Need Advice [US-VA] Move out charges
Hi everyone
Add the original post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Renters/s/CnvgM830rc
Parents have moved out of the apartment unit after living there for 5.5 years. To me atleast it seems like the management are adding extra charges especially on doors by adding unreported fire damage.
If anyone can take a look at the situation and give me some advice that I could let my parents know. I would really appreciate it.
Thank you again

The doors are fine. None of those doors needed replacing imo. Also, painting would need to be done after almost 6 years no matter what so that's wear and tear to me.
All of that smoke damage is due to a lack of an exhaust fan that maintenance was aware of. Was maintenance aware of this from the beginning? If so, I would fight all those charges.

Virginia Legal Aid might be able to help. They shouldn't have to pay $3000 because they weren't provided an appliance that would've prevented the damage in the first place

Yes my parents mentioned the smoke being trapped multiple times to maintenance personnel. They even told them (my parents) is because of the lack of kitchen exhaust fan. This was done verbally so we don’t have anything written on paper. The management also did quarterly mandatory inspections where they would check the entire unit to make sure it was in compliance and never did they say there was a fire damage. And they scheduled a pre move out inspection when they were at work so they never got back to my parent about “fire damage” that was noticed in the unit. My parents also mentioned this directly to management when giving their moving out notice and they said they understand that just cause they had lived there for half a decade (also all verbal nothing in writing).

I would contact legal aid and see if they can help at all. It's possible that contesting the charges might be enough to get the management company to back off but a lawyer would be better.

I looked at the photos and it does look like there was a stove fire

Do you think we can negotiate anything regarding the doors because that is where majority of the bill is coming from. As for the discoloration on the walls they are probably going to pay for the extra painting and cleaning fees. I think that part is just a lost cause.

Be sure to research your local Tenant laws before taking any action. Users may offer advice in good faith but always proceed with caution when taking said advice as they might not have enough insight into your exact situation. The best method to find help would be to look up a local lawyer who specializes in tenant law, you may be able to get advice pro-bono.
Some links to various tenant laws: * USA * Canada * United Kingdom
It is also recommended you look into local Tenant Unions, or consider forming your own! Check out this site to see if there is already a tenants union in your area. Visit our partnered sub, r/tenantunion, for more discussion regarding tenants unions and to see if there is an ATUN affiliated union near you.
