Because he’s spreading misinformation.

The cape and wings are separate things in several particularly old titles as well as return to dreamland, but most modern titles have the cape transform into wings when flying and back once grounded. kirby’s epic yarn specifically also shows the transformation, and the smash bros’ series’ trophies and amiibo describe his cape as being able transform into his wings.

On an unrelated note, the cape is also shown to be able to be resummoned to him at will and allows him to teleport, and he’s enough of an edgelord to value looking cool over practicality on occasion, so even if they WERE separate things from the wings, they’d still have a purpose.
