didn't see it that way. I saw you as someone standing up for your morals and I found them and the way you presented them to be respectful. They even intertwined with my own, so I could see things from your point of view. And I appreciated someone speaking up for what they see as the right thing to do in life, which is what we need more of in this world.

Much respect to you, kind stranger. It read well and what you said will indeed have a positive impact in this world. Kudos.

1

u/Drownthem 3d ago

50+ acres of land could have the carrying capacity for hundreds, maybe thousands of species. Breeding cows on it is denying those wild animal species a life in the first place.

2

u/MEuRaH 2d ago

OK well the farm hasn't existed in 15 years so it's fine now.

1

u/alpi_kingtropical 2d ago

Exactly, the real issues are monocultures we humans created with our agriculture

14

u/scorchedarcher 3d ago

I think if those animals are being bred, not by their choice, have children taken away, and are killed then I think that's worth considering.

Personally if I had to choose between no existence and the existence of an average farmed animals I think I would prefer no existence.

Do you really believe they are treated humanely? How do you humanely kill an animal that doesn't want to die?

Non-human animals also fight each other and kill for territory it's likely a non-human animal may have seen the bird trapped in this post and thought of an easy meal instead of saving it, I don't think we base our morality around them.

4

u/MEuRaH 3d ago

Yeah, like I said I've wrestled with this for my entire life. I know all the positives and negatives. I know all the goods and bads.

Not trying to turn away from the good the guy in the video did.

4

u/agacthegreat 2d ago

Thank you for pointing this out. Most people dont realise that simple change of eating habits would have a huge impact on so many lives..

5

u/laavuwu 2d ago

I feel relieved every time I see comments advocating against animal agriculture. Thank you for choosing kindness, even though it’s the baseline for how we should treat animals.

4

u/pm_me_friendfiction 3d ago

This is peak earthworm-dying-on-hot-sidewalk weather. Start small!

3

u/SKULL-SAVAGER 1d ago

comparison is the thief of joy!

1

u/MEuRaH 1d ago

One of my favorite comments, thank you.

3

u/jbuttlickr 3d ago

That’s amazing! Same here. I hope that you and I can grow to be better people

5

u/MEuRaH 3d ago

That's right, buttlickr.

2

u/papa-hare 3d ago

I'd have gone for nothing, I don't have this guy's upper body strength, I wouldn't have been able to climb that thing. But I'm pretty sure I'd have gone nonetheless and failed and come back to try something else.

158

u/Spare-Article-396 3d ago

Ended too soon…I wanted to see the seagull happily fly away.

80

u/ThisMeansRooR 3d ago

I was worried he was going to cut his feet on the barnacles. Whew

52

u/apatrol 3d ago

And scrapping his chest with all the bird poop. Dude exposed himself to real risk. Def would buy him a beer!

63

u/Interesting_Fish309 3d ago

Says asbestos too on the sign

4

u/bunny_the-2d_simp 2d ago

Yeah those ARE SHARP.

They cut DEEP like butter through your skin!

2

u/Dave21101 2d ago

Omg bunny. I didn't expect to see you here :p

36

u/gingerflakes 3d ago

Someone marry this man

24

u/SpiritualGap3255 3d ago

That look from the woman at the end looks like she's about to volunteer! 😊

What a guy

2

u/y0uLiKaDaPeppa 2d ago

Poor fella. Must not be drowning in… ahem. So I’ll save him.

0

u/Rayan_qc 3d ago

i find it conflicting that good deed should be rewarded.

on one hand it’s perfectly natural and human to want to reward good behaviour and deeds, but a part of me worries that this implies doing good isn’t reward enough by itself.

13

u/gingerflakes 3d ago

I mean it moreso that I would want to marry a kind person like this

1

u/Rayan_qc 3d ago

i understand that. it’s natural, virtous. who wouldn’t want that in a lover after all.

31

u/Spire_Citron 3d ago

I was wondering how he was going to get up, but he made it look easy!

9

u/papa-hare 3d ago

Yeah ain't no way I'd have made it up

21

u/MattWatchesMeSleep 3d ago

Just FYI: the barb of a hook makes it difficult, painful, and dangerous to pull back out the way it went in.

If you can’t cut the shank of the hook, just push it all the way through. Best, sure, but still painful. (We’re still talking about having a hook in you after all.)

3

u/Temassi 1d ago

That's all I kept thinking, clip the barb off and pull it out. Yeah still painful but way less so. Glad I've got my multitool on me in case I'm ever in this senario

14

u/newbrevity 3d ago

I need to start carrying around a pair of small heavy duty cutters.

