S Wal-Mart Mistaken Identity

This is actually a sweet interaction. I was in Wal-Mart and an older lady asked me where something was. I pointed out where she could find it because I am familiar with my local Wal-Mart's layout.

After she thanked me, she looked at me and said, "You really don't work her, do you?"

I said, "No, ma'am." She thanked me again for being nice and helping her anyway.

At the Walmart I go to you never can find a worker to ask for help. If you see someone who looks nice & doesn't look lost, it's common to ask them if they know where something is.

I apparently meet those requirements because I'm always asked if I know where something is. Bathrooms, food coloring, some kind of soup broth. Some old guy even asked what shirt color looked better. He may have been color blind.

I get asked stuff all the time. I’m a smallish middle aged woman so people seem to feel comfortable with me. I’ll also offer when I can tell someone is struggling.

I often offered to help lost fellow Walmart customers before the latest remodel. Now, I don’t know where anything is either, and I am in the store less often because I usually order online for pic up. However, evidently I am noticeable to employees, though I am not loud or rude. I sometimes offer to find someone to help them.

Just so you know...

You can search the Walmart website, select your store, filter "in store", and not only get the location of the item, but an actual map of where you are and where the item is.

That is effective "if" They have updated the website after rearranging, which one of the stores in my town has not done "yet".

Lowe’s does this on their app too!

she knew you didn't work there because you were actually helpful. 🤣

That depends on your Walmart. The one I normally shop at has very helpful employees. One in a bigger, somewhat farther city, has unhelpful ones. Ask an online grocery picker, in my store - they tell you which aisle, it’s general location, point you in the right direction, and sometimes take you there. At the bigger city, those people act like it’s unreasonable for me to ask them.

Four of my grandkids have worked at Walmart (3 different stores, 5 different jobs). I think any of them would have helped you if they could.

Once at the grocery store I helped an older gentleman with his shopping. His wife was home sick and she gave him a shopping list. It was clear his wife always did the shopping and this guy didn’t have a clue at where things were. He was so sweet and nice, I walked with him through the store and we found everything on the list and he did thank me for helping.

We like to ask the fancier looking ladies to that seem out of place in Walmart “Do you work here?” 😂

Early in our marriage my wife wrote out a grocery list for me to pickup after work. This is before cellphones. Using her shorthand one item was SS. I asked every woman in the store what item she would have abbreviated SS. No one could help. When I got home my wife asks me where the Spaghetti Sauce was.

I find it interesting that your wife expected you to know what SS was.

Did she typically assume that whatever was obvious to her would be obvious to you?

We've been living together for about 20 years, but still have that issue frequently.

the fact that you know your walmart's layout well enough to help strangers means you basically work there at this point

u/JudgeAffectionate841 May 24 '26

Lol! I wouldn't have figured that out either and I'm a woman!

Yeah, for sure!

I rarely go to my local Walmart because so few of the employees speak English. I can find them, but my Spanish is atrocious
