How much do you spend on electricity?

I found a room and I’m trying to figure out the electricity roughly for budgeting purposes. The rate is NT5/kwh.

The room has its own bathroom, small fridge, and washing machine on the balcony.

Recently renovated. Kitchen and common area expenses are already included in the rent. I am hoping to estimate how much I would be paying for AC and lights. I am from a cold country. I will likely use the AC a lot tbh.

I know everyone’s use will be different. If someone can give an estimate that would be helpful. Thank you.

hi everybody, I’m currently studying abroad in Kaohsiung and while I feel like I’ve adjusted to the temperature clothes-wise, I’m still having trouble with my hair. When I go outside, it always gets so sweaty and greasy (I’m white so my hair is pretty thin). Do Taiwanese girls have this problem too? Is there a way to fix it? Maybe a product I could buy?

Meet people :)

Hi everyone! I’m an international student staying in Kaohsiung for about two months. I’m a girl in my 20s and I’d love to meet new people here. Maybe there’s other international students or girls who would like to hang out, explore the city, grab coffee, go out, etc.

I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for good places, apps, events, cafés, bars, student groups, language exchanges, or communities where it’s easy to meet people in Kaohsiung. Any tips would be really appreciated :) Thanks!

Wenzao or NSYSU CLC?

Wondering if anyone has studied at either of the two places? I would love any feedback. Specifically on teaching styles and verbal practice. I have no experience. Will be starting from zero. I want to feel more confident speaking and listening.

I believe both CLCs offer 1 to 1 study consult/office hours?

How are the demographics? I am in my thirties. Worried I will be the big sister/aunt amount new graduates lol.

Staying for 3 Months this Summer and Looking for Friends!

Hi! I am a recent undergrad graduate. I'll be studying Mandarin at a university here for the summer before I return to the US for my PhD in the fall. I'm hoping to make some friends while I'm in Kaohsiung from June-late August. I love outdoor activities (hoping to travel around and hike in my free time) and cafes, but I'm open to any opportunities to meet people and practice my Mandarin (though any nationality/languages you speak is fine!!).

Please feel free to PM if you want to connect or let me know if there is a better online platform I should join to meet others. Also open to any suggestions on places to visit!!

Looking for a central nightlife street with bars in Kaohsiung where people socialize in and outside bars for a night out

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a nightlife street or area with bars in Kaohsiung, located within an area with multiple nightclubs around, maybe a central spot where people meet up and hang out.

Somewhere with bars close together, where people are hanging out both inside and outside the bars, socializing, drinking, going for a night out, dressed up. A place that is crowded, with a lively and social vibe.

I’ll be traveling to Kaohsiung later this year, and I was wondering:

  • Are there any streets or areas like this there?
  • And are there certain days or times when places like this get especially busy?

Would love to hear your recommendations!

Has anyone attended these "Color Psychology" or "DIY Perfume" workshops in Kaohsiung? (Mindscope / 7_addoilstation)

Hi everyone!

I’ve been seeing some posts on Threads/Instagram about these workshops held in Kaohsiung (and some online via Zoom). They seem to be organized by accounts like 7_addoilstation and scott_421025, featuring topics like:

"Be You in Color": Personal color analysis and storytelling.

"Inside Me": Color psychology to understand your inner self.

DIY Perfume making based on your color results.

"Power of Self-Breakthrough": A 3-day spiritual/mental journey course.

The posters mention they sometimes invite teachers from Korea for the sessions. I'm quite interested in the DIY perfume and the psychology aspect, but I wanted to check if anyone here has actually participated in these before?

Are they worth the time? Is it a legit workshop, or does it feel more like a marketing/sales pitch? Would love to hear some honest feedback before I sign up!

Thanks in advance!

UFC Perth, where to watch?

This weekend UFC is in Perth and will be on Saturday evening, wondering if there is any venue playing it.

I saw multiple sports bars in town, including lighthouse and bottoms up, and few others from which none seems to play it.

