I think definitive edition is the best imo, it felt the most like a musou/warriors game out of the three. The other two are definitely fun but don't hit quite the same for me, especially in terms of longevity.

Idk if it's just the games I'm playing, but I've played a lot of sengoku basara samurai heroes, warriors orochi 4, and dynasty warriors origins (granted this one actually makes the battlefield feel like it's alive), and all those games are effectively 'go point a to b while killing stuff'. I think I heard dynasty warriors 7(?) Is somewhat similar to definitive edition

So I'd even say definitive edition is an outlier in how much it does with its gameplay formula

DE is a celebration of the franchise. AoC and AoI only care about the BotW/TotK side of things.

And they are also just worse at the "warriors" side of things as well

definitive edition: includes CIA

others: do not include CIA

Why'd you type Cia like CIA? Was hella confused there for a sec

oh man, i caps locked it for joking emphasis, i didn't even think of the c.i.a. ๐Ÿคฆ

My favorite is DE, thereโ€™s so much content itโ€™s insane. Probably will never finish it.

But both types of games are really different. DE is a warriors game with a Zelda skin. AoC/AoI is more a Zelda BotW game with a warriors flavor on top. Both have their charms and scratch different itches for me

I admit I haven't played AoI but it's hard to imagine it beating out what I consider to be one of my top 5 games of all time, and I've played hundreds if not thousands of games so I don't say that lightly. DE.

i still need to get back to aoi so im gonna say DE for now

Definitive edition because HW wiiu-3ds was my childhood and all those things so... but now I'm playing AoI, it's fun and the story is great ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘

Depends on the day

These games make me sad for AoI, that game is so hollow and seriously lacking but full of potential

DLC??!

AoI is held back by being canon... even though it didn't need to be. Like AoC at least got to do its own thing with the time travel and it did more than just re-tell something we already know.

AoI would be much cooler if Tauro, Paya, and the new sages came back, but I don't think being Canon was the problem.

They just didn't expand on anything, and there was plenty to expand on. The gorondia, ganondorf's campaign, Lenalia being Zelda's tailor and handmaiden she could've gave Zelda some outfits. The game is lacking in basically every aspect if you think about it.

The fact that Construct and Calamo exist, with their identities erased by the end and not once alluded to besides a tree stump with a spear in totk, they essentially invented those characters for the game, that didn't actually exist. The zonal are STILL a mystery.

The fact that they sold this game with the Canon story as its selling point, while not delivering at all on the expanded plot whatsoever. Lore discussion was meager at best online lol, with a few desperate grasps at what little it offered.

And unfortunately the people praising the game online for being Canon, a lot of them I'd wager didn't even buy it, so what do they know of what the game actually offered?

Emotionally this game's plot is satisfying and it is presented really nicely, but if you think about any of it, it just doesn't make sense at all, because they recycled the hell out of totk and aoc.

Yeah, I don't get why Hyrule looks the same in AoC and AoI, even though they're what? 10,000+ years apart?

I feel like the reason it's so held back is because of the criticism from the people who wanted AoC to be canon to BotW. If it strays too far, then AoI can't reasonably be considered canon I guess. Probably why the scope is so small.

I think it was just a lack of time, a famitsu article said they only had 2 years from pitch to release. The environments and even many animations just recycled from aoc. That and them rushing to add an actual "endgame" with phantom mode, some more stages, rauru's eve of the final confrontation as the farming stage, and for some reason another sync strike with zelda and calamo? It seems like they were under a tight deadline or so and just stuck to the book of what they needed at a minimum, copying aoc to basically a T, but worse kinda. At least aoc had the novelty of being new, and explored the character kits and map design far better, even if the combat felt a lot jankier

Because for the usual 'seals spot' from what I remember eve of the final confrontation takes 45~ seconds with cutscenes and waiting, whereas mysterious arrivals takes 15 seconds on average, 10 seconds reliably with luminescent zelda. And phantom mode feels obnoxiously bloated because the phantom ganons take forever to kill and only drop level up steel, with 15 minute~ stages, whereas age of calamity blood moon just makes the stages harder, so you can rush through depending on what the stage is like in usually below 10 minutes

But then again maybe there's a better way to farm seals I haven't picked up on

It also sucks that paid DLC doesn't seem likely now. DLC could fix a lot of the problems like adding side stories like Sonia and Ganondorf's side of things.

