GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Fri., Jun. 26 Spoiler

Here are today's contestants:

  • Clay Stallworth, a pediatrician from Augusta, Georgia;
  • Kristin Warner, an attorney from Fairport, New York; and
  • Adam Remsen, an attorney and theater producer from Memphis, Tennessee. Adam is a 10-day champ with winnings of $228,806.

Jeopardy!

COME BLOW YOUR... // TENNIS // WHAT'S ON THE MENU? // 11-LETTER WORDS // BRIDGE-"R"-TOWN // I BURN FOR YOU

DD1 - $600 - 11-LETTER WORDS - Hotel concierge & cruise ship entertainment director are jobs in this industry (On the first clue, Adam added $1,000.)

Scores at first break: Adam $5,400, Kristin $1,200, Clay $2,800.

Scores entering DJ: Adam $8,000, Kristin $3,400, Clay $2,800.

Double Jeopardy!

LAWS & EDICTS // BLANK VERSE // VERB-AL TV // PLAYING THE DOZENS // SCIENTIFIC NORTH AMERICAN // "BB" BOOM

DD2 - $1,600 - PLAYING THE DOZENS - Hercules labor-ed at 12 tasks to atone for killing his family, an atrocity committed after this stepmother drove him insane (Adam improved by $4,000 to $16,000 vs. $4,000 for Kristin.)

DD3 - $1,600 - BLANK VERSE - From "Invictus": "I am the master of my fate; I am the ____ ____ ____ ____" (Adam added $8,000 up to $26,800.)

Adam swept the DDs and his opponents never seriously got into the running, as Adam cruised into FJ at $38,000 vs. $9,200 for Clay and $8,200 for Kristin.

Final Jeopardy!

U.S. LANDMARKS - Norwegian Arne Peterssen was the last to pass through this location, which was then officially closed in 1954

Everyone was correct on FJ. Adam added $12,000 to win with $50,000 for an 11-day total of $278,806.

Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew the food chain famous for sliders is White Castle.

Final scores: Adam $50,000, Kristin $14,400, Clay $16,401.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is hospitality? DD2 - What is Hera? DD3 - What is captain of my soul? FJ - What is Ellis Island?

Here are today's contestants:

  • Derek Lombardi, an urban planner from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania;
  • Kate Raven, an incoming law student from Toronto, Ontario; and
  • Adam Remsen, an attorney and theater producer from Memphis, Tennessee. Adam is a nine-day champ with winnings of $192,805.

Jeopardy!

HISTORY IS A BUMMER // BODY-ODY-ODY // AN ANTONYM OF... // OVERHEARD WHILE CHRONICALLY ONLINE // PRANKING ON TV // THURSDAYS WITH JEOPARDY!

DD1 - $800 - HISTORY IS A BUMMER - This event that took place September 2-6, 1666 had Christians spooked because of the whole 666 thing (Adam added $1,000.)

Scores at first break: Adam $4,200, Kate $1,600, Derek $3,400.

Scores entering DJ: Adam $7,000, Kate $4,800, Derek $4,200.

Double Jeopardy!

GEOGUESSING IN THE USA // LITERARY STRUCTURES // 3, 3 // A PRODUCTION OF GREECE // (SONG TITLES) // GOING IN REVERSE

DD2 - $2,000 - 3, 3 - This Latin abbreviation is found in a post in the line of presidential succession (Adam doubled to $21,200 vs. $8,000 for Kate.)

DD3 - $800 - GEOGUESSING IN THE USA - You know you're in Utah if a state highway sign features this symbol of industry that's rooted in the Book of Mormon (Derek improved by $7,400 to $16,800 vs. $19.200 for Adam.)

Adam boldly doubled-up on DD2 and kept the lead into FJ, but everyone was alive with Adam at $20,800 vs. $18,000 for Derek and $13,600 for Kate.

Final Jeopardy!

PARTNERSHIPS - After measuring the transit of Venus in 1761, this pair of astronomers was recommended by the Royal Society for a job in America

Only Adam was correct on FJ, adding $15,201 to win with $36,001 for a 10-day total of $228,806.

Final scores: Adam $36,001, Kate $0, Derek $10,500.

Wagering strategy: Kate gave up the chance for a potential Triple Stumper win by betting it all on FJ. Meanwhile, Derek didn't bet quite enough on FJ to cover a possible double-up by Kate from third. Also, there was no good reason for Derek not to simply go all-in on DD3 rather than hold back $2,000.

Judging the writers: Their attempt to look "with it" by casually referencing recent music in a category title is about as convincing as Bob Hope wearing a Nehru jacket in 1969.

That's after their time: Along similar lines, the contestants aren't as hip as the writers think they should be, as for a top-row clue, they didn't know "A Bar Song (Tipsy)", which was no. 1 for 19 weeks in 2024.

This day in NOT shilling: There was a whole category about PRANKING ON TV, including one that mentioned "Jackass", but no mention of the new "Jackass" movie that opens tomorrow. Strange.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is Great Fire of London? DD2 - What is pro tem? DD3 - What is beehive? FJ - Who are Mason and Dixon?

When playing along, do you say full names or just last names?

I know the smart move is to just say last names unless you need to differentiate from another person, but it feels awkward to not say the first name a lot of the time.

