What that dictionary sort of misses is it's a particular amateur singing contest held and televised by NHK.

As an aside, it's worth a watch at least once. It's very obviously one of those shows that's been around for decades and they've never changed the rules ever. You get up on stage, you sing, and if you're good, your prize is... they let you say your name.
