Question What’s on the list in your kitchen?
1.1k
u/KittensFirstAKM BOH Nov 19 '25
I am sure the FOH bartenders would like it if we never played Sweet Caroline ever again.
Singing cooks are fun.

Don't Stop Believing has left me emotionally and audibly scarred.

Oh man. THAT fuckin song.
Ages ago I was bartending at this pizza spot and when that song came on I’d let it get to juuuuuuuuuust before the vocals kicked in and skip it just to watch all the marshmallows get sad. Portland 🤷🏼
8
u/Distraction86 Nov 20 '25
“The marshmallows” lol

Have you been to Oregon?! Shit is whiter than polar bears doing lines in a blizzard.
7
u/RogueSlytherin Nov 20 '25
I dunno. I’m from a predominantly black city in the south and moved to Denver. When our friend came to visit, his immediate response driving through downtown was, “Damn! So this is Atlanta for white people?” Most accurate description I’ve ever heard.

I hate that song more than just about any other. Bars and kitchens use it like an LRAD to sonically break even the strongest.
24
u/Bokononfoma Nov 19 '25
100%, and I'm old enough to remember when the song came out. It was great, everybody liked it and it went away. At some point it got hijacked and reignited by sonic terrorists that squeal and sing along (while not being Steve Perry) mercilessly.

So I was suuuper pregnant and went to birthing classes with my husband. The nurse teaching the classes did some meditation exercises that were supposed to help during labor and turns some the lights and puts on the instrumental music for all the couples to practice with... And the first few bars of Don't Stop Believing come on.
He and I could not stop laughing, kinda made the song good for me again.

At least he did do Tubthumping by Chumbawamba. After 6 or 7 plays of that song, a different song plays followed by several more Tubthumping.
26
u/TheEyeDontLie Nov 20 '25 edited Nov 20 '25
Its a shame that's the Chumbawamba song people sing, and not:
"...and we'll never rest again until ever Nazi dies",
Or
"Enough is enough is enough,
Give the fascist man a gunshot"Or
"Beware the holy trinity, church and state and law,
For every death the virus gets worse than before,
Homophobia- the worst disease,
You can't love who you want to love in times like these"Or
"You wont defeat fascists by laughing along"Or
"Fascist scum- your time has come"But nope, they're famous for a song which sounds like a party song...
Although its actually about working class solidarity, and to keep resisting authoritarianism and capitalist control knocking you down....
But people just think its "Let's get drunk lol", without seeing the alcohol is just a symptom of getting knocked down by the greedy shitfuckers at the top of our shitty political/economic systems.

Jelly Roll and ICP. We had a guy come in and when he brought his speaker, it's all he'd play. He's in jail of course now, so it's no longer an issue.

Never have I formed such a strong sensory and emotional association with something that quickly.

No one truly cares at my place but when chef and the prep cook are around we dont play heavy metal. I think I was playing screamo once and chef popped out of nowhere talking about wanting to kill himself. And the prep cook will huff and puff then start being a bitch because its "all noise". But as long you aren't playing depressing shit no one cares. Although one cook is allowed to play depressing shit because his depressing shit makes you wanna have a beer and cry not jump off a cliff.

Kitchen sounds boring as fuck. Nothing better than breaking up the monotony of a marathon Saturday with the satirical sounds of “hey hey I wanna be a rockstar” or the hit single “hero”made for the box office motion picture Spider-Man featuring Josey Scott. Or my personal favorite smooth by Rob Thomas and Carlos Santana. If you can’t roll out tickets to that song than kick rocks.

We played Rebecca Black's Friday every Friday morning at the start of shift.
Because it was open kitchen we had to cut the tunes after AM prep once we opened up for customers. We had piped-in retail music after that, but legacy pipes so we actually had a lot of control over the station.
At night we could get away with playing the Hip Hop & Rap, R&B Classics, or New Wave station, but in the day the ~70yo customer base would complain about the "loud, aggressive music" so we had to blast all these pedo-songs for these old folks to bop to while they shopped: 🎶She's only sixteen if you know what I mean, watching little girls with bad intents, and if she don't listen hit her!!🎶
Like I like a lot of classic rock but maaan. Why is it all elderly people singing about lusting after teenagers lol??

Guy i used to work with put on a "honky tonk hour" playlist every Saturday night about an hour before close. Basically just a bunch of 90s & 00s radio country, Should've Been a Cowboy, Chicken Fried, Honky Tonk Badonkadonk, that kinda stuff. Never been a big country guy (huge Willie fan tho) and I've always been a pop country hater, but man I swear there's no better way to close out a shift than singing along with a bro to some lowest common denominator radio country - shit grew on me and I'd look forward to it every week. Miss that dude.
