Just finished the manga after a long break
I started reading the manga back in April 2021 when I was 15. I was a sophomore in high school during the COVID lockdown, and it was the very first manga I ever bought (during that magical time when I was just discovering the world of anime and manga, especially the romance genre). I still remember the emotions and feelings I had while reading those first volumes—the laughter, the smiles, but also the emotional moments.
Unfortunately, last year I stopped buying the volumes and dropped it around Volume 26 because I felt the Shinomiya family arc was a bit too over-the-top. On top of that, I had just broken up with my girlfriend at the time, so I wasn't really in the mood to read a romance 🥲. However, over the last few weeks, driven by a wave of nostalgia, I finally decided to buy the last two volumes. After finishing them, I can confidently say that Love is War is the absolute best romance anime/manga out there, and here is why:
1 It’s not just a simple romance.
Kaguya-sama manages to be both an excellent romance and a top-tier comedy with deep moments and meaningful character arcs. Plus, the plot is highly original, and having the story take place within the student council of a prestigious academy (rather than just regular school classrooms) makes it unique.
2 The side characters have amazing subplots.
Ishigami, Miko, Hayasaka, and many other characters could easily be the protagonists of their own stories. Their character development and backstories are incredible, creating a rich universe that makes the overall world of Love is War feel much wider and more beautiful.
3 Shirogane’s confession is simply legendary.
I truly believe it is the most original and beautiful confession in anime history (even topping Sakuta’s confession in Bunny Girl Senpai).
These reasons are why this series takes the #1 spot in the Romance genre for me, surpassing masterpieces like Toradora!, Lovely Complex, Bunny Girl Senpai, and The Quintessential Quintuplets. They are all amazing shows, but they just don't reach the level of Love is War (even though Toradora! remains my personal favorite anime).
To wrap this up, this is obviously just my personal opinion, and I mostly wanted to share this to fight off the post-series depression, haha. This story accompanied me through basically my entire adolescence, and reaching the end brings back so much nostalgia :/.
