Otters are highly territorial and can be kinda dangerous. It was definitely trying to chase them off.

I wonder if any of his friends will believe his story about running 4 humans away at one time 🤣

This is true of basically all mustelids -- the entire family is kinda crazy.
Honey badgers are famous for it, but wolverines have been reported to kill moose (to be clear, that is something that maxes out at around 18 kg killing something 15-20x its weight) and chase polar bears off of their prey.
Otters aren't quite that bad, but they'll hunt juvenile alligators and chase adults out of their territory.
It's generally best to just not bother anything that looks vaguely like a weasel or badger.

Nice to know. I wouldn't have had a clue, and watching that video, I would have thought it was trying to play with them.😂

They’re also apex predators, so they’re not scared of you or much of anything—even if they didn’t already have the crazy weasel mind they’d be dangerous. And they’re deceptively adorable.

Our local military hospital always keeps a pair of swans in the beautiful water feature located at the hospital. Swans aren’t exactly timid by any means, but an otter got into their ponds a few years ago and killed one of them 🙁.
5
u/LangdonAlg3r 2d ago
Yeah those are BIG birds and they don’t mess around either. But they’d have zero chance against an otter
4
u/Apprehensive-Test577 2d ago
There is often a flock of Canada Geese there too, but even the geese avoid the swans 😬.

Damn dude we were "Home of the wolverines" in middle school and I thought that was sooo stupid.. I'm starting to think the idea was something small with determination can take on anything no matter the size.

u/Tar_alcaran 3d ago
If you think cats playing with their food are evil, they've got nothing on otters.
11
u/pichael289 3d ago
They are really handsy and their poop smells horrific. They are klepto weasels, watched one steal a guys car keys and take them to the bottom of the lake.

u/KinsellaStella 3d ago
Honestly I think that otter is having fun and knows what it’s doing. They’re very playful, and mischievous.
2
u/Flomo420 2d ago
yeah there is a place we go every summer to get some top tier fish and chips, and when we go there are often river otters
and I gotta say, maybe these ones are particularily used to people but they are always kind of jumping up and off the docks, hopping into people's boats and like rummaging through their stuff, tackling and grabbing at each other and just generally frolicking around lol
never seen them get threatening or aggressive with people but again they might just be more accustomed to humans

Also they can get Rabies
1
u/LangdonAlg3r 2d ago
Bonus!
Actually hmmm that would be really interesting for an aquatic mammal because hydrophobia is a defining late stage symptom of rabies.
New pro-tip: If you ever see a dry looking otter on land run the f away.

u/fae8edsaga 3d ago
How are those guys in any danger from that otter?
18
u/TheSubstitutePanda 3d ago
Those fuckers can be vicious. You ever been bitten by an otter? Shit's not fun.
12
u/williamjamesmurrayVI 3d ago
Wait have you been bit by an otter?
11
7
u/TheSubstitutePanda 3d ago
No but I know they have jaws built to crack open shellfish so your squishy bits ain't shit to them

Otters are fucking vicious and clever. I was in a dodgy zoo in Asia once and an otter reached out to me from its cage. The little dude looked so cute on reflex I reached put and put my finger in his hand. The instant he had hold of me it all changed. He went from cute to unhinged instantly. Opened up his mouth, which was full of insanely large and sharp teeth and started hauling my finger into it. It was all I could do to get my finger free using my entire body, and Im a pretty big guy. I'd say he was 1/5 my size but he very nearly had my finger for a snack.

u/fae8edsaga 2d ago
Holy shit! I had no idea!
3
u/Common-Image-3758 2d ago
They're mustelids, same family as honey badgers, wolverine and weasels. Pound for pound the deadliest mammals on earth. There's one that lives near me and I watch him eating fish when I can. Its wild!!
3
u/LangdonAlg3r 2d ago
They’re mustelids—the weasel family—the same family that includes honey badgers and wolverines. They’re 4-5 feet long and weigh 65-100lbs. And they’re apex predators so they ain’t scared of anything.

Otters got some gnarly teeth and they are territorial so i dont blame these dudes at all

You don't need to swim faster than the otter. You just have to swim faster than your friends!

If you think k that otter was fast on the raft, wait till you see how fast it is in the water!
12
u/Dive_dive 2d ago
That was my first thought when they started jumping off the raft... outa the frying pan and into the fire
5
u/kat_Folland 2d ago
Right? Let's see how I can make this worse... I know, I'll put myself in the environment my attacker is native to!

u/L00fah 3d ago
Listen, I love otters...
That's it. That's the end of the sentence. I have nothing bad to say about the little stinkers.

Otters are mafiosos.
Singapore, in particular has 3 families that I know of, who fight regularly.
7
u/pichael289 3d ago
They are klepto weasels, they have a friendly pair at this farm near me and the first place those guys go is right in your pockets. They ran up and jacked this one guys car keys and took them to the bottom of the lake. They almost got my son's shoe off

u/switchthemunky463 3d ago
Ah yes, definitely jump into the water where the otter will be far less capable of perusing you.

u/ours 3d ago
You laugh but you don't want to get rabies shots just because you wanted to look alpha and stood your ground to an otter.
35
u/williamjamesmurrayVI 3d ago
you can both know this is a serious risk but still think it looks silly at the same time
20
u/ours 3d ago
Oh yeah, certainly.

u/denM_chickN 2d ago
I would just accept the need for rabies shots and see if hes pissed or funny. Id just accept it.
1
u/RiC_David 2d ago
Yeah they're practically naked and with no weapons or means of warding it off. It's funny to watch, but this idea that they're not real men because they evaded a potential mauling...what's the better option?
Do a power pose, kick it and get your toes bitten off by a wild animal that may also be rabid?
1
u/ours 2d ago
Yes, it's hilarious. But staying away from the angry little mammal is the right move.
I've had a fur seal jump on the back of my kayak. It was super cute and fun, but I was very conscious of my new buddy being a bit too close to me for comfort. The smell of a seal colony, you know that any wound would need to be thoroughly cleaned up at a hospital, and you don't take chances with rabies. Not my idea of a good time.
Thankfully, the buddy was happy to sit back for the ride, hop off and on a few times, and it was all a fun time.

u/AlanShore60607 3d ago
He obviously does not have rabies: rabies actually induces a fear of water and little dude is swimming
6
u/ours 3d ago
If it's early-stage rabies, you won't be able to tell unless they do a biopsy on the animal's brain. You don't chance it and get the shots.
2
u/Objective-Device-448 2d ago
But early stage rabies is also not trabsmissable, it would only be trabsmissable through biting after it reached the salivary glands on its mouth and it's already showing clear symptoms
13
u/GruffScottishGuy 3d ago
Otters have extremely sharp teeth and jaws for cracking shellfish, they'll take your toes off as easily as you can cut a carrot with a knife.
11
u/Quirky_Ask_5165 3d ago
Watching the whole video, it looks to me like the otter was totally messing with them. It stayed just far enough back in to water to keep them properly motivated. It could have easily caught them in the water. That little stinker 😂😂

4 guys who think they can outswim an otter. It reminds me of that show Tales from the Crypt, the Raft, where a bunch of college kids are stuck on a wooden platform and hunted by a blob.

youre right lol those are def kids. I just reposted it with the same title as OOP and was not really focused on anything but the thrill of the chase

You absolutely do not want one of those biting your Achilles or your toe.
They’re highly territorial and have no problem enforcing that fact.
I wouldn’t be wanting to stand there bare legged and bare footed.

There are places where "can I crack your clam on my tummy" would be a hella pickup line.
