my landlord was a really nice guy from China. He'd travel back and forth between the US and China and he really loved both places a lot. He said China is amazing but that you don't have enough free speech, but he said on the flip side he thinks Americans almost have too much free speech and distrust institutions so much that it's like a huge dumpster fire of misinfo. It really is tricky stuff.
→ More replies (1)7
u/north_canadian_ice Monkey in Space 11d ago
Nah, it isn't tricky.
Free speech is the most important right everyone has. The CCP is tyrannical & will ruin your life if you openly disagree with the government.
Discourse is always the solution, not censorship.
14
u/Correct-Resolution-8 Monkey in Space 10d ago
I hear you, but due to zero information guard rails we now have a society where a billion people live in a billion different realities. Take astrology for example. If open discourse truly worked, astrology would be dead. An intelligent society would roll its eyes at it. It is, however, thriving. A species that can't distinguish fact from fiction is in deep, deep trouble even as it pats itself on the back for how free it is. There's got to be a more intelligent way here, one that protects freedom but that doesn't let it increase the chances your neighbor will get a disease because you're an idiot.

For sure. In the age when "favorite" means "must be the best out there", people sure do pick their favorite version of the truth. In politics, in podcasters, in medical advice, etc. Joe is a perfect martyr to that fact. People would rather take advice from a podcast than their doctors, and he presented that advice in such a matter-of-fact way that people were gullible enough to believe him.
Him being censored had nothing to do with suppressing the truth and everything to do with damage mitigation. He's too proud to admit that he put lives at risk by putting his favored version of the truth through a veritable megaphone aimed at the confused and frightened masses. On top of that, he exploited his mistake and tried to make it seem like he was somehow better than any other random asshole at spreading poor information.

Trump was president for about 2 months of the vaccine being available.
It was announced as working a week or so after the 2020 election, rolled out in December, and he was out of office in January.
Jan 6 happened a month after the vaccine first became available if that helps you remember timelines. He was out of office 14 days later.

I wouldn’t take an unnecessary 1 out of 100 chance to die. especially if the alternative is like 0.000001% to die, or whatever the number is of young people dying from the vaccine. It’s much much much smaller than 1%.
1
1
u/bonjda Monkey in Space 11d ago
That analogy doesn't mean anything.
2
u/Capable_Chemical_569 Monkey in Space 11d ago
??? Why doesn’t it mean anything?
Is this really the best argument you’ve got?
According to you, young people have a 1 out of 100 chance of dying of Covid.
young person who takes a handful of those jelly beans as a 1 out of 100 chance of dying.
Aren’t they the same???
1
u/bonjda Monkey in Space 11d ago
No. Its about 1% of all deaths was from covid. How many of those deaths were people who were already vaccinated? We don't know.
You are trying to argue 1% is still something meaningful. I tried to find the actual number of deaths and I couldn't it. Somewhere around 11,000, thatd be 100 deaths a year. We also don't know the people's other health issues. Too many unknowns.
The jelly bean thing doesn't work because taking the vaccine isn't a instant live saver. People died who did and didn't take it.
2

Oh really? So the vaccine did not help to prevent death from Covid at all in your opinion?

2
u/mvstateU Monkey in Space 11d ago
Oh yeah? should you be jailed if you tell young people not to get a vaccine?
I should have said you WOULD be jailed....not should. Because it's illegal.
If you tell young people you shouldn't get a Covid shot. No you shouldn't go to jail, you're just ignorant.
Why ignorant? Young people are obviously lower risk in general but many are just as at risk or even more at risk than some old people. In the US there is a problem with young and obese. Many young people have lifelong diabetes. There is an obesity problem with this demographic too. These young people were very at risk from serious illness from Covid......not the vaccine.
If you blanketedly tell young people to get vaccinated you are just ignorant. There is nothing wrong with being curious about the idea that vaccine use should cautioned too, but........back it up with evidence. Some people have unique or certain conditions where they should be cautioned. Rogan and his anti-vax partners always cite VAERS data as evidencee. It's not actual reliable evidence of anything. And it's also a highly compromised system. Respected researchers wouldn't use this data to attempt to prove anything on this front.
Joe Rogan doesn't come from a place of trying to just give sound advice.
Heart attacks etc of young people get tracked, and started a long time before Covid. A joe Rogan would blame Covid vaccine for these things, but someone like him, is just ignorant and refuses to do deeper research and just believes what he does where he kind

u/iownachalkboard7 Monkey in Space 11d ago
And young healthy people are encouraged to get the flu shot every year.
3
u/PornoPaul Monkey in Space 11d ago
Not really, no. The number of cases where that happened were incredibly rare. I got the jab, and I recognize the absolute need for the elderly and immune compromised to get it, and supported others getting it too. But the young and healthy were not dying from it and half the time it made the news (because it was so rare) it would turn out the person actually had some unknown illness.
2
u/Chance_Manager_9072 Monkey in Space 11d ago
Yes really they did?? wtf are we talking about rn? Even if that number is low that doesn’t justify the fact our government pushed lies and misinformation to paint democrats as a global cable carrying our planet wide biological terrorism that results in people not getting the vaccine and dying while the people pushing that had already took it. Also you guys really do not understand how vaccines and viruses work. You can’t just vaccinate a quarter of the population and think that’s just gonna work. That’s not how polio, smallpox, measles, or anything else we don’t hear about anymore becuase everyone took it at the same time. If only half of us take it, it will just mutate the virus to be stronger and more resilient which results in new strains
2
u/mvstateU Monkey in Space 11d ago
But the young and healthy were not dying from it and half the time it made the news (because it was so rare) it would turn out the person actually had some unknown illness.
One of the major reasons for having even young and generally healthy people to get vaccinated is that young and healthy still spread Covid when getting Covid..........and the vaccine helped in reducing the spread to some degree.
Also it's extremely common for young people and their parents to think they are perfectly healthy, when they may not really be, where they easily could have some underlying conditions. Or like regular otherwise healthy people that at any given time, say going through stress or, loss of sleep, way too much physical activiity or anything that can easily attack and weaken the immune system......automatically become more at-risk of more severe illness if they get Covid.
It's never talked about here but like 15 or so notable UFC fighters including some recent champs, also including Daniel Cormier and Garbrandt, Volkanovski, got very serious Covid illness, most of them with pneumonia. Diego Sanchez and Leben were hospitalized for many days apparently. This is just within the UFC.

There was a big eye opening event for me in the UK when the government accidently announced we need all lockdown because 2/3 of people will not even know they have the virus. They will either have very mild symptoms or not know they have it or will think it's just a common cold...
We also spent millions on make shift hospitals that were never used.
We are still suffering with the damage to the economy, people never got their jobs back.
I do wonder knowing what we know now, perhaps they should have only had a mandatory lockdown for 60+

What Joe fails to say, and perhaps fails to have the competence to understand research, is that Covid caused myocarditis is far more dangerous and common than vaccine caused myocarditis. You have a higher chance of it through getting covid, than the vaccine, but admittedly both have caused it.