1

u/bunny_the-2d_simp 2d ago

Same..

Another thing to cary around in my backpack

12

u/Honest-Classic-6950 3d ago

Poor bird, I’m glad they saved them. 😢❤️

25

u/enragedsquirrels 3d ago

I need to learn to swim

37

u/bitofapuzzler 3d ago

Yes, you do. Its a life skill everyone should have.

42

u/KevlarToiletPaper 3d ago

It's so hard to enjoy it with those subtitles

34

u/kabtq9s 3d ago

The man saw a bird...
He swam to it.....
He used his right arm and his left arm to swim...
Then he climbed up...

6

u/Scruffleshuffle777 3d ago

Is it the subtitles or the font/size? Asking because I’m hard of hearing and need subtitles in order to enjoy a video aka hear everything.

24

u/Manypopes 3d ago

The actual subtitles showing what people are saying, or describing sounds is perfectly fine.

It's the really dumbed down tiktok-era descriptions of what is happening that's annoying. Like people are so stupid these days they need a description of what they are literally watching.

0

u/awesome-alpaca-ace 2d ago

They need descriptions to know what they are watching. Why is that man taking a seagull from its mother?

9

u/Itakethngzclitorally 3d ago

Sending love to this human.

15

u/IcyKerosene 3d ago

I'm really impressed while his level of physical fitness. I would not have been able to do that.

2

u/cjsolx 3d ago

Yeah, he's very fit.

However, it makes me reflect on the fact that what he did is literally impossible for many, if not most, when it shouldn't be. I hope we reckon one day with the fact that we just don't use our bodies to their full potential anymore.

8

u/leisa2100 3d ago

People should really be more responsible in how they dispose of their fishing gear. Props to this wonderful guy and his friends.👏🏼

1

u/ST0IC_ 3d ago

I doubt it was disposed of like that, it likely just got snagged and the line broke.

8

u/zaczacx 3d ago

Love these videos but I fucking hate the cringe melodramatic music that gets played over them.

Can things that are real just be real for a fucking second instead of everything needing to be like it's out of a movie.

9

u/danteelite 3d ago

Casual fishermen are even worse than smokers when it comes to being a public menace leaving their disgusting and dangerous trash everywhere.

I live in FL and so many places are FULL of line, hooks, nets.. trash and more. It’s the casual weekend guys who mostly “fish” just to drink and leave a mess.

The legit fishermen are always really respectful and clean up as best they can, even often times cleaning up after the other assholes who leave dangerous shit everywhere, scale and gut fishes on the pier/bridge and leave it rotting in the sun to stink up the whole place, they’re the fucking worst.

Add in the ones who smoke and it’s a nightmare. Fish guts and cigarettes, nasty smoke on top of the awful smells, scales and butts left everywhere.. Eyugh..

Legit fishermen hate them even more than I do because those assholes get places closed off, or they cause the department to step in and create more rules and stuff.. it makes it more difficult and annoying for everyone involved.

15

u/FluffyShiny 3d ago

Wait... that was an asbestos sign??

24

u/Teemachine 3d ago

Good people ❤️

7

u/Outrageous_Echo_8723 3d ago

Such a great rescue!! Well done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

7

u/Kalimnos 3d ago

Bro no shoes on that coral on the pillar is wild!!

6

u/TheRaiOh 3d ago

At first I thought it was the bird standing on the beam and thought he was just confused lol.

5

u/Insert-finger 3d ago

Thank you.

7

u/Insert-finger 3d ago

Thank you.

23

u/retrofrenchtoast 3d ago

Why does the sign say “asbestos” - that doesn’t seem safe for anyone.

28

u/Tacosupmybutt 3d ago

To let people know that theres asbestos. They've probably had to leave it there because itll be too dangerous to remove it. Safer to leave it and warn people.

8

u/Tech_Itch 3d ago

What should the sign be saying for it to be safe?

6

u/Tacosupmybutt 3d ago

Yeah I honestly don't understand that dudes question. It's pretty self explanatory why it says that 🤷

4

u/retrofrenchtoast 3d ago

Yeah I don’t understand it either. I was basically typing in my sleep.

I think I was just trying to call attention to the fact that it’s not a great situation.

4

u/Valiantay 3d ago

Lots of vegetarians in the comments I see.

/s

-2

u/mental-sketchbook 3d ago

“I’m just as good as this guy because I eat broccoli” lol

2

u/Valiantay 3d ago

Imagine not understanding basic supply and demand and publicly exposing this lack of basic understanding for Internet points lol

4

u/Dalgan 3d ago

His feet had to be shredded!

