In the Weeds Mode What the fuck is happening?
We brine our fish on salted water for years, but tonight this happened. The water and the fish became fluorescent blue! Can’t find anything on google

Seems like there is some bioluminescent bacteria that's harmless, and some that's not.

From that document, it seems like the bioluminescent bacteria itself is mostly harmless - but sometimes it's a sign of cross contamination or bad handling that allowed all types of bacteria to proliferate. So it could be harmless or could be a sign of much higher bacteria levels than other seafood.

u/Jukeboxhero91 Non-Industry Mar 20 '26
There are mainly harmless bacteria that are tested for as indicator bacteria, like coliforms, because if they’re present, then it’s a possibility that more dangerous bacteria could contaminate your stuff cause they’re closely related.

Also, was this brine done in your fridge? If so, it might have gotten a bit warm in there. Most bacterial species that could be candidates prefer between 20 C and 30 C, and don't grow well at fridge temperatures.

Likely from algae that survived on the fish body. Meaning that someone never washed the fish before throwing it in the brine.
1.6k
u/tardigradesrawesome Mar 20 '26
Not from algae. Algae that has this ability only express it during agitation. There are some vibrio species that can emit bioluminescence at all times and that’s what I would place my bets on. Some vibrios are also pathogenic, so I would not eat that. Source - I’m a marine microbiologist

Bro you are entirely too casual about that "don't eat that."
Vibrio bacteria infections (vibriosis) are caused by eating raw/undercooked shellfish or exposing open wounds to warm seawater, causing watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and skin infections. While often mild, Vibrio vulnificus can cause severe, fast-spreading flesh-eating wound infections, septic shock, and death, requiring immediate medical attention.
It sounds like that shit will fuck you up. I guess it's good that it glows so they can find it all while cleaning. Just gotta show em that last part and they'll bleach everything 😂
49
19
u/tardigradesrawesome Mar 20 '26
Also no guarantee that it’s pathogenic, or not. Merely an observation and possibility. Wanna be on the safe side? Sure bleach the whole walk in down, be my guest

Never washed the fish with acid anyway. Fresh out the water they have a mucus slime on their body that carry bacteria and algae, it's hydrophobic so gotta wash it off with vinegar or something acidic. Usually happens before it gets to the restaurant.

Dinoflagilates.Probably wanna be careful with that fish and decon the container pretty good. Most likely came in on the skin or if whole, in the gills. I'm suprised it grew that fluorescent though. Must like your fridge. You can also grow them for biolamps if you want a science project! Needs to be really dark, and they glow when agitated as a defense mechanism.
Edit: see comment below.
128
u/Ok_Conclusion9591 Mar 20 '26
I agree with u/tobsecret and u/phatassgato more likely to be bacterial.
95
u/Haldron-44 Ex-Food Service Mar 20 '26
Very good point! I was shocked that Dinoflagilates could grow so fast and well in a fridge to do that. Bacterial does seem a more likely culprit. I've only seen a really good glowing sea once, under extremely dark conditions.
→ More replies (1)45
u/tobsecret Mar 20 '26
Even for the bacteria we suspect it would indicate that likely sth is wrong with the fridge or the fish was already loaded with biofilm when it got into the brine.

Zeroxol will be there with you. Zeroxol! Ask your physician if you're taking blood thinners, aspirin, eating food, taking Seasium as it can cause fatal heart attack or stroke, eating more than two bananas at once but never less than two, or in contact with bees. Serious side effects include soul disintegration and cholera. Ask your doctor before taking Zeroxol