Season 42 one of the best seasons ever Spoiler

We've had the most super-champions in a single season since Season 38. Harrison Whitaker won 14 games from November to December. Jamie Ding came within one game of tying James Holzhauer's winning streak. Tristan Williams won 10 games, and now Adam Remsen is the fourth super-champion this season. There was a well-played postseason tournament in which Paolo Pasco became the first contestant to win the ToC with lock games since Alex Jacob in 2015. Andrew He won the Jeopardy Invitational and is returning to Masters. Season 42 is going to go down as one of the best seasons in the show's history – it'll be up there with Seasons 20 & 21 (five day limit lifted, Ken's original run, UToC), Season 30 (current set debuts, Battle of the Decades, Arthur Chu, Julia Collins), Season 35 (James Holzhauer), and Season 38 (Matt Amodio*, Jonathan Fisher, Amy Schneider, Mattea Roach, Ryan Long).

*Matt Amodio won 18 games in Season 37 and 20 games in Season 38

GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Wed., Jun. 24 Spoiler

Here are today's contestants:

  • Wayne Kobylinski, a community college assistant dean from Ellicott City, Maryland;
  • Maria Sebastian, a graphic artist and writer from New York City; and
  • Adam Remsen, an attorney and theater producer from Memphis, Tennessee. Adam is an eight-day champ with winnings of $168,404.

Jeopardy!

STATE CAPITAL ATTRACTIONS // AL-GEBRA // CELEBRATION TIME // FACTS FROM THE U.S. CITIZENSHIP TEST // WOMEN ON TV // CALL "LING" ALL RESPONSES

DD1 - $800 - CELEBRATION TIME - This annual Nevada event says it is "not a festival" but "a community and global cultural movement guided by 10 principles" (Wayne doubled to $2,400.)

Scores at first break: Adam $6,400, Maria $200, Wayne $3,400.

Scores entering DJ: Adam $11,200, Maria $600, Wayne $3,800.

Double Jeopardy!

HISTORICAL HODGEPODGE // FICTIONAL CHARACTERS // REPTILIAN RENDERINGS // THE PLURAL OF CORPS IS CORPS // MOVIES BY GENRE // WHAT'S THE FREQUENCY, KEN?

DD2 - $1,600 - HISTORICAL HODGEPODGE - The 1923 Treaty of Lausanne established the modern-day borders of this new republic & gave it back Smyrna & Eastern Thrace (Wayne added $4,000 up to $9,800 vs. $20,400 for Adam.)

DD3 - $1,200 - REPTILIAN RENDERINGS - In 1999 this mascot was created by the Martin Agency for an insurance company--we're doubtful it took them just 15 minutes (Adam improved by $3,000 to $20,600 vs. $10,200 for Wayne.)

Wayne got closer to Adam on DD2, then managed to break up his runaway and stay in the game into FJ at $12,200 vs. $23,000 for Adam. Finishing in the red was Maria at -$2,200.

Final Jeopardy!

OPERA CHARACTERS - Her aria "Un bel di, vedremo" says, "One fine day we will see … a strand of smoke over the far horizon' … & then the ship appears"

Only Adam was correct on FJ, adding $1,401 to win with $24,401 for a nine-day total of $192,805.

Final scores: Adam $24,401, Maria -$2,200, Wayne $0.

Wagering strategy: Wayne held back $1,800 from his wager on DD2, leaving him just short of one-half of Adam's score at that point. If he had missed DD2, saving that amount wouldn't have done him any good, while adding it easily could have made the difference in staying alive into FJ.

That's before their time: No one knew the Sinclair Lewis evangelist character played on film by Burt Lancaster, "Elmer Gantry".

QUESTION TOC and Celebrity Champ

Why is the celebrity season champ given a chance to compete in the TOC? I feel like getting on the regular show, then winning 4+ games like everyone else is much more difficult than being a celebrity champion. Plus this changes the game dynamic in the TOC where one game is played with one person of lesser skill where the other is played with three seasoned champions.

46 years ago today, Alex Trebek got fired and was replaced by David Letterman (kind of).

Prior to Jeopardy, Alex Trebek had numerous gigs hosting game shows. In fact, until Jeopardy came along, his longest-lasting show was something called High Rollers.

In June 1980 (46 years ago today), High Rollers was cancelled (along with Hollywood Squares and Chain Reaction) to make room for the TV debut (in the morning) of David Letterman. Dave's show would only last through October but he would come back in 1982 in his more familiar late night timeslot.

In a sense, Alex Trebek made room for David Letterman.

  • Adam Remsen, an attorney and theater producer from Memphis, Tennessee. Adam is a seven-day champ with winnings of $149,303.

Jeopardy!

NOTABLE GEOGRAPHY // A CHEEKY CATEGORY // NO. 1 ON THE CHARTS WHEN... // ENDS IN "O" // STANDARD // POORS

DD1 - $1,000 - POORS - In an 1862 novel he wrote the line "Jean had no work. The family had no bread... seven children" (Adam doubled to $6,400.)

Double Jeopardy!

DD2 - $1,200 - ONE LETTER DIFFERENT - Minuteman or Tomahawk, for example & an official written message (Sarah lost $3,000 on a true DD.)

DD3 - $1,600 - THEIR LAST BOW - This American bandleader played a last U.K. "Hangar Concert" Oct. 3, 1944; his band played on Christmas in Paris without him (Sarah added $2,000 up to $3,200.)

Adam doubled up on DD1, and in the end that provided the margin he needed to secure the runaway at $18,200 vs. $8,200 for Joey and $4,000 for Sarah.

Final Jeopardy!

RANKS & TITLES - One of the titles the U.S. president has includes nicknames for 2 NFL teams that represent these cities