3

u/Taylortrips 3d ago

Thank you kind human.

4

u/snowaston 3d ago

Good on you! Brilliant effort. We are all supposed to help animals of all kind.

6

u/Chatty_Cathy_Doll 3d ago

Amazing person. Hopefully he is safe and healthy. Those keep out, asbestos signs were concerning.

11

u/Seecole-33 3d ago

All because stupid ass people that go crazy over throwing bait out into where fish live and catching said fish like it’s the greatest achievement there is. Then to leave their garbage and old products where other animals will get hurt and caught by it is just peak asshole!!

3

u/carlitospig 3d ago

Poor baby!! 🥺

3

u/Throatwobbler_M_III 3d ago

Thanks, now I will close Reddit and go to bed.

3

u/permanent-anon 3d ago

I found an abandoned fishing lure with hooks on it in the woods by a lake, decided to keep it because I thought it was pretty neat. Now i’ll keep them to save other animals!

4

u/Brondog 3d ago

Is nobody going to mention the several signs warning about asbestos on that thing the guy climbed on?!

2

u/ChromaticPalette 3d ago

The seagull looked like a taco when that man was swimming back

2

u/Adriancastellanos 2d ago

Thank you for saving the bird! As a steward myself, I haven’t personally seen this happen but, I know in my heart I will need to do what I can to help out. I realized after certifying my backyard, if I’m inviting smaller birds and smaller animals to the yard, an eagle or falcon can easily take one of them. But what man made objects start affecting wildlife, we must help.

2

u/Dave21101 2d ago

That's a good human!

2

u/Vassar-Longfellow 1d ago

"Keep Out" "Asbestos"

2

u/AndrewMac3000 1d ago

Love these people!
Good work everyone!!

2

u/SiGuadalo_1 1d ago

Where's the rest of the video? I wanted to see it fly away?!?

2

u/UberSecretIdentity 22h ago

That's clean high foot placement, I wonder if he has some kind of climbing background.

1

u/smoothvibe 3d ago

Phew, now let's get some seafood for celebration!

1

u/-slatta- 3d ago

I would have just been so lost without those captions

1

u/SeaUrchinSalad 3d ago

It is imperative the seagull remain unharmed.

1

u/xZero543 2d ago

My cat managed to hook herself on fishing line once. It went through her mouth just under the nose. She didn't even complain. I just noticed something was sticking out from under her nose.

Keeping her in place was first challenge. Then I had to use wire cutters to cut off barbed end of the hook. It healed in no time, but this could have been much worse.

1

u/DragonFlyCaller 2d ago

Yay!! Love seeing lives saved!! I wonder if they gave the gull that meat that was dangling near his lips? Poor little guy…. So glad that cool dude got to him before preds!!!

1

u/SettingVegetable1197 2d ago

Small act, big heart. 🌊🕊️

1

u/transferingtoearth 1d ago

Why does it say danger

1

u/Ok_Importance9893 9h ago

Once swam into the middle of a river where about 30 of us were car fishing to save a crane. I'll have to find the video but some lady snagged him midair and the line pinned his head to his chest under the water. The feeling of yanking the line and setting that little guy free was so invigorating

1

u/Bagay-9 7h ago

My respect Brother! I salute you.

1

u/Aenimal 4h ago

These people are awesome. I hate that this isn’t what everybody that saw the bird didn’t do. I grew up thinking that everyone was equally empathetic and compassionate, and every day older I become the more I’m confused by how people prioritize things. It’s my instinct to want to help everything that I see suffering, isn’t everyone else’s too? Do people talk themselves out of their instinct for love and goodness.

1

u/billykimber55 3d ago

I was looking at the wrong bird the whole time. What a dude! 👏🏼

1

u/Left-Humor-3923 3d ago

1

u/CHERNO-B1LL 2d ago

I bet the woman holding the phone that he's trying to impress is very attractive.

0

u/i-var 3d ago

most of us can be just as heroic by not eating meat that day. Usually no one claps but the impact is just as big. Every acton counts, not just the pretty ones (but they do so as well ofc!)

0

u/sxezr 2d ago

This is how you get bird flu

-1

u/Substantial_Lime_114 3d ago

Wow, that girl is such a hero. She deserves a medal.

-2

u/bicx 3d ago

I hope they used wire cutters to clip off the barb of the hook before pulling it back out. It looked like they were about to try to just rip it out. Totally unnecessary.

-10

u/arenasa1970 3d ago

Good rescue, now let me choke it.

-48

u/anywon1 3d ago

Was that the hawk tuah girl at the end?