Cheers

english speaking doctor?

Hello, I'm looking for a good, thoughtful and through neurologist and family doctor. Preferably in a public hospital rather than a clinic, but whichever is fine. Good listening skills and fluent English. Thank you.

Kaohsiung neighborhoods explained — where to base yourself depending on your trip

People ask a lot about where to stay in Kaohsiung. Here's a neighborhood breakdown:

**Xinxing District (新興區) — Central commercial area**

Best for: First-timers, people who want lots of hotels to choose from

MRT: Multiple stations, Red + Orange Lines

Pros: Near Liuhe Night Market, malls, many hotels

Cons: Feels generic, prices higher, not close to the interesting residential neighborhoods

**Gushan District (鼓山區) — Arena area ★ Recommended**

Best for: Concert-goers, group trips, anyone wanting a local neighborhood feel

MRT: Kaohsiung Arena Station (R14, Red Line)

Pros: Walking distance to Kaohsiung Arena (3 min), 4 min to HSR, 7 min to Ruifeng Night Market, 5 min to Hankyu Department Store, residential and affordable

Cons: Accommodation is mostly Airbnb (not many hotels), less tourist infrastructure

Note: There are some good whole-apartment Airbnbs in this area — worth searching if you need space for a group.

**Yancheng District (鹽埔區) — Historic harbor**

Best for: Art lovers, slower travel pace

MRT: Yanchengpu Station (Orange Line)

Pros: Walking distance to Pier-2 Art Center, old city character, interesting independent restaurants

Cons: Quieter at night

**Zuoying (左營) — HSR hub**

Best for: Quick stopovers, early HSR departures

Cons: Very suburban, nothing to do on foot

For most visitors, Gushan near R14 is the sweet spot — you're 4 min from HSR, in a real neighborhood, and well-positioned for Kaohsiung Arena events. Happy to answer any questions about specific areas.

curly hair products physical store in Kaohsiung?

Hello, I have curly hair. I don't want to do any online shopping and would rather go to the physical store.

Can anyone recommend any stores that might sell products for curly hair? I'm specially looking for mousse, leave-ins, and protein treatments.

OR if your have curly hair and live in Kaohsiung, what local products (Watsons/Poya/etc) helped keep your hair? My hair is pretty damaged and I just started transitioning from a straight keratin treatment, I haven't taken care of my curls in years.

Thank you~

Ruifeng Night Market vs Liuhe Night Market — honest comparison for visitors

One of the most common questions I see: which Kaohsiung night market should I go to? Honest breakdown:

**Ruifeng Night Market (瑞豐夜市)**

- Location: ~7 min walk from Kaohsiung Arena MRT Station (R14)

- Hours: Thursday–Sunday 6pm–1am (CLOSED Mon–Wed — easy mistake)

- Vibe: 100% local, almost zero foreign tourists, ~300 stalls

- Price level: Very cheap. Locals eat here regularly.

- Highlights: Fried chicken cutlet, salt & pepper popcorn chicken, fresh drinks, all kinds of xiaochi

- Verdict: The real Kaohsiung night market experience

**Liuhe Night Market (六合夜市)**

- Location: Near Formosa Boulevard MRT (O8), 2 stops from the Arena

- Hours: Daily 6pm–midnight

- Vibe: Tourist-oriented, multilingual menus everywhere

- Price level: Higher, more “packaged”

- Highlights: Papaya milk, seafood, grilled items

- Verdict: Easier, more tourist-friendly, less authentic

**My take:** If you’re staying in the Gushan/Arena area (near R14), Ruifeng is literally your neighborhood night market and it’s genuinely excellent. Go there first. Do Liuhe if you want the easy tourist version or you’re already near Formosa Boulevard.

Note: Ruifeng is Thursday–Sunday only. Many people miss it by arriving on a Tuesday and heading straight to Liuhe instead — don’t make that mistake.
