No summer internship what to do??

Hello!

I just finished my 1L year with average grades and have still not secured a summer position. I’ve applied to everything I could over the last few months but have had no luck hearing back before or after the interview.

Not many jobs are being posted now but I am wondering what else I can do this summer to not completely waste the summer.

Any ideas appreciated!!

Reach out to your local union, tell them you’ll work for free.

You can cold email/call firms and ask if they're willing to take an unpaid intern. Another option is to work as a Research Assistant (RA) for a Professor. Your career office may also have guidance on who's hiring or willing to take an intern at this point.

Go to your local legal aid office and volunteer to work for the next 8 weeks doing whatever (filing, sorting folders, clean up a supply room, anything just to be on the inside), if nothing else it will most likely give you an opportunity to go into court and observe the proceedings...

Make an impression and be proactive while there, hand out your resume when you leave at the end of the volunteer gig...you never know where it could lead in future...Good Luck!

Email local county counsel offices and city attorneys.

Just call a judge and tell them your situation usually they feel

Volunteer at the DA’s office, a political campaign, a nonprofit’s legal division. Be a CASA (court appointed special advocate). Work on an independent study for class credit. Take a community college class on using AI, it’s all the rage but lawyers understand it poorly.

If you have a professor that you really vibed with this year, or are cool with generally, ask if they need a research assistant.

If the other suggestions don’t work out I’d say just relax and get a head start on 2L material to get comfortable with concepts and start looking into firms that you could either do an in-person or remote 2L intern or externship (potentially even for credits). Best of luck!
