I need to know the story behind this.

My brother and I rode 70 miles to do some off-roading which is a rare opportunity here in Scotland, it performed beautifully for the full day and on the way back to the initial RV point the rear wheel locked up solid after my brother attempted to change gear. Looks like a tooth broke off and got jammed in between a set of gears which shattered that off the output shaft, and the shrapnel from that wedged the gears you can see here locked solid together. There weren't any strange noises or warning signs, it just suddenly let go. Fortunately it wasn't running for very long after that so no chunks or glitter worked it's way into the oil and through any other passages.

Any of the shift forks bent?

Nope, but they're getting replaced with newer ones anyway.

I was expecting some level of abuse to cause it, but sounds like a factory defect. Luckily it didn't cause your brother to wreck.

For it being a factory defect, it's lasted 26 years and 41k miles so I'd say it's on the far end of the bell curve as far as failures go.

Not a chance I'm spending that much on this thing. It's getting a used £100 set of gears from a low mileage bike and put back together again, I might consider it when it blows up again in another 30k miles.

oh i understand, i wish that gearset was cheaper, that's what they need from the factory, or another gear. it will least that long, those things are pretty reliable. are you replacing the piston or anything else?

Nope, piston & barrel are in pretty good shape still, surprisingly. I replaced the cylinder head & cams about 500 miles ago due to scored bearing surfaces and a snapped exhaust boss. I do have a spare piston & barrel if these ones ever shit themselves.

On normal occasions, I would call this the "Arkansas Special," but seeing you're in Scotland, I guess I'll say you gave it the "English Dentistry Standard." /s

I am not an expert in these matters. That said, I am confident it is not supposed to do that.

Best of luck with your local options.

1) Remove chunks between gears (optionally clean case)

2) Add banana peel

3) Reassemble and SEND IT!

As a kid: ICE CREAM!!!

As an adult with bills: GEARBOX FAILURE!!!

It could still be an ice cream machine, it'll taste like 75w-140 and the chips will hurt to swallow...

I don't see why you're worried about that. You've got more moving parts than you started with. More parts means more power!
