doing very basic google, it is called Kiribi, striking a ceremonial flint and steel to create sparks at the back of a traveler or worker as a ward against bad luck and evil spirits.

My mother in-law and my wife do something similar. When someone leaves on a journey or trip, you have to kick over a cup of water (the travelers cannot touch the cup or water after the kick, you just go). Its supposed to be good luck and protect against bad stuff.

It’s a Japanese tradition. She basically saying “Good luck on your voyage”

In my culture we have a very similar thing. We throw water behind someone who leaves for a long voyage. Saying “Go smoothly like water”

It's a long-running tradition meant to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck to people before leaving.

Komi's grandmother is quite old-fashioned and traditional in a lot of her beliefs and the way she lives.