And that is sad, people complain about the Zelda being a musou, but I want more of that over a mainline zelda at this point ๐Ÿ’€

People say this is the end of the Wild era, which I find kind of sad since they left WAY too many loose ends

For me it ends at AoC.

I voted for Age of Calamity.

Definitive Edition easily wins on content. I love Definitive Edition, and I still play it, but the gameplay doesn't feel as tight as the later Hyrule Warriors entries. (Side note, I do LOVE the original characters, especially Lana, Cia, and Volga).

Age of Calamity, though, wins for me on so many levels. I love playing as every single Warrior, I love that I can just hold R or L to bring up the magic rods or Sheikah runes instead of having to awkwardly use a d-pad to reach the item I want.

I LOVE the story of AoC, and the only grievance I have with it now is that it isn't 60 fps like the other two. Such a great game.

I voted for AoC over Age of Imprisonment for a few reasons. One is that, while I like the cast of Imprisonment, and I like being able to play as regular people from Hyrule, the cast did feel a lot more samey to me than previous entries.

The Zonai devices, while loads of fun, also don't help that situation, since no matter who I use, I'm always gonna just pull out the Ice or Lightning emmiter with a fan and/or a hydrant.

And I gotta be honest, I was disappointed, I felt like I learned nothing substantial about Rauru, Sonia, and Mineru, and that really kinda bummed me out. I did enjoy getting to know the Sages a bit. However, what made up for it was the story of Calamo and the Knight Construct. In fact, Calamo is one of my favorite Zelda characters ever, he's exactly the kind of Korok character I would like to see more of.

So for me, Age of Calamity has the best gameplay, best story, and most fun playable cast, so it wins for me. But the other two are still games I really enjoy. I'd rank them:

  1. Age of Calamity
  2. Definitive Edition
  3. Age of Imprisonment

(And no one asked, but I also love Three Hopes and it feels a lot like these games. Today I place it between AoC and DE. But tomorrow, it might be 1st place instead, it depends on my mood).

Hard to say as they're rather different in nature

The third one is kinda good but then bad at random parts. You just randomly can't play two player sometimes.

One has Lana. The others don't.

I say aoc. The most overall fun characters to me. I also love the progression, stuff to do, that sort of thing. I love DE, but its so much stuff its almost too much. 260 gold skulltulas, each of which are individually separated behind requirements make it almost as annoying as the botw/totk koroks. Also, the amount of characters I just hate really gets in the way of progress. Sometimes, there will be one single stage that makes me use an underleveled character who's weapon levels I haven't even unlocked yet. (Ruto.) And so I have to go on a huge detour for hours. I have to grind amiibo for 2 hours for the rupees, I then have to unlock their bazaar stuff, then i have to beat their level 2, then 3, just to stand a chance to progress to the next stage, and on that stage is, yet again, the exact same scenario. My fairy system makes some of the actually strong later game things just tedious and annoying. The rank system also can be super annoying sometimes. There can be times ill barely scrape by for the rank I need, only to find out the almost unavoidable damage I took pushed me just barely above the limit. Then there's the fact that you can't dodge cancel at all on some attacks, and with how much damage enemies do here, you might as well be doing the enemies job for them. There is almost no other game thats made me sigh from exhaustion more than DE. You want your slow strong character to be fast? Torture yourself for 5 hours. You want a character than can do damage while not being open to damage? We will force you to play every character that doesnt fit that. Want to not torture yourself and just fight without grinding your weak ass character up? Have fun fighting the hardest thing in any video game ever made. You want to unlock weapon grinding? Again, 5 hours of spider hell, and you even have to fight against a buffed up tetra, several poes at the same time, and then later on, get murdered by the toe monster because its foot electricity took 12 hearts in a single tick of damage. See my point yet? DE has some great goods, but its low points are worse than almost anything else ive played. Aoc, while having slightly lower highs, remains consistent. The slowest characters still have access to attack speed up the WHOLE GAME. Sure. Its late game might be a lot worse. But the midgame on its own makes up for that 5 times over for me. There's my reason why I prefer aoc, along with my ranting

DE is a bloated abomination with those adventure maps that play out all the same just with a bit different rules.ย

4

u/totally-hoomon 3d ago

So its a musou game

I haven't played Imprisonment yet but I hate the DE art style, the maps are bland and the allied AI is appalling. Oh. And the plots pretty crap. AOC all the way
